New firmware update S5ii(X)

I know Richard, but they WILL add Lumix Labs (it's on the page in the google Appstore).

So we can expect a firmware update. Supporting 5Ghz Wifi wil than also be included, making this stil a bigger update.

Because I presume they work from one codebase (I used to be a software developer, now an IT-architect), I expect we will get all the goodies. I do presume than that the internal processor is still the same.

But I do expect this update to appear when the S9 news is settled, and they need a new thing to keep them in the news...

Yes sorry i wasn't clear, yes Panasonic has announced Lumix Lab support and yes we can expect there will be a firmware update and potentially other improvements.
I hope Hybrid zoom will come as it's such a cool and useful feature for video (not so much for photo IMO)
I was referring to the 1080P PDAF that we should not just expect it will come to S5II/x.

What would be the sense in that? LoL
Who knows what Panasonic's engineers have done to make it work. It's possible that there's a hardware tweak in the S9. We just don't know.

By the way, Lumix could include the "crop zoom" feature in the next firmware update of the S5ii/x:

I can't even geo-tag phone camera images so problem must be there. I'll keep trying then the geo-tagging should work.
Geotagging is I think the most neglected stepchild of Panasonic.
It has not worked properly since years so I have given up...
Once it actually works, somebody please let us know, and how.

I've just set it back up again on my new iPhone and tested it here at home, and it works.

I'm currently laid up at home after surgery last week so can't go out shooting at the moment, but will test it out in the field as soon as I can.

Hope you’re up and about again soon!

Thanks everyone, recovery has been slower than I had hoped but I will get there eventually.

On a happier note, I just watched the Panasonic GH7 launch and a few of the early review videos and saw that Panasonic have added TRAIN detection to the AF system!!! Z04 Discosmilie

I hope that gets ported over to the S5II in a firmware update!

I saw a lot what I wanted in my S5iiX.

The 32-bit float (with an accessory) is one of them.
But Arri-Log would be another ...

There's also aircraft detection! And for vehicle detection you can now pick if you want the focus to go for the front/driver or just the vehicle in general. I know we've been ridiculously spoiled with firmware updates but Pana, can we please get this backported, too?

No need for it, already works

I find this a joke with the context :p

Pete they obviously follow this forum as we talked about it :D

The motorcycle or helmet is a bit hopeful though when they're doing 200mph, on my local circuit they maybe slow to 25-30 mph on one corner when you'd want AF priority on the helmet and not the bike but it's pretty much the same AF area, is the AF really fast enough? It'll workmon the start line before they take off.

The train AF is weird too, the first carriage or the middle? Car AF, the front or side? The car AF on S5ii just works regardless and I think they are putting too many options into it. Canon AF detection apparently just works out of the box without such AF specifications.

Yes, I agree it's a bit odd Oíche. For train photography you always want the front of the train in focus, well at least I do! If you want the length of the train in focus (and the surrounding landscape) then you stop down, i.e for me with the S5M2 it's a minimum of f8 or up to f11.

Per our discussion about the focus point being displayed in playback, I've found it interesting to see where this lands when I am photographing trains. I generally use 1-area and enlarge it a bit but the focus point is not always on the front of the train because I am taking shots with the train is moving toward me, trying to reframe with the zoom and firing off a burst. The shots are always sharp with the S5M2 whereas with the original S5 I would get some OOF shots.

So maybe with the new train tracking mode the focus point will remain on the front of the moving train, which will make me happy.

But almost more importantly, just having train detection as an option is a personal validation of my favourite genre of photography. :D Perhaps I am not so as much of a weirdo as I might have imagined. Z04 Auslachen

Maybe they mean looking side onto trains but the horizontal AF bar (non detection) would nail that, I use it for landscapes.

Yeah the S5ii really nails focus and I've got so accustomed to it doing so, gone are those Pentax days of getting hardly any keepers or making do with slightly OOF. I had to laugh reading a recent thread post in dpreview where somebody claimed he had a Canon R6 ii but the AF on his Pentax was better, I thought it was a spoof post, maybe it was but they loved him like a demigod for the post. Pathetic Z04 Head Wall

Should do.

I think they just done it for you :p

Note: the free version of Davinci Resolve is very good, but only supports 8-bit footage.

it's not completely true
the free version doesn't support 10 bits for H264/H265, but you can use 10 bits if you use another codec like DNxHR or ProRes, and if you camera doesn't support (like S5II) you can transcode your media with tools like Shutter Encoder

but DaVinci Studio cost only 300$ so if you really need this, it's not an impossible investment

True, and I think the 300,- Euro/Dollar is a very good investment.
Sometimes you can even get the speed editor for about 320,- euro (what I did), and then you get the license fro free with it.
Note that is not the case with the new Color Micropanel! Still a good deal (I might buy it soon), but it is without the license.
