Which lenses are you missing?

- Sigma 45mm f2.8 i-series. Underperforms the other lenses in the i-series line up.
I would respectfully disagree with that assessment! I love the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 the most of all my Sigmas.

I would say it performs differently than the other contemporary lenses, perhaps a bit less clinically, and that's what I like about it.

I think Sigma said in an interview that they designed the 45/2.8 by purpose differently than the rest of the i-series.

Maybe they decided at that time already that they will bring out another 40mm or 45mm with different design goals in the future.

Sigma likes to experiment and takes sometimes unusual roads with their cameras and lenses.

This is good for us. Without that, we would never had things like a Foveon sensor, a fp/fpL or the i-series etc.

So you just hate the Leica q3 part
No, I do not hate the Q3 body. The body is really good. I just see the Leica branding as a disadvantage for the trips I do with it. Others do not mind because they are always in safe areas.

And I find the price tag too high. Even for Leica levels.

It is at the end of the day like every other compact camera. If you upgrade, you have to throw body and lens away.

Would you sell the q3 if such a lens is available ?

That depends of the 43mm lens on offer. Ask me when it is available and tested. But it is an option for sure. I do not need the Leica logo for my ego ;)

Another point: Bear in mind that a Q3/Q3 43 is small for sure, but never really pocketable like a Ricoh GR3/GR3x.

Therefore if you have to have it around your shoulders or in a bag to carry it around, the advantage is not that big compared to an S9 or S5 etc.

Still, the size of the lens in combination with that body results in a very positive feeling.

I rather have a q3 then a l-mount 28/2

Do not fall in the marketing trap. I was not that happy with the 28mm lens of the Q3. The 43mm of the Q3 43 is on a completely different level on this 60MP sensor - in my personal view.

Unfortunately I do not have a 60MP L-Mount body to compare the lenses in a fair way. But the Sigma 50/2.0 DG DN was no slouch on a S5ii compared to the Leica 43mm. I will test that more in the coming weeks.

Same goes for the Ricoh GR3 vs. the Leica 28mm on the Q3. But I no longer have the normal Q3, so no further testing

I wanted to test both Q3 for myself. With Leica equipment you seldom get unbiased reviews. I am also biased, but the other way around, because I had negative experiences in the past with Leica gear.

Let me put it this way. I knew after around 50 images that I will sell again the Leica Q3 with its 28mm asap.

I knew after around 10 images that I want to keep the Q3 43. That sais something...

I will keep it at least for some time to find arguments to justify the price for myself or find cheaper/better alternatives from Lumix/Sigma :)

I knew that the q2 / q3 was bigger/heavier then Fujifilm X100. After seeing sample pictures of the q3, everytime I use my gr3 this feeling arises: “what if I just get a q3, sell everything else, and be done with it.“

But thank you for bursting my bubble

After seeing images of the new 16-55 by Fuji, a voice in my head popped-up: get an xt5 + new 16-55/2.8 and then you get the 18/1.4 and 90/2 again … less weight and your precious 18/1.4 returns.

But no, I stick to my L-Mount (for now)

Such a bitch that L-Mount does not make the eqv 28/2 and a small 135/2.8

Sorry, I meant the 26mm f8. Dirk is confusing me with his longings for a 4x mm prime! :)
Ahhhhh, I see. Can't agree with you there, I love mine. Super light, sharp, nice colour & contrast, and a very usable focal length. It's about the final nail in the coffin for my m4/3 gear, pop it on the S5 & I have no desire to take any of my m4/3 bodies. Throw in the cheap yet brilliant S 50 f1.8, & there's not a lot I can't shoot in a very affordable, compact & lightweight kit. I'd love to see Panny do a 16 or 17mm in the same form factor, MF and all. I'd buy that for sure.

Well, each to their own. A fixed focal length, fixed f8, MF lens is about as far from the sort of lens I'd want to buy. But something akin to the Nikon 40mm f2.8 I could be tempted by, esp if Panasonic or Sigma ever produce an S9/Fp with a viewfinder.

Actually, if you use the 26mm lens in crop mode (jpeg only) the focal lenght is 39mm, right? I am thinking about getting a used one ant try it out with the 47mpx sensor of the S1R...

Here is a tutorial about that:

Exactly. But you aren't everyone. We are all different. I paid full retail for mine, couldn't be bothered waiting for sales etc, and I haven't regretted it for a single second. It's simply a basic, unpretentious, fun, portable & totally affordable little lens that I take everywhere. And shoot more than if I didn't own one. I'm not seeing any downsides.

Edit -and surprisingly, I'm not seeing Ebay and the like being inundated with 26mm f8 pancakes simply being dumped. And there's been plenty of time for the novelty to have worn off

Ha, a pancake lens on the humongous S1R! It’s certainly something “different“.

I agree, Markus. I have seen just 2 of them on EBay Germany for 140 € and 150 € each in all this months. But this price is very tempting...

I like the idea of this little lens, it's a bit like using my first Halina 35mm fixed aperture camera except spades more IQ.

Along with all the LUT capability it gives a different mindset to neurotic thinking about lenses and you can just enjoy looking for a photo or capturing those moments when you couldn't be arsed lugging around a big lens with the serious photography mindset, and you know how it is when those moments arrive and you don't have your camera. That said the 18-40 with AF might be better for you for a similar purpose.

Another big advantage is the lack of intimidation and asking "can I take your photo" will inevitably get more compliance, we all know a big lens scares people.

This small lens naturally has a parallel with film photography and it's sometimes very appealing to nail SooC photos which can often require more skill rather than relying on PP.

Yes I could use legacy MF primes instead, but once you adapt them they aren't so small and I generally dislike the colours, lack of saturation/contrast and no lens profiles. The 26 f8 and 18-40 have modern colours and contrast not needing PP corrections.

So I'm certainly for the 26 f8, it's also an entry for some new photographers into the world of MF despite the fixed f8. It slows them down and should make compositioning more considerate, basically the classical photography training.

I've sort of kept half an eye out, even though I've already got mine, and the only ones I've seen are from eBay Japan. And only a couple. By the time you add shipping, you may as well buy local. Not seen any sales either, let alone fire sales. Compare that to the flood of 25mm f1.7 m4/3 lenses that hit eBay every time Panasonic runs a promotion:) There's probably only $20 or $30 difference between all the retailers here too. I kind of get the feeling that Panasonic will just keep it in their lineup, and sell it for a reasonable price where they're not losing money.
