Rumors New cameras on October 8th?

Seems the word on the street is that it's a minor launch:

- S5D - the OG S5 with an updated EVF
- 18-40 announced for sale
- New firmware for most current models with some new film simulations

Nothing of any interest for me, but the S5D might be the cheapest FF mirrorless camera on the market which can't be bad.

Apparently, all the really cool new stuff (new S1 etc) will be early 2025.

Go and stick a 150-600 on that Sony and peer through the tiny finder :p
A comment about that. The Sony A7C2 uses the same viewfinder as the Sony a6700, which I have. I use this camera with the 70-350mm lens (105-525mm FF equivalent) and the viewfinder works fine. I would not want the viewfinder on A7C2 to stop someone from getting it.

Back to the thread, if the release tomorrow is the 18-40mm lens and firmware updates for the S5II and S5IIx I'll be really happy.

There is nothing at all on the LUMIX social media accounts so I can only assume that any announcement will be quite minor. Was it only the L-rumors website that said this would be a major announcement? In the past, Panasonic have usually posted a short teaser on Instagram a few days ahead of an announcement.

Rumour sites and YT channels are undeniably click-baity by their nature and monetised otherwise 'usually' why would they exist unless they are real fan boys with nothing better to do.

Being an ex-Pentaxian I know the pure unadulterated hope from this stuff which I never bought into. Them guys cling onto new stuff arriving like a 2nd arrival of Jesus, but there is less need for that here.

Saying this I seen a stat stating 140k Lumix MILC sales, I thought this would be significantly higher globally if this was the case... If this is correct and maybe only 1/14 Lumix buyers want a S1Rii then that 10k potential sales figure could be a reason why there is no potential S1Rii as this would be the same as the purported 10k Pentax demand and why it isn't big enough for them to do it?

Yes it's not the same etc with many different parameters between those brands and I've no real idea on those sales figures above.

140k amongst all M43 and FF cameras globally sounds too low, if Canon has 10x sales then 1.4M MILCs? Eh is that all in 7 billion population?

About 1/2000 world population buys a MILC? Maybe that is about right? :)

I do not know whetther these numbers are correct, but even if they would be correct, the situation differs from Pentax.

Panasonic decided that they want to get into the fullframe market mext to thier MFT system. They have to invest millions in R&D and if you are the new boy in the neighborhood, you have to expect losses in the first 5 years. Therefore Panasonic is forced to offer various different models, even if they do not make profit on it. If they would not do it, nobody would buy into this new system.

Someone who is interested to buy a cheap second hand Lumix S5 will not buy it, if there is not also a S5ii, S1R and S1H in the current product line. For the buyer this is a long term investment. Even if he does not buy at the beginning the S1R, he wants to have the option to do so in 5 years.

With Pentax this is different. Pentax exists since decades. From film to digital. They have already many customers, but their market share shrinked to a size for which many ideas are not profitable anymore. They see people only leaving their system, not joining. This is due to wrong management decision in the past and wrong marketing. Pentax had many really great cameras. Film and DSLRs. It is a shame how this went over the last 20 years with Pentax.

Today it is almost imposible to keep up with the competition. There will never be a MLU from Pentax. And this is the longterm death for this system. Ricoh has not the deep pockets to invest in a shrinking photo market or to invest so much money to invent a new MLU system with a new lens mount . I can understand that. Olympus sold its camera business too as we know, although other areas were profitable.

But at least the Ricoh GR is a success. If I would be Pentax/Ricoh, I would join the L-Mount. Pentax makes some excellent lenses which could be transferred to an L-Mount version. And it is cheaper to design only one Pentax body and a few lenses if there are already many others for this Mount available. Less risks for their customers and therefore a lower barrier for all old Pentaxians to follow this route. all would be happy and Ricoh would make money again with cameras and lenses.

Agree, that is what keeps those in the Pentax division in a job but for how long given profit versus sentiment... Anyway not our worry!

I doubt Pentax could offer L-mount anything TBH, whatever is left of them is well behind the curve, Leica are using Panasonic designed lenses.

There is a reason why DJI are now in L-mount and Pentax are not.

I doubt Pentax could offer L-mount anything TBH,

DA 43mm limited and 77mm limited. I would buy them immediately. The Pentax 43 limited on a Lumix S9 is beside the 24MP vs 60MP sensor a "95% Leica Q3 43" copy

You can buy those and adapt them although no AF or aperture control. I thought you'd mention the 77mm for the unique pop.

The old 43mm Pentax can't match the new lens on your new Q3 43, not even close, no mission. The 77 has a unique look but not the 43.

Adding legacy designs is not good enough for L-mount, where do you stop? Like I said they have nothing to offer. For goodness sake they have tried to sell screwdrive 1980s lenses with new coatings to Pentaxians today...

Screwdrive lenses... Yeah welcome to L-mount Daumenhoch

I have both of them and use them with an adapter. But the adapater makes them big. I would hope for a new, similar small design but with native L-Mount, so that they are as big on L-Mount as they are on Pentax mount.

I have not compared them to the Q3 43 yet, but they 43mm blows the Sigma 45/2.8 out of the water. I showed in another threads already comparison shots. These 2 lenses are excellent even on a 24MP sensor. Without any AI and firmware corrections.

Imagine that with a native L-Mount in that small size! That would be a perfect match for the Lumix S9

That design is for the registration distance of ~44mm so an L-mount would need to have that distance same as using an adapter so it obviously makes no sense.

To change it to native MILC requires a change in lens design...you get this right?

It's not happening.

Again... they have nothing to offer. Leica are using Panasonic lens designs... Case closed?
Pentax joining L-mount is farcical beyond any alternative comprehensive thought... Do you know they are opposed to MILC? It kind of makes joining L-mount rather incompatible

Yes, of course. Nothing wrong about it. Sigma did that already with its DSLR lenses. First they offered them with a kind of "internal adapter" and later they redesigned them to make them smaller.

Pentax has prooven that they are able to design some really good lenses and bodies (APS-C). They have the know-how. There is no reason why they should not be able to do this also for another lens mount.

Again, we are talking hyptheticaly here. I have no information that Ricoh is interested to join the L-Mount. But just by logic, this would be a better alternative for Ricoh then to sit there and wait until nobody buys the old Pentax system anymore. They either have to do something or they can close the DSLR divison soon and keep the Ricoh GR line only.

Sigma and Leica offer one body only too (with 2 different sensor sizes) by the way. That is the great advantage of such an alliance. If there are many partners in that alliance, every single partner can focus on what it is good at and what is profitable for them. The system as a whole benefits from it and turns this into a big system with a huge choice, although every partner did only contribute a small piece of the cake to it.

Thanks John.

Unfortunately that will be 1:00am here in Sydney so I will be sound asleep and will have to catch up with the new tomorrow. o_O

I presume the video(s?) from @Richard Wong will be more to the point anyway, can you see these directly :)

There's nothing about the 18-40 on his channel yet, I assume it will be queued up ready to publish automatically at the anointed time (which would be 3:00am in New Zealand!).
