I hate these stupid instafacegrambook "stories". Dumb idea. But it does seem that there is something going on. What little can be seen of the cameras in use point to them being very S5ii-like.

I think the cameras we can see in the stories are just regular S5II or S5IIX cameras. You can prominently see the camera on a tripod wit Chris Niccolls and I don't think they would show a unreleased camera that way and then also the official Lumix channel would share that story.

That's most certainly only Jordan Drake's S5IIX. He using that camera for the pets pixel channel. I would think they only got the S1RII for testing and maybe got shown the other camera (and maybe a quick hands-on) but will get it later for testing. I think that's about how they have done it with the S5II and S5IIX.

Panasonic seems not to decided to not use the same sensor as the Leica SL3 for the S1RII. It seems Panasonic cancelled what should be originally the S1RII and decided for another sensor. That could also be the reason for the delay:

I saw the video. He says that the second new Lumix camera is able to do something better than the Sony, Canon and Nikon cameras at a much lower price. And it will shake the market and will get more market share for Lumix

Any idea what that could be? Better autofocus in low light with some lidar focusing system integrated to be able to focus in darkness? Or maybe the option to extract raw 16 bit photo files from video frames? Any other ideas?

I am starting to save money for thos summer...

If true, I would guess they have done something clever with the software, possibly introducing support for something like JPEG-XR, which I think supports very efficient methods of lossless compression and HDR/high bit depth image storage.

One of the issues Sony encountered in the A7RIV was the SD storage media wasn't fast enough to keep up with writing the huge files. To solve this, in the A7RV they added dual CF express slots. Solving the problem with faster hardware makes the camera more expensive to produce, and might increase power and cooling requirements. Also CF express cards are expensive so its another added cost for users, along with the cost of faster editing PC's and more storage space.

Makes perfect sense. Given Panasonic's focus on hybrid/video, releasing a 60Mp slow-readout, video-suboptimal camera that mimics the SL3 makes zero sense. My bet is on an IMX-366 based camera, as I suggested earlier in this thread. That would deliver 8k video, 45Mp, and great stills features for genres they are currently weak at like wildlife and sports.

FWIW, there is a recent thread on this exact sensor in the Sony Alpha forum on DPR. Opening post asks "This seems like a good sensor - why are there no cameras using it?" Just starting to read it.

I did find a rumor video that suggest the Sony a7V might use the IMX-366.

I was thinking that maybe the S1Rii is just an upgrade of the S1R with the same 47mpx sensor, but with:

- PDAF
- HHHR shot (47 x 4 = 188mpx)
- LUTs
- 6k video
- more fps
- better ISO
- better DR
- better EVF/LCD screen

... and that 's it!!

and the new sensor goes to the second camera...

Could be! But it needs a new sensor, as far as I'm concerned. Doesn't have to be 60 MP, but the exposure latitude of the new sensors are much better, and I'm not going to buy another body for landscape that can't also handle astro. I'd be very surprised if they did this.

In terms of Astro: I just got back my astro modifed S5(I): the results are great, fantastic low noise even with 3200, and great ha sensitivity. I don‘t need more megapixels with such results…

I think the second camera launched will maybe a more fx3 style body, or box style. Cameras like the s1rII will have more than enough video features for most people, so why bring out a video centric camera with a viewfinder.... People like to rig that cameras and use them to full potential.

I was expecting a some kind cheaper SL3, with some more video functions. I was already thinking, if I really want or need such a camera. Yes the AF of my S1R sucks in some scenarios, but I know when and can deal with it. The S1R is still a great camera with fantastic output.
But if the S1RII will be Highres and Actioncamera in one body, that could force a very expensive decision on my bank account…

Leaving the AF topic aside, the major weak point of the S1R sensor is the crazy noise when taking longer exposure pictures (e.g. 10sec) at ISO 1600 or above. I eben send once my camera to a Panasonic service center and the did the full treatment incl changing the whole sensor unit. But still the noise is really bad. If some is interested I am happy to share a few picture.

An S1Rii with a similar sensor like Nikon has in the Z8/9 would be fantastic.
Perhaps the 2nd camera coming later is then the S1Hii based on the S1Rii but with active fan etc the stuff required for taking 8k videos the whole day long under harsh conditions.

Yes, the 24MP sensor is fantastic for astro, which is why I bought an S5 (and now S1) to compliment my S1R.

Yes, that 47 MP sensor just does not like the combination of long exposures at elevated ISO. It gets REALLY bad if you then attempt to push the exposure in post.
