News Sigma BF

Starting to get BF user experience videos now:

Finally finished watching it… a couple of things that struck me:

First, felt like he was tap-dancing around the outdoor screen issue; he mentioned it a bit awkwardly and then immediately moved on to the interface.

Second, the interface does look intriguing- I noticed him fumbling with it at times, but he seemed to like it after getting used to it. It does seem like you have to adapt to it, given how minimalist the feedback is (I.e. it seems to expect you to know where you’re at with the mini-screen serving as a brief signpost).

Was it just me, or did he seem to be doing a lot of tapping at the screen expecting a response, and then tapping again?

IIRC, didn’t they specifically mention ‘smartphone shooters who want something more’ in their initial announcement? Or am I conflating that with the first round of commentary on it?
Yes, they mentioned this target group plus the usual photography who wants to habe something different.

I think we have to respect, that some (not all) smartphone users might want to have a better IQ and more influence on the settings, but at the same time they want to have a similar UIX like with their smartphone. Plus the design of a flagship smartphone.

How many Apple IPhone 16 max, Samsung 25 max and Google Pixel 8 Pro etc. have been sold in only one year?

If only 5% of these would be interested in the Sigma BF, this would be a tremendous hit.

Regarding ergonomics with smartphones, Leica had a very good idea, this 300 € grip for the I-phones (only ), the Leica LUX grip:

You have to use it with the Leica LUX app (I don't know the price) and the you get "features with the bokeh effects of our legendary lenses like the Summilux-M or Noctilux-M. With full control over exposure, ISO and shutter speed, as well as the unique Leica Looks" ;)

According to Petapixel, Sigma can make just 9 BF's a day since it takes 7 hours for the CNC machine to mill the casing from a single block of aluminium:
https://petapixel.com/2025/02/25/sigma-can-make-just-nine-bf-cameras-a-day/

So there are never going to be many of them.
I wonder if this is true...
I see them 'normally' in pre-order here in the Netherlands, both in black and silver:

I would expect them in 'special order' if they where that limited...

That's more of an indictment of Petapixel's sloppy research level than of Sigma's manufacturing capacity. I'm highly confident that Sigma has more than nine CNC mills.

I really like the idea of the BF... I picked up a used fp early on and I tried to use it as my main camera, I also use my cameras mainly with older manual M lenses so I have to be able to focus. Which I could not do in bright light with just the FP camera, after a month I broke down and got the LVF and it works fine, yes it's big but it's light and as someone else said easy to use terrible to carry around. But I have had this problem before I have a old Linhof 220, great camera in the hand but no easy way to carry or put it in a bag. I just finally broke down and found a price I could live with for the EVF from map camera in JP on ebay. I must not have been the only one, the next month the price jumped up a 100.00 US. So if you are going to pick up a BF only AF lenses or UWA that you can zone focus, my walk around lens on the FP is the Sigma 24mm f 3.5 and that's the only AF lens I have in L mount. I want a BF because it looks so good, not really a good reason to get one at that price.
Now if you check out the spec's you will see the FB shutter has a new higher speed better than the 1/8000 on the FP. I sent a e-mail to Sigma and asked about the read out speed on the BF, but they will not release that info so I will have to wait until we see some full test's on the BF and see how the rolling shutter effect is. Time will tell.

The expectations are that it is the same sensor as the S5ii(X), so than the Rolling shutter will be about the same. Was for me never a problem (and I do mostly video)

In their initial article on the camera DPReview reckon the readout speed is 1/40 sec:

The BF can shoot at up to 8fps and has a rolling shutter figure of 24.8ms (1/40 sec) strongly suggesting that it's using the same 24MP BSI sensor that we've seen across many cameras over the past few years, and that it's running in 12-bit readout mode. This blunts the overall dynamic range but also means that rolling shutter shouldn't be too pronounced unless your subject is moving quite quickly.

I've also downloaded some of the RAW samples they've posted and tried processing them using Iridient Developer. Since they're DNG files they contain the camera's colour profile as metadata so everything works perfectly and the colour and tonality are excellent, with an overall look very much like my fp L.

Not Safe For Wallet :D

The BF, beautifully-designed though it may be, is missing far too many things I view as essentials for it to be of any interest to me, even if I was on the lookout for a new camera.

It’s so very close to me… the UI intrigues me, and I go crazy for that kind of build quality. If it had an EVF, I’d be very tempted.
