*** October 2024 Image and Video Thread ***

You’ll see in the shot above that I’ve cropped it squarer than the 3:2 of the sensor.

Yes, that could be a reason why I like that image so much. I am a MFT nerd... hopeless... Z04 Troest

Unless I’m going XPan, I prefer a squarer format. 3:2 isn’t really a very good ratio in my opinion.

You mean no IBIS... Yeah nightmare!
Nothing to do with IBIS. :)

This is a lens that's long and heavy enough that on a small body like the fp, you have to concentrate to keep the far end from moving around in a circle. ^_- A larger body with a larger grip and more weight will balance the lens better.

And BTW, taken at 28mm @dirk !!
salt in my wounds....

I have 3 zooms which include 28mm. But I am not a zoom guy normally (except tele zoom)... Oh man, I am suffering... How long will it take until we will see a small and light 28mm FFL?

Another shot from Oslo.

This 35mm lens image looks a lot more "clear" than the one above with the 20-60 zoom. But your comment earlier is correct. This 3:2 ratio feels less appealing to me than the other 35mm shot, which you cropped. I also loved 6x6 with Medium Format images in the past. The aquare format gives an image a totally different impact. The 4:3 image format of MFT is a good step in that direction. But it is not the best format for every situations/image.

This is mostly down to the processing. I was trying to create a subtle "dreamy" effect.

The month is nearly over!

This is the old Cronulla Theatre which opened back in 1928. It was quite a large theatre seating over 1,500 people and had a beautiful art deco interior. It was redeveloped into a multiplex theatre the 1970s with only the original facade retained, although the building footprint looks largely the same as it was.

Just for fun I am posting two versions of the same photo - the first is a Leica Monochrome JPEG and the second is the colour version developed from the RW2 file.

And this link shows what the building looked like just before it was redeveloped into a multiplex in the mid-1970s (from this local newspaper article).

Both look great, I'll have to be using that Leica filter. So much for those who say the S9 isn't good for photography. Your verticals are spot on assuming no PP. I still like a VF though, even for video but I suppose you adapt quick if you don't have it.

The cinema has a face, why do they not make anything like this any longer? Modern architecture is inglurious... Profit/function before beauty. Belfast is now full of such new buildings. There are only 2 art deco cinema buildings left and they'll mysteriously burn down and be replaced with apartments. Not saying your cinema is art deco but preservation is key.

Thanks. I did have to fix the verticals given the angel I was shooting from. I did this in DxO PhotoLab with the Viewpoint add-in (usually just a single click to do it). Other than that, I did nothing else to the Leica Mono photo other than cropping and removing a sensor spot that I didn't know I had until I loaded the photo. For the colour photo it was just a crop and a small amount shadow lift.

The S9 really is a good photography camera, at least for me. I like not having an EVF as I take photos from a lower angle which in the street is much less noticeable to others.

Yes, it's sad when old buildings are lost to redevelopment. Sydney is much the same, a lot has been lost.

The exterior of this old theatre in Cronulla wasn't overtly art deco but the interior was. It was about 40 years old when I started going there in the 1960s but it was still original décor with beautiful architectural features and lighting. When it was redeveloped in the 1970s the whole structure was demolished but the owner was forced to retain the facade. Here is a photo showing that: Theatre Facade. Amazing that it survived.

That cat with the empty street is great. Job done - no mice anymore...
No mouse would dare show it's whiskers in this village given the number of stray cats around.
Some stunning sculpture in Oslo. S5 with 20-60 (this really is a superb little lens!).

I remember visiting there, Oslo's a nice city to spend a few days in.
