What’s on the Horizon for LUMIX?

But for the A7CR and the other Sony R cameras you need a superb lens to fully exploit the potential of 61mp in order to get everything tack sharp across the entire image. I mean G Master lenses. I guess the Sony G Lenses are good enough too?

The Sigma fp L has the same sensor. I've found that Sigma's i-series lenses are certainly up to the job, with the 35/2 and 65/2 (in particular) being outstanding.

I'm still hoping we'll see that sensor in an S1Rii or S5R.

I guess this is true if you really need to look at everything at 100% and 61Mp. But if you view an image from the A7CR at the same size as one from, say, an S5, unless the image is HUGE, you won't see any difference.

And as to lenses needing to exploit the sensor, yes, but ... all lenses will look better on a higher res sensor. For sure, the best image will be from the sharpest lens on the highest res sensor, but a mediocre lens will perform better on a higher res sensor than it will on a lower res one.

The Sony A7Cii and A7CR fit that bill fairly well - at least in principle. I had an afternoon out yesterday with a friend who has an A7CR. He let me play with it for an hour or two, along with the Sony 20mm f1.8 lens. So, I took a bunch of shots with it, many of which I also replicated with my S1R and also an EM1.3.

My big problem with Sony are the lenses. The compact models are all poor in terms of image quality. The large expensive lenses are amazing. But I don't match the small bodies at all.

I am using the S5 and would like an improved EVF. I have been tempted by the Mark II but that's a lot more to spend on just a better viewfinder. (The video features matter little to me.)

If Sigma add IBIS, a mechanical shutter, and an EVF that's not a monster of an add-on, then I might start to be interested. But they'd also need to improve ergonomics with a second control dial.

You mean the little 24/40/50 primes? I don't follow Sony stuff too much but I got the impression they were decent performers. At least in Sony-land they have the option for small lenses.

I had an S5ii (that I won in a competition), but I found that for the photography I do there was almost nothing it offered over the S5. So, rather than have three Lumix S cameras, I decided to sell it.

The Sony 24, 40 and 50 G Lenses render very well with the 60mpx sensor of the A7CR. And if you don't like Sony you have the Sigma Contemporary excellent 17 f4, 20 f2, 24 f3.5 or f2, 35 f2, 45 f2.8, 50 f2, 65 f2 and 90 f2.8 lenses. Just like in L-mount. And also the apsc lenses from Sony and Sigma.

Im curious also what Samyang gonna bring to the l-mount. They are in the same lvl marketing as Panasonic :p, and there new lens just dropped with 99% of the photography worlds didn't know about it, it seems. But they dropped it only for Sony and didn't mention anything about L-mount. I would love to see some primes like the 135 1.8 or the small 35mm 1.8 they got :)

Not sure what lenses Robin was talking about, but every time I ponder moving to Sony, all I have to do is look at how their 70-300 performs in the Lenstip results. So, while the compact Sony primes may indeed be good, their slower zooms seem to be rather meh. Panasonic seems to take their slower zooms more seriously.

But then I've never seen a good side-by-side comparison (nor does Lenstip test Panny lenses) so I might just be in a state of denial.

To be fair, the latest F2.8 Sony zooms are shockingly light and sharp, but they are also shockingly expensive.

Well, here a comparison video between the Leica Q3 43 and the Sony A7CR with the Sony 40mm f2.5. The conclusion of Alex Barrera, who owns both cameras: "The Leica outperforned the Sony but what wasn" t expected is how close this comparison was... This Sony setup is 98 to 99% the same as a Leica Q3 43 at roughly half the cost". Well, he says also that the build quality, EVF and screen are better in the Leica camera:

98% to 99% of the Leica sounds good to me, but it gets to 200% better than the Leica as soon as you consider that you can take the lens off the A7CR and replace it by probably 100+ native lenses and even more legacy lenses.

However, I'm not sure I could cope with the tiny EVF in the Sony long term. But I might be persuaded.

Actually, that means that the Sony 40mm f2.5 is 98% as good as the Leica/Panasonic 43mm. According to Alex Barrera the 43mm APO Leica Lumix has no chromatic aberration.

And with the Sony you can shoot at lower ISO because of the IBIS.

Lumix should make a A7CR with the 43mm APO lens... ;-)
