News Leica Q3 with 43/2.0 lens

If you use a 50mm or tele lens and can still "communicate with them, this is a lot easier...

When you say “at 75mm” I assume you mean by cropping?

yes. The DOF is of course the DOf of a 43/2.0 and the other image from a 28/2.0. With cropping the DOF does not change. But still there is a significant difference in the DOF of a 28mm vs. a 43mm lens.

My guess is that the DOF of the Q3 43 cropped at 75mm has a similar result like inbetween a MFT and an APS-C camera with a 75mm lens.

The Leica Q3 43 just arrived. I have to load the battery first. It is getting dark outside here in Germany. I can do my first shots tomorrow only. I will show then some images here but the main reporting etc. will be posted in the Leica Q Forum. It would not be fair to the members there to write here more then in the Leica Q forum itself Z04 Motzer

You can follow it here: https://leicaqforum.com

So the Q3/43 has a 50mm lens?

The DOF varies proportionately to the subject distance^2 and inversely to the focal length^2. For the same subject distance, doubling the focal length will reduce DOF by 4x. Of course, if you compensate for the shorter focal length/wider lens by moving closer then you will compensate for the increase in DOF from the lens change by reducing the subject distance.

By the look of that screen grab and the relative positioning/size of objects it looks like it's just two crops from both cameras positioned at the same point. So, we'd expect shallower DOF from a 43mm lens compared to a 28mm lens. But it's good to see the actual difference. What has 50mm f2 got to do with it?

No, 43mm. That was a typo. I will correct it. I could one day comparison shots with the Lumix MFT 42,5/1.7 or Leica 42,5/1.2. We will not find an exact replication. But it is good to know in whioch bullpark the DOF will be if the 43mm lens of the Q3 43 is cropped to 75mm.

The DOF itself does not change if you crop the image. It is still the DOF of a 43mm lens. Like if you would do it later in post.

Per comment on your unboxing over on Leica forum Dirk, here is the link to the EU policy on chargers:

Actually, it seems that the EU directive does not ban chargers per se, but its objectives are to reduce the number of surplus chargers in circulation. As such, it DOES mandate:

- Only devices with a USB C charge port can be sold in the EU from Dec 24
- Products must be offered to consumers with the charger unbundled (not included)

The last point doesn't actually say you can't provide another packaging option with the charger included, but it seems most manufacturers are just removing the charger - you either buy the camera/phone/laptop etc with the charger unbundled or you don't buy it at all!

Yes, agreed. If you keep the same subject distance and aperture but change the focal length then you will change the DOF. Cropping makes no difference.

My Xiaomi Poco F6 came with a 90W charger with USB-A socket. This can charge anything with a change of cable or cable adapter.
The last point doesn't actually say you can't provide a charger, but it seems most manufacturers are treating it that way - you either buy it unbundled or you don't buy it at all!
Pixel 8 Pro only had a cable provided. I then bought a wireless charger for it that only phones with that capability can use. Most people are then buying these or more powerful USB power adapters if they don't already own them.

So it's all a bit daft and you should thank Nigel and Boris for helping you escape  :D

I think that EU directive was more a dig at Apple and their lightning cables but I see them for sale everywhere, Home Bargains, Sainsbury's etc. everywhere!

Whilst it's good to have USB-C socket only devices my Poco F6 needs a higher spec USB-C cable to handle the 18A current, others I have default to far slower charging speeds.

In the whole scheme of things it's somewhat farcical. HDMI cables, ethernet cables etc. get superceded. I've had to replace all of them. Routers and all most devices become obsolete. Most cheaper phones are sold with only 2 years of updates etc. etc.

For the Q series there is no devil sitting on my shoulder whispering to me. The usage is to restricted for my kind of photography and the price I should pay for it nothing you can do just for trying!
BUT: if Leica decides one day to release a Q without lens, just offering L-mount connection, I think the devil will be very big and very demanding

The pictures from Dirk comparison with the S9 are saying everything for me: I hoped that the S9 would be exactly the camera I was waiting for, but it is not. The Q9 is exactly this camera, but you can not change the lens…

So I have to wait another year if some company wants my money… OMDS don‘t want to release a new Pen II, also no deal. Maybe DJI?

Oh yes.... There would be more than one devil on my shoulders....

Let's put some oil in the fire....

Side by side with the S9 and Sigma 45/2.8.

I am sure that Sigma would be able to make a similar sized 43/2.0.

Advantage for the Q3: You have on the right side of the body around 0.5mm more space to hold the body. Surprisingly this small difference makes it more comfortable to hold the Q3.

On the other hand, on the back, the solution for the right thumb is a lot better with the S9. With the S9 it sticks out and gives a more secure "grip" Usability over design ;)

Slightly bigger body of the Q3 combined with the thumb rest of the S9 would be the perfect combination.

The prices of an external grip for the Q3 are ridicilous by the way...

If there would be a Q9, I would not need to hide the brand on the body anymore...

Hope dies last. Maybe we will get a kind of S9e (e for EVF) in the future....

As a side note: the aperture ring on all Sigma i-series lenses feel a lot more high quality/ Leica like than the aperture ring of the Leica Q3 43.

Kudos to Sigma.

Hey those Pixel 8 Pro images are great.... My mother now has one

I'm nearly tempted and that's worrying

Say that on Leica forums what happens? They as mad as Pentax?

I had the Pixel 7 Pro before. I think except for the ultrawide lens, the image quality is the same and you save money. But check this first. Maybe I am wrong.

It has to be the Pro model in both cases. The other ones are not that good for photography. Similar to Apple's strategy.

This is why I write it here Teufel Grinsend Schwanz

I am not in other Leice forums. Only in the new Leica Q Forum which I created unplanned last thursday after the announcement of the Q3 43.

But I will bring there a discussion culture like here so even these things can be discussed there. It is all about educating and moderating a community to achieve a friendly and constructive atmosphere within a forum. Daumenhoch
