So, after pulling out my Sigma DG DN 45/2.8 for the first time in a while, I decided to comparison-shoot it against my well-liked Konica Hexanon 40/1.8 to see how well the adapted lens did. Both shot at f/8 on my Sigma fp.

Sigma:

The Sigma had a shorter close-focusing distance than the Hexanon. But I had a lot of trouble with the autofocus on the fp, getting it to lock on to the particular flower I wanted; and even when it claimed to lock on, it didn't always focus right. It did do a bit better up closer:

The Sigma did much better on this one. It also has a more yellow cast than the Hexanon. And despite them both being set to f/8, with the fp on Aperture priority, the fp consistently gave the Sigma a little more exposure/slower shutter than the Hexanon.

I actually had better luck shooting this bumblebee with the Hexanon, despite the manual focus; the Sigma was never able to nail focus.

Yesterday I received a Minolta MD 28mm f/2.8 in virtually new condition, dedicated hood and everything, though I can't properly use it as I don't currently have my SR to L adapter with me. I managed to free-lens a shot wide open at minimum focus distance using a PK to L adapter and performance looks decent. The lens is compact and light without feeling plasticky and if performance is good I can see it being a viable option for travel, though to shoot on film too I'd really need to get a later (electronic) Minolta camera as they're smaller and lighter. All my Minolta film bodies are the older mechanical SR line which are nice to use but quite big and heavy.

Hard for me to say which one I like better... however, so far I haven't had a chance to shoot the kind of glossy/volumetric subjects that give the kind of fine tonal graduation that's made the Kiron a favorite of mine. The Hexanon's certainly doing a nice job on the flowers!

As always Schweppes is the model for any new lens in the household. This is the Olympus OM 85mm f/2 on the Lumix S5.

Is anyone here knowledgeable about the OM System? I've written a series of articles but am still trying to unravel the mystery of the different variants. Various sources disagree.

The OM system is one of the few significant legacy SLR mounts with which I've had no contact at all, despite fancying a nice OM camera for quite a few years.
