Post here if you've ordered an S1Rii

These are my reasons:

- Almost same resolution as the S1R
- Almost as good at high ISO and shadow lifting as the S5
- Smaller and lighter than the S1R
- Latest PDAF & fancy AI AF
- HHHR, Live Comp etc all in one camera
- Latest firmware etc with updates
- Access to Lumix Lab
- Better battery life than S1R

And maybe a few more...

For those who are on the fence, please keep in mind that the S1rii is actually cheaper than it seems, at least for customers ordering from U.S. retailers. If you order from B&H or Adorama (or some other retailers) you can get a free 320GB SanDisk Pro-Cinema CFexpress Type B memory card. That card costs about $200 at full retail price, or about $180 on sale. So the actual cost of S1rii is just a tad over $3000. ;)

I am torn. If the AF tracking would be better for kids sport than the S5ii, then the higher resolution could be an advantage for me. I could gain reach with cropping in post = telezooms can be smaller. Otherwise I would prefer a camera with only 24MP.

The other "cons" for me is size and weight. It would be no improvement vs. my S5ii and I originally wanted to buy a new body only if it is smaller and lighet than than my S5ii.

But this cropping capability is seductive. If there would be a pixel binning feature, this would be a lot easier to decide.

Great Paul!! Looking forward to see your excellent pictures with the S1Rii, in order to decide if I get one too.

Did you sell your S1R and S1 already?

Also: If I convert either my S1 or S5 to full-spectrum for astro, that eliminates one of the reasons for buying the SR1II, since I would then not use it for astro. In that case, do I just accept the AF limitations of my existing S1R for wildlife, and drop the pre-order for the S1RII?
If you only want to use the converted camera for Astro think about the full spectrum conversion! The full spectrum is a good option for infrared pictures (color and mono), because you can use it for all variants, depending on filter
But for Astro you always need a filter, even on uwa lenses where filter sometimes is not possible!

That the reason why my S5 is only astro modified, with extend red range to cover the ha light. With this camera I don‘t need any „base“ filter

You had 3 LMount bodies at the same time? You are worse than me ;)
I still have 3 bodies too: the S1R, the S5II and the astro converted S5…
That is my problem: I have fast AF with the S5II and high res for studio and architecture (where AF is not so important) with the S1R. The S1RII looks better in every topic than the old S1R, but I bought the S1R for 2400 (that was also my most expensive camera in 40 years) and it is still doing it’s job very well. And even by selling both bodies (no spare afterwards) the difference will be still around 2000€ !
So I will wait for more „need“ or better price…
But in general I think the camera is a bold move by Panasonic and I hope the market will raise now to strengthen the l-mount!

Yes. They'll be off to MPB tomorrow! I'll have only the S5 until the S1Rii arrives. I'm sure I'll cope. The S5 delivers great results!
Heh. Well, yeah.

I admit, even with all the other goodies, I put low-light at higher priority than higher resolution, so if I upgraded my S5 it'd be to the S5ii. Most likely. ^^;;

I’m working all day, even a late dinner tonight, so I’ve not had much chance to go through the YouTube reviews. I did see Chris and Jordan, that’s all. And I see the comments here about Gerald Undone and his views on rolling shutter. I’ll watch that next when I get a chance. My first thought, rolling shutter has never been much of a problem in the past with the S1H and the S5IIx, and in any case I have the GH7.

I did watch Gerald Undone, and his rolling shutter measurements. It is concerning, not as good as a 5Dii. I’ll try to catch more YouTube reviews - probably Richard’s next.

As for rolling shutter, I wonder if there's less of it when shooting in APS-C mode? IOW, is the readout speed faster in cropped mode compared to full-frame, yielding less jello?

Given the high resolution of the new sensor, I'm guessing 4K APS-C video from the new camera might look quite good.

The S5ii and S1Rii use different battery grips... BG1 for S5ii, I thought I read somewhere they were the same, I dreamt it or wrongly assumed such.1000024271.jpg1000024273.jpg

It already looks amazing on S5ii, for the same codec and output I don't imagine it's any better on S1Rii except rolling shutter might be improved if it is using an even smaller proportion of the sensor. However S5ii is more cropped in 4k 50/60 modes so I'm not sure and it gets complicated... Need a video uber geek to answer

This rolling shutter in video I think gets blown out of proportion. For a few it is important, 99% of video it simply isn't. Those pan tests violently panning the camera are rather ridiculous as where would you actually do this? Almost all video is static or slow moving. Exceptions are motorsport or similar where vertical buildings, fences etc. are in the frame. The video AF nailing and tracking the subject is more apparent and important to viewers.

I tried panning a fast moving cormorant one day with S5ii 4k 50 eq. 450mm on Lumix 70-300 and it is difficult to even keep it in the frame across the horizon. Those birds are so fast skimming across the waves and rolling shutter not an issue against water.

Compared to the video footage I have from years ago on Pentax DSLR we are now in video heaven and this critical nit-picking concentrating on the blown out of proportion negatives is rather sad LoL I'm still in awe of what S5ii video does, nevermind the S1Rii.

I'm undoing Gerald :p and what a stoopid name!

It's unexpected bad in the higher resolution modes. Theoretically Panasonic should get similar results to the DJI Ronin 8k, but the measurements of Gerald Undone seems significantly worse. It even seems to be worse in video than it is in 40 fps photo mode. It actually has to be worse, because 40 fps would not be possible with his measurements of the video modes.

But it seems much better in 4k modes. If you record 4k60 fps without DRE, what is still oversampled, you get about the same results as an Nikon Z8 for example.

Maybe it's a pre release firmware issue, could also be a processor issue or a heat issue. However, would be nice for video shooters to get more options to increase the readout speed. In 4k 120fps, you can see what's possible with line skipping.
