News Lumix S9 - new camera rumor roundup

That is with the new app, I do understand also the S5ii(X) will support this in the future

It seems to be even more. In the official streaming at around minute 12 they talk about it. 2 other things aprta from the app.

The S9 has 5GHz Wifi installed. You do not need to be at home to have fast transfer speed, Does the S5ii has this too?

The other is a special open gate "mp4 lite" format, which has smaller file sizes than usual and the transfer of these files is faster thanks to this. I guess this is a firmware thing and could be made also available to the S5ii later on.

They can't exclude the S5ii, the app isn't available yet and that LUT madness is a dog's dinner of complication the S9 or any camera simply does not need.

The S5ii(X) has this too, the S5iiX can even stream Fullhd/h264 over it

S5ii has 5GHz wifi but that needs connected straight to your phone with the current Lumix app I think, I also only get 5-6MB/s transfer speed!

This has 15MB/s bitrate and poor quality output so what is the point of it? I wouldn't want it on my S5ii

They say in the presentation that you do not loose image quality with this.

No mechanical shutter, so photography will be painful in artificial light.

No EVF so also useless in bright light.

Not weather sealed.... so where are we supposed to use this? Only outdoors in summer in Japan?

There's no back dial and poor button placement altogether. And all this for €1700. Good grief.

I love the form factor and weight. In fact I've been waiting for a camera this size that has IBIS. (So, no Sigma fp). Indeed, there's plenty of room in this form factor for Panasonic to get it right. They just chose not to.

More power to them if they get all those vloggers on board. But I am thinking most of them are already happy with their iPhones or Sony cameras. And just wait until they try taking photos in their shopping malls...

This camera is not for us, the traditional photographer. Of course we can use it nevertheless, but the whole design thinking is optimized for the target group of younger people who want to do the same things they do with their smartphones now with a Lumix S9 with a better image quality. All features are taylored for that target group. Keep it simple like a smartphone. The lack of dials and knobs, the lack of in depth-customization etc. The S9 is a very smart P&S with fullframe sensor and optimized to get good looking results fast and easy on social media.

And all this for €1700. Good grief.

I agree the price point is way too high. Even for this target group. But wait a few months and it will be a lot cheaper IMHO

Be patient. In my view this is just a first step. They even do not have the lenses needed for such a small fullframe camera so that it would make sense for "us" old grandpas. I am sure they will bring a S9 with EVF too. Sooner or later. But for the target group of EVF shooters, the next complain will be the lack of small lenses ;)

Give Panasonic time. They will release this year more cameras. It is just one company. Nikon does not introduce 10 different bodies within a year neither. There is Sigma too. Maybe they will bring out successors of the fp and fpL too?

That is a business decision of Panasonic. Obviously they do not agree on this. They do think that there is a huge market for content creators and social media lovers out there. With deep pockets. And if I look at what happened with the Fuji X100V and X100VI on social media and the overwhelming demand for these (overpriced) cameras, it seems Panasonic is right with this assumption.

And I have to say, if the Lumix S9 would cost 999€ only, I would be intrigued to buy it. I use already a Ricoh GR3 without an EVF. Although I miss an EVF on the Ricoh sometimes, I still use it often and with a lot of pleasure. The Ricoh GR3 has us, the traditional photographer, as its target group. You can customize everything really deep, if you want to. But you can use it also as a P&S. I hope that Panasonic will offer one day a similar camera in fullframe or something like a GX9 for L-Mount.

Yeah; give me that lens for the S9! In Panasonic flavor and pricing.

An F2.8 version would be already enough. F1.8 makes everything only bigger and more expensive.

That is also my point: the camera is way less than the S5ii, but nearly with the same price! 1000€ would be a real and good price for the S9 and many people (me included) would then give it a try. Just for fun and knowing that not everything will be perfect. But for the actual price:No Way!

In this review they are talking (somewhere in the end) that they talked with Lumix personnel about removing the time limit for video. If that would happen, and the price drops to 1000,-, than i'm interested:

At introduction, all brands try to make money with the early adopters. Over the time the street price will adjust, depending on the demand.

@Richard Wong could you please make a shot similar to the one in your video with the S5ii and S9 side by side, but this time from a lower angle so we can easier see the height difference between the two bodies?
