I’m not sure if the 24-105/4 will ever be “much lighter.” The Nikkor 24-120 is only 60 grams lighter than our 24-105. And it does not have OIS (yet more evidence that the most recent generation of IBIS is better at longer focal lengths?).If the 24-105/4 was smaller and much lighter I would never have bought the 28-200 and 24-60. My standard vacation kit now is those 2 lenses and the 16-35. But what if they made a small 24-200/3.5-5.6 OIS @450 grams. With the picture quality of the 24-60 or 16-35 hmm
Of course, it’s got an extra 15mm on the long end. So yeah, maybe a redesigned 24-105/4 could be 100g lighter than the current 24-105/4? Maybe 150g lighter without OIS? Just guessing here.
But, a variable aperture version can indeed be much lighter - again evidencing Nikon’s latest - but then we get into questions about a metal mount, IQ, etc.
