S1Rii loan this weekend

I am thinking about trading the S1R + S5 original for the S1Rii... The S5 original belongs to my wife, but she would be owner of the S5II, with better video and AF performance... And I would be a proud owner of the S1Rii + S5IIx.

I think it is a win win situation... Except for my wallet

The trouble is that they are worth so little. I got quoted £700 for the S1R and £350 for the S1. I suspect the S5 will be worth even less.

I think I'll keep the S1 anyhow since I really like these big old bodies and the S1's IQ is just superb. It's not worth selling it for £350.

Yes, I have the impression that in mpb, for example, they offer less and less money... have you thought about selling them here in the L-mount forum?

You do get a lot of points for trying to convince your self and your wallet that you actually need the S1Rii (says the person spending too much on two new lenses in the last few weeks).

Also, I have seen some chatter that suggests LR's support of the S1Rii is not producing the best quality images compared with other software.

Remember there was a “preliminary” S1RII RAW for LR when the camera was first introduced, and then a “final” RAW for LR many weeks later. With my eyes the final version is quite good, better than the preliminary version, and LR is is now my default for the S1RII.

I have to say that I have no complaints with what I'm seeing in LR (I have the subscription of course so I'm running the latest version).

I'm guessing most people here don't want the old gen S1 models (and of course we're still a pretty small community), but I may give it a whirl.

I’ve gotten used to it. A key if you use it as a tilt screen for photography, pull it back from the left side so it doesn’t try to swing. It is certainly an upgrade from the clunky screen on the S1H. I used it for photos at a family gathering a couple of nights ago and didn’t even think about it.

Good idea.

But I my complaints about it are about using it in portrait mode.

On the S1/S1R, you can just tilt the screen up from the left side and, voila, job done. Also, the camera realises you've done this and disables the eye detect switching to/from the EVF so stray hand movements near the eyepiece are ignored.

With the S1Rii, you need to tilt the screen from the right until it's almost 90 degrees from it starting position, then flip it through 180 degrees on its pivot, then bend it down some to view it from above. When all that's done, the camera doesn't think you've moved the screen so the eye detect is still active meaning the screen will cut off if you move your hand too close to the eyepiece. If you want to disable the EVF switching, you need to slightly tilt it on its other axis. I don't know whether this is due to some limitation in sensors on the screen carrier mechanism, or maybe a bug? Either way, it's not a great experience compared to the original design.

I can appreciate that the S1Rii has better high ISO performance. Since I rarely shoot at 1600 or higher, I can live with using noise reduction software for those case. Sure, it would be nice not have to do so. What would interest me is dynamic range at low iso 100. Any improvements there?

Not handy for sure. You can push the LVF button twice to turn off eye detect.
