New firmware update S5ii(X)

DaVinci Studio cost only 300$ so if you really need this, it's not an impossible investment
For lots of people it is, a huge amount of money, not if you can afford cameras I suppose.

I suppose a videographer without such funds can find a way around it

Try Adobe Premiere Pro for a few months, and than it is quickly a lot cheaper to buy Davinci Resolve. Not even talking about the fact that Davinci Resolve is a lot more robust, and has a lot more features.

Starting with Davinci Resolve 19 you can actually also get a license for 30,- a month. Good investment if you would just like to try it out,

I didn't mean me, I was thinking of dropping a camera into the DRC or somewhere with a possible hidden Kubrick taking it up and making something interesting.

we are on a L mount forum, so I know that for a lot of population it's a huge amount of money, but for guys speaking about 1000+ $ camera, and same for lenses, no 300$ it's not a lot of money, if you need this kind of software, 300$ is cheap

I've just set it back up again on my new iPhone and tested it here at home, and it works.

I'm currently laid up at home after surgery last week so can't go out shooting at the moment, but will test it out in the field as soon as I can.

Just confirming that the geotag feature worked fine when I tested it out on Sunday (S5II and iPhone 15 Plus running iOS 17.5.1).

However... some images were not tagged and this was because I changed lenses - i.e. turned camera off, swapped the lens, turned camera back on, took photos fairly quickly so the BT connection had not been re-established. I will need to test this some more to work out what the delay is.

Have you any idea / estimation what the impact is on battery life for both of your devices?

I wasn't out taking photos for very long so this might not be too useful. The camera had a fully charged battery and after about 90 minutes of use including switching on/off a number of times for lens changes, and noting that I have power save mode enabled so the camera sleeps if not used after 1 minute (auto LVF/Monitor off) the battery was down by just one bar when I checked this morning.

I didn't check my iPhone battery % but being a 15 Plus, it has very good battery life so I'd not expect too much of a drain on it.

When I go out for a longer day I will try to take some measurements.

One other thing I have just noticed regarding the LUMIX Sync app is that it remains live on the on screen, i.e. the phone does not go to sleep like it does with most other apps if you've not touched the screen for a while. When the camera enters power save mode, the app's icons go dull to indicate no connection. When I wake up the camera up, it take about 10 seconds to re-connect with the iPhone and the icons light back up on the screen to show it has connected.

So I guess depending on where you have the phone, i.e. in your pocket or a bag compartment, you'd need to be careful not to bump the screen and activate another function.

It sounds less favourable the more I learn about it, meaning the screen would need to be on at all times according to you. So it doesn't work running in the background with screen off?

I've kinda gave up on it like others have.

It's a pity you can't use one of those GPS tracker tags instead, I know Apple make BT connected ones.

I've yet to use a camera control app that was really any good. They all suck. The Lumix app is one of the better ones.

I just connected, took a few shots, then turned off the iPhone screen and took a few more shots. The location was saved in the photos with the screen off, so it seems to work ok. While I was looking at the images on my iPhone, I saw the camera screen pop up a message to say it had disconnected from the app. I woke up the iPhone and while wifi was now off, BT was still on. So maybe it will work ok to record GPS data with the screen off.

The app is not as smooth running as I'd like, but certainly not as bad as I thought based on complaints I've seen. The new LUMIX Lab app looks to be faster so hopefully there are better times ahead.

If you were browsing photos on the iPhone, why did you need to wake it up?

That's the crux part of the GPS bit, I'd be even happy if they fixed it in the newer app.

The transfer (albeit wifi 4), remote control and remote streaming are 100% on it so it just needs refinement and it should be 100% if they want all the Labs features including frame.io etc on it to be a fully fledged pleasant (non hate inducing) experience.

It's not completely useless and non functional like the one Pentax had (no surprises there).

The Sony app is tremendous. They struggled with this for years but finally got it right. As long as the app is alive in the background (not on the screen), when you turn on the camera, geotag is alive. I wish LUMIX would work like this; and maybe they will improve it with LUMIX Lab.

Here is the test I did.

Gear and software
Camera : S1R running firmware 2.0
Phone : iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 17.5.1
LUMIX Sync app : version 2.0.12

Setup and basic test
1) Connect camera to LUMIX App with BT only
2) Set camera to geotag
3) Take photo - location is recorded in file

Camera sleep test - all good :)
1) Keep app alive on iPhone
2) Allow camera to sleep
3) Wake camera up - it reconnects to BT after a short time
4) Take photo - location is recorded in file

App in background test - all good :)
1) Put app in background, but interact with phone to keep it awake
2) Don't let camera sleep
3) Camera remains connected
4) Take photo - location is recorded in file

iPhone sleep test - all good :)
1) Put app in background, allow iPhone to sleep (turn off screen)
2) Don't let camera sleep
3) Camera remains connected
4) Take photo - location is recorded in file

iPhone sleep and camera sleep - fail :(
1) Put app in background, allow iPhone to sleep (turn off screen)
2) Allow camera to sleep
3) Wake camera up - it DOES NOT reconnect
4) Take photo - location is not recorded in file

Unfortunately, the last case is actually the most common use case!

As an addendum to the last test case:

Wake phone up after disconnect, but do not navigate to Lumix Sync app. :(
1) Wake camera up
2) Wake iPhone up
3) Leave phone on main menu screen (not Sync app)
4) Camera DOES NOT reconnect
5) Take photo - location is not recorded in file

Wake phone up after disconnect, then navigate to Lumix Sync app :)

4) Camera reconnects after a short delay
5) Take photo - location is recorded in file

I repeated these tests with the S5ii and got the same results.

As a reliable way of geotagging photos, the behaviour above is really not fit for purpose.

Well described! I agree and it needs refined as the methods to get it to work are a pain in the bum and most people just won't bother with such hassle. It work drive you nuts

This behaviour is most likely down to the restrictions iOS places on apps when the device sleeps. In the case where the camera remains awake but the iPhone sleeps you might also find that the app stops responding after a short time since iOS won't allow an app to continue running in the background indefinitely.
