News Lumix S9 - new camera rumor roundup

Rumors seem to have dried up over the past few days. Kinda wondering if it was really someone from Pana leaking and realising that after the beautiful camera they only have got bad news left so now they are keeping it under wraps until Wednesday

Ok, according to L-Mount rumors the prices of the S9 are:

USA 1.499 $
Europe 1.699 €

If I am not wrong, 1.500 $ are 1.380 € to currency exchange.

That means: in Europe the S9 would be 320€ more expensive... is that correct? Is that fair?

I could buy a used Sigma 45mm f/2.8 for 320€

In Europa the taxes are already included, not in the US... With taxes (in the Netherlands that would be 21%) it's about the same price.... But for that price I would buy a extra S5ii(X), probably secondhand. Especially because this camera only has 6k 10 min, 4K 15min. He states Low rolling shutter, I expect thats better than the S5ii(X), that would mean a different sensor?

But the news of a software update in September for my S5iiX is the most interesting part ;-)

On a second thought: I think that they can fix this in software when the E-stabilisation is enabled. They talked about that the new (last) software update from the S5ii(X) might already do this. I haven't tried it but some youtubers stated they might have seen 'some' improvement... It might be improved now?

Hopefully the software update from september might improve the AF even more... That's what I hope.

I have a hard time to believe these prices. I doubt that the S9 would sell well for that price (body only).

I would rather buy a Sigma fpL with a 60MP sensor or a Lumix S5ii for that price or just wait what else is coming over the next couple of months.

If these list prices are true, then either the S9 has something we do not know yet or we will see a massive price drop of the street price very fast.

Agreed

I can buy brand new a Lumix S5 for under 1.000€ and a S5ii for around 1.850€. Both are excellent cameras and very good for video.

I can buy a Sigma fp for under 1.800€ and a Sigma fpL for around 2.000€

A Lumix S1R costs new around 2.400€.

A Sony A7c costs around 1.500€, a A7cii around 2.000€

So why should I buy an S9 for 1.700€? What is the major selling point that motivates me to hit the buy button and ignore the alternatives?

These are not "entry level" prices at all!!

I would definitely go for the S9. The FPL 60Mpix sensor is much slower than the S5II 24Mpix sensor and the camera has no IBIS and nor articulating screen.

Well I would buy the S5II over the S9, if I would prefer a full sized camera. But when I'm searching for a compact camera. Than I would go for the S9.

Man, Europe-tax is getting really tough. I remember when we were getting 1:! prices in Europe and that wasn't even that long ago. Maybe like 10 years ago?

I am somewhat torn. I'd prefer to stay in the L mount ecosystem, I don't want to run two ecosystems. So I can get the S9 and see if I can live with all the compromises. But 1699 is kinda steep. Or I can get something that won't require me fully buying into a new system, like the Leica Q3 or Fuji X100VI. But then both of those cameras have their limitations. And if I am honest, between the Q3 or the Fuji... I want the Leica, but that comes with the Leica tax. Or I do end up getting something like the Nikon Zf but then I'll probably find myself buying lenses and at that point all is lost...

Man, all I want is a smallish camera I can take with me when I am travelling and I know I just want to take some good pictures for fun AND be able to use a flash in challenging outdoor situations. Panasonic really did one over me by not having a mechanical shutter. I would've been a very happy man with all the other compromises but that one stings...

I'd wait until the camera is actually released, before getting upset over spec's.

What kind of shots do you plan to shoot that need a mechanical shutter? I shoot with electronic shutter now and then and never see any difference. And video is all electronic shutter of course. The pre-burst and high shot rate with the S5II and S5IIx are with electronic shutter.

Sure, if I shoot trains going close by I'll want a mechanical shutter. And will the S9 have a flash mode? We'll see.

Well, as I said here, the fully-electronic shutter can cause visual artifacts when shooting output from digital projectors. From what I understand, it's an issue where the frequency of the scanning doesn't sync with the read speed from the sensor. I've also seen reports of problems under some kinds of fluorescent/mercury vapor lighting, though I haven't experienced that myself.

Agree but the world seems to have went crazy with a lot of people seemingly swimming in expendable income, they seem almost inflation proof, stock market all time highs again, people spending like crazy on take away food at mad prices, waiting lists on those stupid Fuji cameras...

Maybe it'll all stop? I can't ever remember seeing this before in my life!

Money literally growing on trees or ahem being printed...

I seen banding with indoor test shots using silent mode on my S5ii in my kitchen with LED bulbs. It's something you have to be aware of and it must be the same for video.

The S5II and S5IIx have a video mode called Synchro Scan to eliminate this issue. From a set shutter speed you adjust it slightly to eliminate banding. For photos shoot at a relatively slow shutter speed so the sensor has time to read. 1/60 or 1/50 or so.

I'll try and remember this... The long slow process of learning a complex hybrid camera!

I think those photos were 1/125 and just a test comparison with a legacy Pentax 135mm f3.5 lens vs Lumix 24-105 f4 (which the modern lens beat just like all the other legacy primes also).

It's very unlikely I'd be using 1/125 for any interior/LED lit scenario so it's never going to an issue. Burst modes with high shutter speeds are going to be outside, HR modes inside with higher shutter speeds indoors with LED lighting unlikely also but good to know to keep the shutter speed down if need be.

Thanks Daumenhoch
