Been busy getting ready for and then working advance voting for the November election, but did manage a few moments to try out a new acquisition, a Nikon 105/4 Macro (Ai version):

(Hey, no one said you had to use a Macro lens just for macro shots...)

On the whole, while the Micro-Nikkor was usable with the fp, it was hard to hold steady; the S5 was a more comfortable platform.

I enjoyed it, it was a cosy 14C as the storm came from the SW direction. Otherwise I've been frozen in mid summer on the north Atlantic coast with a north wind.

I'm quite steady but the wind blasts in places were mental and I had to walk diagonally.

I haven't had a wash yet so I'm still salty with a proportion of raw sewage no doubt :oops:

It's mad that loads of people throughout the world have never seen a coast, sea or ocean. It's good to have it so close but I'm looking for a place in remote NW Ireland beside the Atlantic and true landscape heaven and dark skies... Bortle 2-3 darkness and the Sigma 14 f1.4 for it. The storms up there are something else and endless places for photography that haven't yet been done, unfortunately by the time I'll get one the solar max causing these amazing aurora will largely be gone. But it's good regardless.

You mean no IBIS... Yeah nightmare!

I used to have Pentax APSC with 300mm prime and 60-250. Whilst it had IBIS it had none through the finder but it was good foundation and now with dual IS in 24-105 and 70-300 it is amazing.

Yeah not using it for macro... I'm happy with 0.5x macro with my Lumix zooms, no real want for more but the prime I'd like is the Lumix 100 f2.8 for the 3d pop and rendering it does, as well as small and so light. It has the Leica look.

Those images you took look promising, on a Lumix camera will give you a better time but like I said it's good training but I did mine on 4.5x again.

As for having to MF the like of your Nikkor I couldn't be bothered with that after years of it. The 8 way joystick on the S5ii just nails it quicker and the MF aid is there if I do want it on the focus ring. I'm still learning the camera and it is there when I unintentionally move the ring and with magnification.

I enjoyed filming the storm plus a few stills, S5ii & 24-105 f4 are still covered in sea salt :cool:

Very interesting video. I wonder what you use as a microphone in such windy conditions? Do you use an external microphone with a dead cat or the internal one from the camera itself? Have you used some kind of wind noise reduction in post?

The free version of DaVinci Resolve runs well on a M1 Mac. It would handle the stabilization issues. It would be great if you had narration to further explain the scenes.

Internal mics, Smallrig deadcat and the gain turned down but I'll need to check the exact level for you... It's important to know this as it's easy to ruin a good video in such conditions. Only stitched the clips in post, so it's SooC snd I'm delighted with the quality, so glad I chose the S5ii.

I only hope to get better at videography and it's an interesting pursuit.

BTW I exclusively use the EVF for video, it massively helped stabilty holding close and resting on objects in those conditions, I'm not sure I'd like having to use the LCD.

It's a finger up to the nerd mac haters, it's a superb fast silent computer and I spent 1000s since the 90's trying to make a silent PC. Fan noise drives me insane, totally unacceptable and I've zero tolerance to it.

I was happy enough with the stability on standard setting, it showed the storm force at times.

Narration? Really? I don't like those videos myself, I'd rather put up some text which you can do in iMovies but I'm new to this besides Winows movie maker at university some years back. I quite like the Japanese YouTuber who does train travel without narration and all text. I can't stand most YouTubers nattering on.

I like peace and quiet :cool:

I'll keep DaVinci in mind but that's paid software and I'll not be making videos everyday.

The results look goo though Travis. Love the leaf and bark shot.

The snip below shows the stack from PS on the left and Zerene on the right. Look at the edge of the mushroom bottom left and across to where the head crosses the stem. You can see that PS has got the masking wrong, showing blur on the stem when it should be sharp and some really ugly stitching to the left of the stem.

Davinci Resolve has a very good free version, would be more than enough for you I think.

On a PC you only get 8-bit video support, but on a mac you can get 10-bit video support .

Its really really good software
