News Lumix S9 - new camera rumor roundup

I find the comparison of @Richard Wong against the Leica Q a strong point. Look at the size differences!

not pocketable vs pocketable

S9 is also not in a pocketable category. Yes S9 is small & light - for Full Frame, yet more trade offs then the GR3. I think for the asking price there should have been a shutter and an evf. And then, wow! Now… meh.

Reminds me when I had the Lumix GX80 and the Lumix G80. Pretty much same camera, where the GX80 had a shutter(I think) and an evf. Bought it as occasion with 12-32, and took it on a trip to Peru, with that small zoom, 15/1.7 and 45/1.8. After the trip, never used it again because the G80 was so much more comfortable to use, and although small and light, GX80 required a bag.

hey guys, i've been reading this (and other post) but couldn't really reply for obvious reasons.
but now I can so if you have questions I can try to reply.
Having said that, I haven't been sleeping much over the last week so now I may go for some deep sleep first

In this review they are talking (somewhere in the end) that they talked with Lumix personnel about removing the time limit for video. If that would happen, and the price drops to 1000,-, than i'm interested:

I've spoke to the engineer and other Lumix HQ staff about the time limit as well during the Lumix summit. I've said pretty much the same thing I said in my review. It's better to remove (or allow user to disable) the time limit, or make it longer, even if the camera would overheat under hotter conditions.
They wrote down my feedback. But they didn't promise anything (as I expected)

Excellent review, Richard!

Could you try the 18-40mm Lens? I find the focal length very interesting for photo and video. Is it coming in october/november?

Thanks! No the lens was locked inside a display case. So no touchy touchy allowed.
I heard it's coming later this year. I think I did hear Oct/Nov mentioned during the summit. But honestly I can't remember for sure if it was for this lens or something else as so much info were shared with us during the event.

Was there a visible aperature indication you can share ?

Disappointing
I’ll stick to my 15 ProMax which conveniently is also a phone, wallet etc for quick snaps when out and about without an actual camera
I had a TL2 a good few years ago which was absolutely a thing of beauty but I couldn’t easily cope without an EVF and it moved on

At the moment I am more positive on the S9 (except for the price) than at the beginning.

I think the S9 with the Sigma 24/3.5 DG DN could be a great travel combination. Also the Sigma 45/2.8.

There is a rumor about a Sigma 28-45/1.8 DG DN zoom. I do not know how big that one is. Could be interesting too.

But I will first wait and see what else is coming within the next few months. For L-Mount and MFT.

Yes, pocketable is absolutely nice. But a size reduction doesn’t have to go all the way down to pocketable to be very, very helpful.

A mechanical shutter would be nice, but not critical. An EVF is critical, which is why I’m probably passing on the S9. But if it did have an EVF like the GM5, I’d be very, very interested.

See, I’m almost the exact opposite.

I’ve got both the Sigma fp and the S5. I use the fp for about 80% of my shooting - because while the S5 does have a larger grip, IBIS, and handles much better with larger lenses, that’s not nearly enough to make up for the fact that my fp kit bag is about half the size/weight of my S5 kit. That makes a huge difference when I’m out for longer than about 30 minutes.

Not to mention it’s much more discreet - the S5 shouts ‘big serious camera’ in a way the fp doesn’t. I’ve had no problems taking the fp inside museums, exhibits, and other locations where a big rig draws unwanted attention.

About the only time I pull the S5 out is when I need the extra capability; typically when I want to shoot with a large, heavy lens, or am doing a lot of shooting in low light where IBIS would be helpful. That’s a small percent of the time. Most of the time, I’m much happier going light.

So how does the rear screen work in bright light? As I said earlier in the thread, I’ve seen many, many claims that the screen on a screen-only camera was good enough to be used in bright light, and they’ve failed to live up to the claim every time.

Sleep! We want you coherent! ^^;;

it is "OK", about the same brightness as the S5II screen. I've been using the camera last week or so in Japan sometimes it's REALL bright and hot. and it was ok .. for me.

But if you think other cameras are not good enough, you will feel the same with the S9 as there is nothing really special compared to the S5II

So why did I pre-order the S9?

I have been looking for a small carry-around camera for some time. That's the reason I got a Sony a6700. But I've not been really happy with it, so I'm getting a divorce. The S9 will be my new carry-around camera. I also pre-ordered the 26mm f/8 pancake lens.

I'm expecting the S9 photos to have the same quality as S5II/S5IIx, which I really like, and the video should be plenty good as a B-cam for my S5IIx. Also it gets my little family of cameras closer to all Panasonic and L-mount.

I didn't see anyone else chime in that they've ordered. Hopefully I won't be all alone; but for sure when the day arrives I'll post pictures and comments.

Hey Charles. I am pretty tempted by the new S9 and can see myself ordering one. It would essentially replace my GX85 which is my current small and casual carry-around camera when I go walking with a single lens or maybe a second lens in my pocket. I've already got two of the Sigma Contemporary lenses that would go well with it. The new pancake and zoom would be nice.

I have to laugh at some of the comments in forums over at DPR... e.g. "no EVF, no mech shutter, no deal!!!". It's like Toyota Hilux drivers complaining about a new Toyota hatchback model that has some unique features and declaring "it doesn't have a pickup tray and I can't fit three adults in the back seat, what were they thinking!!??!!".

It's a different model for different purposes. And the fully featured version (in this case the S5II/x) is already available at a darn good price.

Did you read the outrage and vitriol directed at the fixed aperture pancake? It's as if Panasonic has personally killed their firstborn ha ha ha ha.
Anyway, I was wrong, and would have lost my house about it. Pretty bold move I think, being manual focus. I don't hate it, just very very surprised. Possibly due to owning the diminutive little m4/3 14mm f2.5

Well, the more reviews I see, the more tempted in get...
I am looking for excuses to justify this purchase at home. The biggest one is that I "need" a small camera to do videos of my 1 year old daughter with the best image quality.
For pro videos and client work I have the S5IIx very well rigged.

But, I would have to sell at least 1500€ of my gear arsenal. Something has to go. Maybe my micro four thirds gear. Otherwise my wife would not be very impressed hahaha :D

Maybe I wait to see what camera comes from Lumix this year... Daumenhoch

The most honest review (as he wasn't at the conference) and especially about the LUTs, I noticed LR has a similar thing now where you can use some random persons filter. Now in S9 you can combine LUTs which is just going to be an unnecessary over complicated mess.

Whilst the camera has less buttons the menu is as over complicated as ever, the LUT button just brings you to that spaghetti zone.

A positive aspect is the hybrid zoom. I want this on S5ii.

Yeah I know it's CC but he has an alternative view as always to the run of mill YouTubers often blowing sunshine where it doesn't.

Watch the above, propaganda/advertising is very powerful hence why Lumix fly YouTubers to Japan and wine/dine them as they are cheap advertising.

Respect to CC for not going to Japan and being a minion :p

Xavier, you really don't need an S9, if they did a proper job of an AF faster pancake then it would have been far more justifiable but a MF f8 lens was completely stupid.

I think, there will be a m43 camera in the form factor of the S9. Maybe even in the same body? like the S5ii & G9ii? m43 in this form factor makes much more sense to me. And even though i just revived the my m43 system with a used GX80 i can see the benefits of the smaller entire system, and wont let go of my m43 gear and the adapter to ef where i then get almost the same image quality than with fullframe.

I watched it. I like his humour.

It’ll be interesting to see if this thing sells in any numbers. I suspect it’ll be a flop. All the early reviews are written/shot by the posse of “influencers” that Panasonic shipped out to Japan - and despite them being wined and dined and heavily sold to for several days, the reviews are all along the lines of “small, some nice features, but limited in capabilities”. Compare that to the S5ii reviews made after the same exercise and the buzz and positivity was on a different level. I’m guessing this will be selling at 75% of its launch price by Christmas with only die hard L mount users desperate for a compact body even giving it a second look.

Now where is the S1 replacement?
