News Lumix S9 - new camera rumor roundup

It's gonna be a full frame GM1. And two pancakes. One zoom, one prime
I am a bit confused now seeing the images. I understand that a compact camera has a lens attached and it is not possible to remove it, right? like the Leica Q3 or the Fujifilm X100VI.

Is the S9 a compact camera in the sense that is small? Or is it possible to use with L-Mount interchangeable lenses?

Sorry that I sound a bit abrupt, but all the chaotic rumors don't help... Z04 975

The S9 will be a compact interchangeable lens camera with L-Mount. No compact camera.

First impressions are that I really like the look of the S9: I've been hoping for a rangefinder type S-series camera ever since I got my S5 and this, with it's Leica-esque design, is very appealing. I'm looking forward to seeing more, and I really hope Panasonic haven't held back on the photography features since they seem to be aiming the camera at "creators" with an emphasis on video.

The rumours are already quite clear. Seems like a S camera in a GM1 like body. Without EVF. But with IBIS and articulating screen. I like it. Hopefully it will have a mechanical shutter.
Alas, the GM1 comparison is not in its favor. As I’ve mentioned before, my experience with the GM1 is one of the biggest reasons for my “never again” response to a rear-screen-only camera. The GM1 was a lovely camera in many ways - but the tendency for the rear screen to wash out in bright light made it unusable at critical moments. (Trying to shoot an airplane in flight when you can’t see the screen? Good luck…)

Now, if it were taking after the GM5, that’s a completely different story! ^^;; The EVF doesn’t have to be perfect- just good enough to aim and shoot the camera in bright light.

(I’d hoped Panasonic had learned its lesson after the flak the GM1 took, but I guess not. :( )

...but Lumix could make an optional EVF, right? Or a third party brand.

Smallrig made a grip for the Nikon Zf and it was included in the price as a launching offer (at least in Germany).

I still have a very beautiful wooden grip (from J.B. Designs) for my already sold GX9 that maybe could fit in the S9 ;)

They'd have to have the 'hooks' for an EVF - attachment points and electrical connections.

A clip-on EVF would at least make it usable - but from my experience with the Sigma fp, it's not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.

Having it clip into the flash shoe, as with the GX1 and the Oly E-P5, is also less than ideal; a big advantage of the rangefinder config, to me, is having the EVF at the upper-left, instead of centered where your nose keeps touching the rear screen.

If it has an EVF… definitely interested.

If not… no sale.
I would be fine without an EVF if the rear screen was a tilting version. On my GX85, I rarely use the EVF as I prefer to "shoot from the hip" with the screen tilted out. I like lower angle shooting. Unfortunately an articulating screen is not so good for this in my experience.

We need a small fullframe RF style camera. It is a shame that Sony is dominating again this niche and noone does something against it.

Agree. A camera smaller and lighter then the S5 is entirely possible by removing extra interface items (the drive knob for one). Removing the EVF, however, is a bad decision. In fact I would be first in line for an S5 Mini if it had the improved EVF of the Mark II.

The Panasonic strength is in hybrid cameras, and they need to hew close to this in order to be distinctive. My primary interest is photography. Otherwise I'd be using Blackmagic.

I was thinking the exact same thing. The Lumix primes are arguably too big and unweildy for a handheld vlogging camera. Many are crying out for pancake lenses that would be suitable for a small camera and lots of bigger camera owners want them also.

I agree with the need for smaller lenses but do not want these to be compromised in quality. The current Lumix S primes are amazing but far too large for me. They have been optimised for video and that makes sense... even though they are not cinema lenses. They have a niche.

But we also need a compact photography-oriented set that can nonetheless be used for video as well. No need to match all the sizes of have perfect focus breathing. Size is far more important to me than those factors.

I can use a vintage prime plus adapter and still have a smaller working camera than possible with the existing lenses.

And, yes, the Sigma line are a good step in the right direction but still large in comparison with the film era.

Addendum: I didn't see the last page of this thread with the newest leak!

Well, compact camera, L-mount, OK. Two new pancake lenses... I am cautiously optimistic.

But no EVF? Sucks. I take photos in clubs where I do not want my screen ruining everyone else's experience. The opposite scenario is also a problem... bright exterior light.

And size? Not smaller than an S5. Only lacking the EVF hump. So no real gain here.

I fail to see the point. Why not buy the S5 MkII and get more camera?

The point (in my view) is that this camera is not likely aimed at the stills photography market.

It looks to be more of a competitor to the Sony ZV series and so is aimed at the younger "creators" who mainly do video and often have the camera pointed at themselves.

That doesn't address my issue at all, though.

The problem is that bright environmental light washes out the screen. You can't shoot if you can't see what you're shooting. Tilting the screen doesn't change that; you might be able to eliminate some of the reflections, but too much ambient light is too much ambient light.

That makes more sense than other options, I guess.*

I was thinking of it in terms of the GM1/GM5, where the GM5 came out so soon after the GM1 that it looked like the 5 was a direct reaction to negative feedback about the 1's lack of a viewfinder and physical controls. So this was starting to feel like they hadn't learned anything from that kerfladdle.

*Though L-mount seems like overkill for that market; does the extra quality from FF outweigh (literally) the extra size and mass of the camera and lenses, when you're doing lots of handheld shots pointed at yourself at arm's length? Something smaller and lighter like the GX series seems like it'd be a better fit.

...

For me, it looks a lot smaller than the S5. It's not only lacking the EVF hump. There cut everything above the mount, including the EVF hump and a lot of dials. Also it's missing the big grip and it looks less wide. It's also told, it's gonna be less think tham the FP. So Panasonic has shrunk it in every dimension.

Of course the hole shrinking has its downsides. Worse ergonomics and no evf. The camera is not for every use case. Back when I've shot MFT, I had two camera. A bigger one and a smaller one. I always preferred shooting with the bigger one. But on many occasions, I've took the smaller one, because it's easier to carry and I always find some space for it.

I think L-Mount is fine, but if it had an aps-c sensor everything would be smaller, and then an evf would be possible. But this is more cost effective. Take what you already have in stock, design the slimmest box those components fit in, marketing will do the rest. This is market driven. I am more interested in the new lenses… small 18-40 + new pancake. 18-40 would complement the 24-105 very well.

Yeah, they could pair well with the fp.

I don't know about the EVF... I was using the GX9 for photography for two years and I never used the small EVF. I even bought the rubber eye-cup for it but I used it just a couple of times and not more. Nowadays I use as my everyday carry camera the Ricoh GR3 and I don't need a EVF for it.

I think the EVF helps in big cameras and it is a joy to use for example in the S1R or the Leicas SL. An extremely small EVF like the one in the GX9 or the GM5 could be useful in an extreme situation. But I am not sure if the "content creators" (tiktokers, youtubers, instagramers, etc.), do need an EVF...
