not pocketable vs pocketable
Yes, pocketable is absolutely nice. But a size reduction doesn’t have to go all the way down to pocketable to be very, very helpful.
S9 is also not in a pocketable category. Yes S9 is small & light - for Full Frame, yet more trade offs then the GR3. I think for the asking price there should have been a shutter and an evf. And then, wow! Now… meh.
A mechanical shutter would be nice, but not critical. An EVF is critical, which is why I’m probably passing on the S9. But if it did have an EVF like the GM5, I’d be very, very interested.
Reminds me when I had the Lumix GX80 and the Lumix G80. Pretty much same camera, where the GX80 had a shutter(I think) and an evf. Bought it as occasion with 12-32, and took it on a trip to Peru, with that small zoom, 15/1.7 and 45/1.8. After the trip, never used it again because the G80 was so much more comfortable to use, and although small and light, GX80 required a bag.
See, I’m almost the exact
opposite.
I’ve got both the Sigma fp and the S5. I use the fp for about 80% of my shooting - because while the S5 does have a larger grip, IBIS, and handles much better with larger lenses, that’s not nearly enough to make up for the fact that my fp kit bag is about
half the size/weight of my S5 kit. That makes a huge difference when I’m out for longer than about 30 minutes.
Not to mention it’s much more discreet - the S5 shouts ‘big serious camera’ in a way the fp doesn’t. I’ve had no problems taking the fp inside museums, exhibits, and other locations where a big rig draws unwanted attention.
About the only time I pull the S5 out is when I need the extra capability; typically when I want to shoot with a large, heavy lens, or am doing a lot of shooting in low light where IBIS would be helpful. That’s a small percent of the time. Most of the time, I’m much happier going light.
