News Lumix S9 - new camera rumor roundup

I've seen stores list it for a lick over 200.000 JPY, which amounts to less than 1200 EUR. Shipping will probably be another 100 EUR on top (I want DHL Express because I am not the most patient...) and since I have a flat in Switzlerand VAT will be another 8,1 % on top, so I guess all in all we are looking at 1400 EUR. And the free 28/F8, of course. So savings of about 300 EUR for me.
Do you know if it will be possible to change the language in the camera from Japanese? In the past, Panasonic cameras were locked to Japanese language and could not be changed.

So what colour?
Black, for now. In Japan the base colour is available in Black & Silver with black leather. But for around 50 EUR you can let Panasonic Japan change the holstery to a different colour. So I am getting the camera now and then when I fly to Japan in July/August/September I am going to get the red leather.

From the official specsheet on the Japanese website the camera is supposed to support English (and Chinese, Korean). So if English is fine, it'll be all good. But if you want something more exotic like German, French, Italian, etc. you'll have to buy it in Europe.

Nice video about the S9:

I watched this again, and the big take-away for me is that an FF video camera with a legacy prime lens delivers wonderfully cinematic footage. Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake, but I'm beginning to think that I should do some video! I have the OM 24/2.8, 50/1.8 and 100/2.8 primes so I'm already kitted out.

I can also see that the S9 makes much more sense used in this way - the lack of an EVF won't be such an impediment as it would be for stills.

I heard there´s a difference in the grip of the body depending on the color. Black is said to be the best choice. Strange...

You haven't happened to see the 26mm f8 advertised anywhere have you, and if so, how much?

Markus, you mean this?

That's the one. I've already seen it down to $318 AUD with free delivery here, & it's not even released yet as far as I know :) I had a look on Japan eBay, nothing turning up as yet. Split kits should yield some really cheap lenses I'm guessing :)

There´s no need for the 26/f8. I´ve already ordered the Sigma 45/2.8.
Just put off the lens hood:

I owned the Olympus body cap.
It was fun for a few hours. 90 EUR mostly wasted.
I will not get the 26 F8 and I think it did the S9 a disservice at launch.
I am constantly amazed by those that can't just say or admit that a particular piece of gear isn't for them, but have to continue on and try to imply, or say outright that it's "damaging the brand" or in some way "a disservice" to it. What gives?

Great lens the Sigma 45mm but the Sigma 24mm f3.5 would be a closer match. I am thinking of getting it. Curiously, in my local market the Sigma 24mm f2 is about the same price as the f3.5 at the moment

There was a comparison of the two Sigma 24mm lenses in this forum by Jonathan-Mac. My conclusion reading the thread was the 24mm f/3.5 is the better lens, at least for me. I've been thinking about that lens for the S9.

Yes, that's the conclusion I've reached too.

I recently saw that Lenstip had reviewed both lenses in the past:
...and on the f2 version they found it had moustache distortion which can be difficult to correct.

Just a small tidbit: S9 pre-orders have beaten Panasonics expectations, meaning that chances are people won't get the camera at launch and stock will be short for a while: https://petapixel.com/2024/06/11/wh...s-already-outselling-panasonics-expectations/

I don't remember seeing this kind of press release from Pana for the S5ii launch, the G9ii launch or the GH6 launch - or pretty much any of their recent cameras. And Japanese companies are mandated to put out such notices due to regulations for publicly-traded companies in Japan - i.e. this isn't some PR blurb but Panasonic has to go public if they see larger than expected demand so that shareholders are kept in the loop.

Two things:
1) This camera looks to be having a great start, at least by Panasonic standards, and Panasonic being successful with their cameras is good news for every single person invested in the L mount ecosystem. It keeps the ecosystem alive, it ensures Panasonic continues to develop new camera bodies and, especially with the success of the S9, could inspire them to come up with another compact camera body in the future - maybe even one that's going to be proper hybrid or even stills focussed.

2) People that predicted this camera would just crash and burn really struggle to see beyond the tip of their own nose when it comes to photography. The inability of some to just imagine that different people might have different interests and that a well-priced, small and stylish camera body with strong video functions might hold appeal to people, even if it's not the wet dream of a traditional stills photographer, was genuinely baffling to me. I saw a lot of people like that in a different forum, who were convinced this camera would spell doom for Panasonic, but apparently Lumix lives to see another day.

I wonder how the sales numbers are Japan vs. the other regions, since the S9 is around 500€ cheaper in Japan vs. Europe.

But isn't it always the case with mirrorless cameras? Not only Panasonic?

Usually Panasonic cameras arrive a little bit earlier and are very good available here in Germany. For example many pre orders for the S5II got fullfilled earlier than estimated and it was almost everywhere available after release, without long shipping times.

That's not the case for the S9.

The PetaPixel is for the US and it seems showing the same picture as here in Europe.

From Japan, I've seen tweets that said the first few batches are already completely sold and you have to currently wait at least three month.

The supply chains are still a little damaged, but should be in better shape compared to 2022/2023.
