Which lenses are you missing?

"The plastic 40mm f/8 "pancake" manual focus $200 toy lens that was announced with the S9.

I can imagine the scene in the Panasonic office:

"The 18-40mm is not going to be ready in time for the S9 release but we need a small lens to provide as a kit! What can you give us in a week?"

"We could make a 40ish f/8 plastic, manual focus toy lens that sells for a profit at $50 but it would seriously devalue the good Lumix name..."

"Good, do it, but quadruple the price!"

Are you seriously trying to tell us that this statement is actually a compliment? Calling it a plastic toy shows no bias or prejudice? Really? Lol lol lol.
Have you ever actually touched one?

You'd also be quite wrong about my attitude toward grammar. I actually make every attempt to get that right. I am human though, and will happily admit I can make mistakes.
 
There's a big difference between bias and prejudice and acknowledging that a product has serious drawbacks, ones which will outweigh it's advantages to the vast majority of users, and especially when the price seems high. I'm the first to say that most Canon products don't represent good value for money in many cases when bought new, yet their little RF 50mm f/1.8 costs the same as the 26mm pancake. Yes, they're very different focal lengths of course but it looks very bad for the Lumix when at the same cost Canon can make a lens that has AF, is over four stops faster and has filter threads. And it's a far more useful focal length. I'm sure the Lumix can produce fine photos when it's in it's element but f/8, no AF and no filter threads is VERY limiting.

Except you didn't just make the point that the lens is not suitable for your uses, instead you went on and deliberately wrote a long, mocking spiel in regards to everything you thought Panasonic had done wrong, and then to top it off, directly said that they're ripping people off. Which is what I quoted. I get you don't like it, I'm fine with that. I'm not even bothered that you call it a plastic toy. But the least you could do, as admit it's your bias & prejudice speaking.

That lens design & optical formula has been in use since 1985 I think. Just shy of 30 years. Yeah, it's had a couple of different focus motors, and in the RF mount an Aspherical element added to the mix. And it's also on of the easiest focal lengths to design. I'm guessing it would also have a much much higher sales volume too, which all contribute to lower pricing.
I can't speak for the RF version, but earlier versions build quality was garbage. Awful. I've owned a couple, the STM was better, but I think the Lumix 26mm is of much nicer/better construction. Having owned, and used both. My 26mm has been kicking around in my camera bag for a few months now, with its lack of lens cap, I use it at work regularly (metal fabrication industry), it lives in my toolbox a fair bit, & it still looks pristine. Like I wrote, they can make more plastic toys, I'll happily buy and use them if they suit my wants or requirements. Without bias.

Does the LUMIX Tether app work on a smartphone or tablet? If so, I'd be more than glad to plug my iPad into my S5 and use it in Live View mode as an enormous external monitor.

That is a cool idea. Did anybody try this yet? I am not at home right now....

Mocking, yes, because it's a lens that deserves to be mocked, or rather Panasonic do for releasing it. Some things deserve to be mocked and there is no wrong in doing so.

Bias: inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair.
Prejudice: preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Nope, neither of those fit simply because my disregard for the 26/8 is based on facts and reason - it is slow, it is manual focus, it is over-priced, it doesn't have a filter thread. When someone dislikes something you don't, that doesn't make them biased or prejudiced, it just means their opinion differs.

Please do not continue to drag this thread down any further with your insults.
 
One less is missing, with the arrival of an s85/1.8 today. Wonderful test images, and sealed primes are always valuable. I see why this is well liked by so many. A fine match with the 20-60.

Still awaiting a sealed and S9-friendly (small) 55-220ish telezoom.. or a compact (slower) version of the 35-150?
 
I wouldn't say I was missing it, but if I saw a really good price on the Lumix S 35mm f1.8, I'd be sorely tempted to pick one up for my kit. A 35 & 50mm pair of fast primes would be a lovely little setup for car/bike shows. I nearly grabbed one when I was in NZ, but when I hit the buy button it reverted back to the pre new years sale price. So I left that one
 
I'm still looking for a good used example of the lumix-s 100mm macro; the new ones are a bit more than I'd like to pay for a lens I won't use all that often but nothing else I've got will do its job. Otherwise I believe I'm set.

I'd love to try this lens more for the 3D pop. It is an amazing thing and so light you eould take it out more often versus the previous macro 750 beasts weight and size. You can do macro and portraits at the same time, a different mindset. It's the only prime I'd like but so expensive :D
