TT-artisan-75mm F2.0

75mm looks like a nice focal length. Good to have something different to the usual 85mm or 50mm. And nice that we see another manufacturer adding L-Mount lenses.

But personally I'm happy with 85mm.

I also stay with my Lumix 85mm F1.8

Any new lens is good news, especially if it's a bit different from the established normal focal lengths which are already covered. 75mm is an odd one but it looks pretty small, so that's a good thing, and reviews already out there for this lens on Sony are generally very favourable.

The hood, shallow with cut-outs, looks like it's for a wide-angle lens, which is strange.

I think this is a bargain at 180 USD. Even the 230€ price tag is cheap. A very good alternative to enter the L-Mount at bargain prices. This is very good for the L-Mount. We need more of these cheaper options to make it easier for less affluent users to enter the L-Mount.

In general, I like the 75mm focal lenght very much. It is a very good compromise between 50mm and the typical 85/90mm portrait lenses. Not too close, but neither too far away to interact with i.e. models.

In L-Mount we have currently the steps 50mm, 65mm, 85mm and 90mm only. The Sigma 65/2.0 DG DN would be the cosest alternative. Same size, same weight. BUT it costs 699€ (street price) vs. 230€ for the TT Artisan 75/2.0. Of course the Sigma 65 will be optically better. But that is almost 3x the price.

I almost never use my Sigma 65mm because for my use cases, it is too close to the 50mm and for people too "clinical" sharp. I would much a 75mm FFL. 85/90mm is again a step too far in many situations, although I absolutely love my Sigma 90/2.8 DG DN. But a 75mm FFL is more versatile. I would rather take a less "perfect" 75mm than a "perfect" 65mm with me.

Would be great combo with a 28mm FFL or a trinity of 28/2.0, 50/2.0 and 75/2.0.

I think Sigma is the Zeiss nowadays. It is not cheap anymore, but wth almost all lenses bets in class or among best in class. The Sigma i-series is almost perfect and I wonder why some of them did not get the batch "Art". Maybe a marketing decision.

But this leaves space in the entry level price category, which every system needs nowadays to seduce smartphone users. TT Artisan and others can fill the price gaps, which Sigma, Panasonic and Leica do not want to offer.

Leica lenses are so expensive that as far as I'm concerned they might as well not exist. I don't take them into consideration when thinking about which lenses the system has either.

There is the very pricey but sublime Summicron SL 75mm APO that you missed in your steps. L Mount getting nicely filled out with options to suit all pockets it seems.
:)

I try to not think in this price segment to still have a good sleep. Obviously the Leica is on a different level regarding price and size. 4400€, 720g, 73 x 102 mm and 67mm filtersize. Apart from the price is 720g weight a lot to carry around. But it is for sure excellent.

It depends. On a 30 year horizont they are not that expensive anymore. It all depends how many lenses you want to own and for how long you are planning to keep them and what kind of image quality you want to achieve.

But with modern lens design, it becomes more and more difficult to justify very high prices. We are living in a very good time to get a very good compromise in image qualityy price and lens choice. In every system.

It’s enough to make me wonder if I’d use 75mm that much… sounds like a tempting lens.

It is the first time that I see a rear cap that can be used as an USB dock...

The image quality is good enough. Just the AF will be better with some firmware update, right?

I just hope that they release a 40mm f2 AF version. I would buy it without hesitation.
Yep, using the rear cap seems inferior to the more common solution of having a USB-C port in the rear mount itself. Caps get moved around and even lost.

My guess would be that firmware will improve AF later on. This is their first AF L-mount lens after all.

I'm also in the "waiting for an AF 40mm f/2" club. Shame there are no Nikon Z to L adapters.

Yes It is a bit shallow than I expected, but I have seen lens with more “mismatched” lens hood . sometimes manufacturers just reuse the same lens hood to save cost. Viltrox does it a lot recently with their cheaper lenses

Excellent review, Richard! Thank you.

They told me they will try to optimise the autofocus performance.
They have already fixed a few issues I reported so I guess it's very likely they will be able to do that.
But even with the current performance it is still OK for portrait or shooting slow/static scene
Interesting, the AFC (both photo and video mode) performance is better than AFS mode.

re 40/2, maybe drop a comment on the video and suggest that? I know their boss/founder watches my review / people's comments so that may give him some idea
I've suggested pancake lens to them many times, but the more people say that the more likely they will do it.

AFAIK, Tamron (AFAIK) was the first to do that back in DSLR days. They called it Tap-in console but that was sold separately.
There are pros and cons with the USB dock, the disadvantage is definitely that you may lose it.
But the pros are that it would give them more space around the lens mount area, which quite often is where the AF motor/components are. So without the USB connector, it gives them more space/freedom with the design. Having a USB connector on the lens mount also makes it hard to add a weather seal (not that this TTArtisan lens has)
Because of that, some companies move the USB connector to the body (like Yongnuo) but that also creates other problems.
