Sigma 45mm 2.8 with...

TOPSHELFJR.

LMF-Patron Gold
Has anybody found any success or great results with the Sigma 45mm 2.8 on either the S5ii or the S9 ?! Interested to hear how the quality is, but more importantly...how well does it connect and talk to the camera, for auto-focus ?! I know they're in the alliance but, I still had doubts lol. Also wondering about the size of that Sigma, in comparison to let's say, the Lumix 50mm 1.8 ?! Sorry if this question is redundant or has been answered, I'm new here and just getting my footing / learning where everything is. Thanks for ya time ! Talk soon.

Sigma lenses on L-Mount are perfectly fine. No disadvantage compared to Lumix lenses. AF is fast and accurate. These are "native" lenses, not what you might used to from.Sigma lenses for other mounts.

The strategy of Sigma FF lenses for L-Mount is different than the Lumix F1.8 lenses or the Leica FFL. Lumix F1.8 lenses are optimized to be used in videography and with a gimbal. Same size, same weight, same filtersize, hardly any focus breathing during video.

The Sigma i-series lenses focus on photography, small size and weight and very good haptic and feel while using them. Metal constructuon, aperture ring etc.

The 45/2.8 was designed to be small and to have a special background blurr. It is not the sharpest lens at F2.8. See my comparison shots with the Pentax limited lenses.

If you want to have sharp and small FFL for the S9, look at the Sigma 24/3.5, 35/2.0, 50/2.0 and 90/2.8.

I bought a Sigma 45mm f2.8 earlier this year. And love it!

I posted a thread showing it mounted on my S5II and a bunch of photos a few months back. Here is a link:

And here it is mounted on my new S9, which I just got today:

I have both lenses. Here is a comparison shot:

  • Panasonic - DC-S9
  • LUMIX S 20-60/F3.5-5.6
  • 20.0 mm
  • ƒ/3.5
  • 1/30 sec
  • Pattern
  • Auto exposure
  • ISO 2000

I got the 45mm with my original S5 pre-order. I thought I'd sell it once Lumix released the 50mm f1.8 but I couldn't. I still have it. It has a different look. It's not the fastest, or the sharpest, but it has really nice bokeh, and really nice contrast. I have a couple of images hanging on my wall that were taken with it. I have the Lumix 50mm f1/8 too, also a very good lens, bit more modern looking, bokeh not quite as smooth but it is faster so can get very shallow. I also like manually focusing with the Lumix. In fact I like the big grippy focus ring on all the Lumix primes.

I use the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 on both my S9 and S5IIx. Love the small size. If going for best sharpness I’ll stop down a little but I like and use f/2.8 as well.

I traded the 45 for the Lumix 50/1.8 and I’m happy I did. I personally only liked the rendering at 2.8, but then it is soft, stopped down very sharp but sterile… anyway I didn’t connect with it and didn’t care that much for the size. Like the color and rendering of the 50 better, and at 1.8 sharper then 45@2.8. 50/1.8 is much bigger, but also less then 300g, and weather resistant.

That's the trade-off for a small lens even if it is slower aperture. It's size versus quality.

For this current trend of old legacy film using LUTs quality doesn't matter so much so the S9 with Sigma 45mm goes with that trend. I'm sure it's good enough though in most cases regardless stopped down or whatever.

S9 with Sigma plus Smallrig mount is available as a kit combo here.

Yes, the Sigma 45mm is a different lens in that Sigma intentionally designed it with uncorrected spherical aberration to get better bokeh. I find mine quite sharp in the centre of the frame when used wide open with soft edges/corners but very sharp across the frame when stopped down. I am not sure if I will keep my Panasonic 50mm f1.8 given they are so close in focal length but despite its size, it is light weight and a great performer.

One of the reviews at DPR convinced me to try the Sigma 45: https://www.dpreview.com/opinion/2810471127/gear-of-the-year-2019-carey-s-choice-sigma-45mm-f2-8

Nice ! Thanks for this. Great to hear about the size / weight / haptic, construction.. Going to check your comparison shots for sure !

Welp, I guess it's settled lol.. Getting the 45mm lol. The crazy thing about this photo is, the 50mm 1.8 still has a lens hood to put on.. Obvs the Sigma does also but, the lens hood on the 50mm 1.8 is no slouch either...making the total setup a little long-ish. Good to see this comparison though !

Hmmmmmmm, making great points here. Good to hear ! I have the 50, but thinking about the 45mm...this is good to consider. thx !

I think you nailed my thinking here, about the trend of old legacy film + using LUTS.. To me, even with making images look older, or have more texture...the 50mm 1.8 has still been VERY sharp lol. I've even turned down the sharpness in camera, on everything. Someone else made a comment about the Sigma just having something, some umph or soul rather.. Those are kinda things I look for. Lens isn't perfect but, for the things I'm going for I think it just might work.
