News LUMIX S Series Camera Lens - 40mm F2 Compact Prime L-Mount Lens - S-S40

I am happy that Panasonic has figured out that the S9 needs smaller pancake type lenses, like the 18-40mm and the 40mm. I purchased the TT 40mm f2 a few weeks back as I had booked myself on a 3 week trip to the Adriatic. I am quite happy with the TT 40mm. I also bought the SG Image 35mm f2.2. I'd like to see wider lenses (I love the PL 15mm MFT lens so perhaps 30mm FF?) and some compact zooms. The Sigma 10-18 is APS-C. I'd like to see a FF version. Same goes for the APS-C Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 .

Yes, a 28mm or 30mm would be good.

The FF equivalent of the 18-50mm f/2.8 is the 28-70mm f/2.8 (by all reports also an excellent lens).

Yes, I know that lens has a good reputation. I have an old Pentax 30mm f/2.8 from the seventies that's pretty good but it's a rare focal length.
 
The Lumix 40mm f/2 lens finally arrived today!!

The size is perfect for use as an EDC combo alongside the S5ii. In addition to being very light.

The first thing I did was set the fn button on the lens barrel (focus area) and set the focus ring to now work as a crop zoom (then I can change the focal length from 40mm to 56mm, just as I have it set because I don't want to lose too much information for photo). Then I took a couple of photos of our cat.

I have checked that everything works perfectly fine. For video too.

It just showed up on Panasonic USA. Expect to ship in 4 days. I ordered the silver one! It has a four year warranty here.
 
I hope they make a 24 or 28 version of this too. Maybe, just maybe, I might forget that the S9 does not have an EVF.

I have the impression that in terms of final image quality both are similar. I am a bit confused. The 40mm is just more convenient as a EDC lens, no doubt about it, and I like the extra button, that I use now to change the subject detection feature. Maybe the 35mm looks more ideal for video because of the field of view and the lack of focus breathing. I guess thet the 40mm has no focus breathing too, but I dud not use it a lot for video yet. I think in the end it is about size and weight. I have the 40mm "glued" to the S5ii and I do much more foto than video with this combo, because I use the 35mm with the S5iix mainly for video work.

Anyway I think both are very good. I just hope that they (Lumix or Sigma, maybe Viltrox) do another pancake or "muffin" lens with a 24, 26 or 28mm focal lenght.

On the Lumix roadmap there is an unknown 20-ish prime in the same “row” as the 40/2. See here
I did have the GR3x for a year, like the 40mm too. Gave more of a challenge but it made me compose better. Exchanged it because I needed the wider view of 28 for pictures in restaurants and tight places with family.

Sold my GR3 recently and will pick up an iPhone 17 Pro this week. I didn’t bring the GR3 enough with me to have it lying around.

I am thinking about selling the GR3 too and getting the Lumix S9... Maybe try it with the Viltrox 28mm f/4.5 until they release a f/2 or f/2.8 Pancake...

Viltrox recently shared some images that show a compact 26mm f/2.8, at least for Sony E mount. They are going at a snail's pace bringing lenses to the L mount so at present I've no idea what will get to us.

I would like to see the Evo series for the L-mount as a photographer I respect and who loves the 35mm focal length has switched to the 35/1.8 Evo as his go-to, choosing it over the Sigma 35/2 and Zeiss 35/2.8 among others, but that's for Sony of course. Sigma produces all it's lenses for E and L from the moment of release and I don't see why Viltrox couldn't do the same.

Yes, that Viltrox 26mm f/2.8 is very interesting, but as you said, if it is not even available for the Sony E Mount, we will have to wait a lot, I am afraid...

For 150 $ could be an option for the S9, but having already the Lumix 40mm f/2 it is not for me.

Does the Lumix 40/2.0 beat the Sigma 45/2.8 in image quality or is on par with the Sigma 35/2.0 or 50/2.0?

I would love to have a small 40mm FFL, but I need an image quality on par with the Sigma i-series 50/2.0 or 35/2.0.
