News Lumix S9 - new camera rumor roundup

In red it looks like my old Lumix GM5 with the 12-32 kit zoom Z04 Herz

It absolutely does. And I suspect in blue, it’d look very much like my old GM1.

That’s one of the most frustrating bits on the S9 - it feels like a replay of the GM1, which had so much promise and then flopped in the market. With the GM5 coming a year later to fix some of the more notorious flaws, but it wasn’t enough to make the GM series a success. I have to wonder - if they’d released the GM5 first or alongside the GM1, so that the GM1 hadn’t made such a mixed first impression, would the line have been more successful?

Well it looks like the S9 is exactly what we expected it to be, though why someone would pay €1699 for a camera without a viewfinder or mechanical shutter is completely beyond me.

It does look nice in crimson though... :)

And neither of the lenses announced sound interesting either.

A duff announcement from Panasonic if you ask me. Nothing exciting at all :(

I think it will sell like crazy..... But @ at the TikTok/Instagram generation..

Not for me though: 4K/10bit/25p only for 15 minutes at a time, and than still in 4:2:0 (NOT 4:2:2!!!)

I have mixed feelings so far. I still try to collect more data. Except for IBIS, what is the advantage of the Lumix S9 over the Sigma fp if you use it for photography only?

Would it be worth it over my Ricoh GR3/GR3x?

I wonder if Panasonic has an agreement with Leica that they would never make a compact "Rangefinder" style camera with an EVF or Optical range-finder. It's so stupid. I would never buy a camera like this without an EVF or an optical viewfinder. ( I might have to go with Fuji for a compact travel camera. Even a grown-up Full Frame version of the GX85 would have been great! )

Oh dear that has just been taken off my beloved's Christmas list.

It looks lovely but a bit of deja vu for me at least, appearance wise it is so like the rather good little FujiFilm X-M1/2/3 series I had years ago (and especially the blue body version). I know they were not full frame or blessed with IBIS but that lovely Bayer sensor made them special and so portable for travel.

No EVF and a tad on the expensive side so it is a no from me but it may be taken on by those who gladly pay well over the odds for an X100VI and still cannot get one. A new TikTok icon?

Interesting review by the Hybrid Shooter who likes it. I like his style of reviewing and unbiased opinion.

I haven't watched any videos yet but read this and will this come to S5ii?

Speaking as an fp owner…

IBIS would definitely be nice, but not essential; I generally do quite well by setting a shutter speed floor at 1/60. (The fp’s sensor does very well in low light, so I can get away with letting the ISO ramp up to 6400.)

Handling might be a benefit, but I can’t tell that without actually holding one.

Menu/UI commonality might be a benefit if you own other Panasonic cameras; I think the Sigma UI is fine when switching between the fp and my S5, but I generally set-and-forget so I don’t interact much with the menus.

The Live LUT feature looks like it could be really nice if you like to play around with that stuff in-camera. I don’t, and save the fancy stuff for post when I do it at all, so no big advantage there.

The fp has an optional EVF, which as I’ve said is a big deal for me. ^^;;

I like the camera, but I will wait to the second hand markt in a year or two.

What really interests me is the 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 pancake lens. I find the focal lenght very interesting. But it will not come until october/november, apparently. If Lumix does not announce the 28mm or the 40mm f/2 or f/2.8 small primes, I will consider this 18-40mm seriously.

Its standard zoom combined with zoom from fullframe to APS-C.

I understand it does come to the S5ii(X), just like the Lut options and the new connection app (Lumix labs).

A couple more things to add after finishing Richard’s review: the larger battery would be nice on the S9. I carry three batteries on the fp, and can sometimes go through two on a long afternoon’s shooting. Pre-burst shooting would definitely be good. And the handheld hi-res mode could be very nice if it works well; I’ve honestly never had much luck with those modes on the Pen-F or the E-M1 II. Finally, having WiFi connectivity would be nice; I do miss that sometimes on the fp.

I just finished the microfournerds review and what sticks out to me is that this isn't a small camera. It's not going in any pockets it seems except for maybe a big snow jacket pocket and even then it will be bulging. It's fairly light at least but this is what I ran into when I got an oly em5mkii for a edc camera - small isn't small enough unless you can carry it on you casually. I found I'd rather use my phone or a point n shoot when I'm casually carrying and then when I know I'll have the time to shoot - I want my s5ii out for maximum control.

I really can't wait for Lumix labs and the LUT community, because I think that has real mass appeal.

The 18-40 lens also intrigues me, but at 4.5 at the start - I'm probably going to lean towards a 20-60 instead to get a brighter option if im looking for light kit. I can see why you would want it though for vlogging with e-stabe on, but I don't see getting into that personally.

Overall, I think the s9 is pretty niche for those vlogges/creators. Anyone else, and I'm going to say picking up a used s5ii is hands-down the better buy if you're buying it as your only camera. If you want it as a travel option to your existing l mount gear - that seems totally viable.

Here is the official stream.

They talk about easier sharing the images. I have to find out how this shall be easier with an S9 vs. an S5ii...

That is with the new app, I do understand also the S5ii(X) will support this in the future
