Great Paul!! Looking forward to see your excellent pictures with the S1Rii, in order to decide if I get one too. These are my reasons:
- Almost same resolution as the S1R
- Almost as good at high ISO and shadow lifting as the S5
- Smaller and lighter than the S1R
- Latest PDAF & fancy AI AF
- HHHR, Live Comp etc all in one camera
- Latest firmware etc with updates
- Access to Lumix Lab
- Better battery life than S1R
And maybe a few more...
Yes. They'll be off to MPB tomorrow! I'll have only the S5 until the S1Rii arrives. I'm sure I'll cope. The S5 delivers great results!Did you sell your S1R and S1 already?
If you only want to use the converted camera for Astro think about the full spectrum conversion! The full spectrum is a good option for infrared pictures (color and mono), because you can use it for all variants, depending on filterAlso: If I convert either my S1 or S5 to full-spectrum for astro, that eliminates one of the reasons for buying the SR1II, since I would then not use it for astro. In that case, do I just accept the AF limitations of my existing S1R for wildlife, and drop the pre-order for the S1RII?
I still have 3 bodies too: the S1R, the S5II and the astro converted S5…You had 3 LMount bodies at the same time? You are worse than me![]()

I did watch Gerald Undone, and his rolling shutter measurements. It is concerning, not as good as a 5Dii. I’ll try to catch more YouTube reviews - probably Richard’s next. And I see the comments here about Gerald Undone and his views on rolling shutter. I’ll watch that next when I get a chance.
As for rolling shutter, I wonder if there's less of it when shooting in APS-C mode? IOW, is the readout speed faster in cropped mode compared to full-frame, yielding less jello?I did watch Gerald Undone, and his rolling shutter measurements. It is concerning, not as good as a 5Dii. It already looks amazing on S5ii, for the same codec and output I don't imagine it's any better on S1Rii except rolling shutter might be improved if it is using an even smaller proportion of the sensor. However S5ii is more cropped in 4k 50/60 modes so I'm not sure and it gets complicated... Need a video uber geek to answerGiven the high resolution of the new sensor, I'm guessing 4K APS-C video from the new camera might look quite good.
I'm not sure someone that goes by the name Oiche is in much of a position to be throwing stones lol lol.I'm undoing Geraldand what a stoopid name!
Just go buy it. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permissionI'm going to buy an s1rii - I just have to wait maybe 5 years for prices to come down and my wife to let me![]()
It's unexpected bad in the higher resolution modes. Theoretically Panasonic should get similar results to the DJI Ronin 8k, but the measurements of Gerald Undone seems significantly worse. It even seems to be worse in video than it is in 40 fps photo mode. It actually has to be worse, because 40 fps would not be possible with his measurements of the video modes.I did watch Gerald Undone, and his rolling shutter measurements.
