News Lumix S9 - new camera rumor roundup

Absolutely. I really don't get it. Personally, I'd have liked to have seen it with an EVF, but just because it doesn't I'm not going to throw all my toys out of the pram. And tell the whole world what a miserable, misguided company Panasonic is while I'm at it.
Yeah, there is so much misery and tantrum throwing going on that it sucks the joy out of the forums and groups. I wonder if they get enjoyment out of being angry!

I'm not in the target market for the camera, but I still love reading about it, watching all the different reviews, and basically just educating/informing myself. It's a hobby, supposed to be enjoyable and good fun. A lot of what I'm reading and watching online is certainly not reflecting people's experience of that, not by a long shot.
Same for me. I love reading articles and reviews and watching tubes about new camera gear about any brand. But I prefer the facts about what the gear can and can't do rather than the silly pontificating like "I don't know who this camera is for". People can work that out themselves.

But then, those kind of issues are one reason I've always preferred written reviews to video ones, and especially to podcasts. Writing (for me, at least) is a slower, more deliberative process, and from the results it seems like it inspires a lot more reviewers to be thoughtful and less off-the-cuff.
Gordon Laing (camera labs) completely writes his gear reviews then makes videos of the exact script he has written verbatim which is why it is so professional. Gordon then shows all his test images always including Brighton pier and surroundings where he lives, it gives an idea of the boring basics like sharpness etc.

No grumbling, no wise cracks, no attempted comedy, no trying to be a personality or trying to be Top Gear...

So silly, and the 15 minute limit is for a clip. After that you can start another clip. My clips are typically a minute or less. I had a hand held 10 minute clip one time and that seemed like forever.
Exactly, very few people need limitless video, I did 2 minutes at the bird feeder and it was long enough. Those who say they do need it for concerts or whatever are going to have an S5ii rigged with mics and SSD etc anyway, basically pro work and the S9 is in no way meant for that.

Also heard Jordan and others moaning about the lack of a headphone socket... Again same thing as above, that's pro video stuff and again S5ii is for that. I obviously mean the X variant too but most get that by now using ProRes etc.

Then someone else moaning about lack of a hotshoe and not being able to fit the Panasonix XLR audio interface... This is just silly by this stage Z04 Kaputtlachen

But not if you are a hobbyist who already has two cams (S5iiX/S5) but might want a third cam if they do interviews/weddings/events sometimes.
I would love to have a third cam, but it would have also to be able to work as C-cam...

Note I only use the S5 during interviews/weddings/events, for the rest only the S5iiX, and I don't want a third cam to be used so sparingly... It would especially be for Trips , but also for interviews/weddings/events...

Right now IF i would by a new cam, it would be the S5ii, although I see the fun (or is it GAS) of the S9.

That is GAS, if you turned up for pro work with a S9.peoole wouldn't take you seriously as it looks like a toy camera, OK not quite the lego Pentax K-01 but certainly not pro anyway.

The S5ii can be had for so cheap in combos if you need specific lenses (when you deduct the individual lens price).

But I'm no Pro.. I do Prosumer stuff yes, but I'm no Pro. I work in the IT

I wish it wasn't a hard limit. To be honest, I always felt those hard limits were sometimes in there for artificial reasons. Like, I guess, if you are shooting outdoors in 40 C summer heat, the camera might overheat. But thinking about the G9 or the S5, which both had limits imposed on them - I used them both for quite a long time indoors, one hour or more, basically recording until the limit and then starting another recording right after without any cooldown period, and I never ever saw any sort of warning or noticed any kind of unnatural heat buildup when touching the camera.
I think I'd much prefer a temperature warning instead of 15/30 minutes and you are done.

But I also believe your typical content creator, who's only going to take short clips of themselves doing a little dance or VLOG "Hey I am in this location!"-style clips, most likely won't hit the limits on the camera and so they won't really notice.

I am kinda wondering if it will be Webcam capable (currently in my home office my S5ii gets used for that purpose sometimes...) and if there are going to be any limits.

In the video of Hugh Brownstone, he mentioned that the average watching time for each video at TickTok is 3 seconds!

My guess is that Panasonic will fix this with a FW update for the USBC port. Than you can use a dongle.

My guess is that this will come also sooner or later with a FW update. As long as people keep asking for it, they have to change that.

No, not possible.

Here the video of Hugh. Worth watching:

I admit, my speculation is in broad strokes; not a detailed analysis. With that in mind…
  • The sensor of the GM5 is a lot smaller. You have more space for other things and less heat development
Yes, the S9 has a larger sensor. It also has a larger body. Looking at the GM5/S9 comparison pic you posted earlier, it seems like the S9’s sensor has about the same size in proportion to the body as the GM5. Maybe a bit more, but not by a lot.

Meanwhile, I’ve suggested using the same size EVF as the GM5 - which would make the installation smaller as a percentage of the body.
  • Non electronic IBIS for a fullframe sensors take a lot of space.
True. OTOH, the GM5 has a hybrid shutter, while the S9 doesn’t. I’d think the two balance each other out, at least to a degree.
  • The GM5 has a tiny battery.
  • The GM5 does not have an articulating screen
Both true; the battery in particular does take an extra chunk. OTOH, the battery is at the other end of the camera from the EVF.

That… seems pretty far outside the profile of a casual hobbyist? As in, if you’re talking three cameras, and using terms like C-cam, you’re way more dedicated than most?

I see the argument as more relevant to someone more casual - who only has one camera, and does need the camera to be more of a jack-of-all-trades. Like a parent wanting to record their kid’s concert. OTOH, I’d also expect someone like that to be a lot more forgiving of quick blips in the recording from restarting every 15 minutes or so; it’s the kind of thing I remember from using my phone to record my niece’s concerts a few years ago.

Funny coincidence, I'm reading comments about an Android phone I've ordered and the arguments are similar or exactly the same with anger about the lack of headphone jack and the "dealbreaker" term about this and that.

No SDcard slot = No buy
No wireless charging = No buy
No 2MP macro= No buy
No telephoto camera=No buy
No 8k video=No buy

This is how it works nowadays. People are not willing to accept compromises anymore. They want it always the way how they individually use the camera, not how others using it. They run around like trolls, joining every review to post their "egoistic" requirements and always saying: "If you do not do it my way, then I will not buy it". And "I do not care what others want to have, as long as you do it my way". Z04 Angeber

As if the producer would care about this very vocal minority. Z04 Auslachen

I think we can assume, that the producers spent a lot of money in surveys and research before they invest millions of USD in developing a new camera. Therefore there seems to be a market for each product that ends up at the dealers. No matter what we might think about that product.

How good this will sell depends on the price tag and the right marketing communication. Today you have to talk to people instead of talking at people. Unfortunately, only few brands understand this.

Is it better that this camera exists on the market or not? Z04 Headbanger

Not. Because it's already doing damage to Panasonic's reputation. No headphone jack! 10 minute open gate limit! Not suitable for vloggers, sorry.

But let's see how things pan out. Perhaps the Lumix line will be redeemed and this blot will be forgotten. Or perhaps it will be another "toneh" moment!

And this is where we totally disagree. A vlogger will and shall not buy that camera.

The Lumix S9 is not meant for a "traditional vlogger". It is made for content creators in a general term. For people who do not have youtube as a business, but who use social media among friends nevertheless. Of course you can take also photos with it.

I think that Panasonic made it very clear by not offering a hot shoe, by not offering a mic input and headphone jack, that the traditional vlogger is not the target group. They did not forget to include it. This was by purpose ;)

If you want to have that with fullframe, buy an S5ii. Simple as that. Do not make something out of the S9 for what it was not designed for.

If you want to have all these features in that small size, you have to downgrade at least to APS-C or even better to MFT.

And please do not forget, that Casey Neistat, who even was invited to held a speach at the Oscar ceremony and has 12 million subscribers, became famous with a technological underwhelming Canon 70d. Just watch his old videos on youtube.

All these youtube reviewers who are bashing the S9, because they do not want to accept that the S9 was not made for them, are dreaming of such a success. It is not only the gear which makes you a successful vlogger/youtuber ;)

And to have some fun and to see, what really is a problem for vloggers/serious youtubers, watch the first 60 seconds (you need to scroll first to the very beginning) of Richards review of the Lumix G9ii below:

If you want a review about the fun, not the techs see this one:

This is actually his second video about the S9, the first was also cool but a bit more standard
