Things I wish Panasonic would add for stills shooters

I wonder if there's any interest or budget at Panasonic to do any further feature dev for photographers. I guess us posting our dream list satisfies some inner need, but I suspect little else will come of it!

I had a Pentax camera and this was absolutely amazing. Utilized a GPS module that fit on the hotshoe that worked with the IBIS of the camera to operate as a barn door mount. Worked so amazingly well.

Panasonic Lumix could call it the DMW-GPS1
 
From a stills perspective, was a great camera for it's time. Sadly the move to mirrorless left Pentax behind.
 
Another Pentax gem to license is the 'green button'. Its context awareness is so cool! It takes light or wb reading depending on your mode, then gives back manual control. With manual iso it reverts to iso-Auto when pressed. Such a quick and easy option.

I'd seriously consider nearly any brand that cloned Pentax ergonomics, or their joining the L or μ43 supergroups. Things like post-shot raw or crop to any of several ratios are also :cool:
 
I just saw the Sony A7 V introduction and I would not mind twin USB-C ports on the side of the camera to handle both PD-rated charging and USB transferring for the Lumix cameras.

I would like to try the Compressed HQ raw, lossless compressed raw, and the new lightweight raw format aswell. Just to compare...

It seems that Sony wants to divide the hybrid segment into two: hybrid photo oriented (A7V) and hybrid video oriented (FX2).

Compressed RAW option(s) would be great. On a similar note, an option for internal Blackmagic RAW (for both stills & video) would be awesome.

There are a bunch of simple things that Panasonic could offer to improve the life of stills shooters, but there has been very little progress since the S1 was launched. These are some of the things I'd like to see:

- Adding a "LiveTime" feature. This is Bulb mode where the display gives regular peeks of the building image (incl histogram and zebras). It's great not only for knowing that a shot is properly exposed, but also for allowing in-camera dodging & burning (e.g. holding back exposure of the sky).

- Better bracketing options for HDR - today if you want -2, 0, +2 for example you're stuck with shooting five exposures and throwing away the -1 and +1 shots.

- Doing an in-camera HDR that delivers a raw file. Bonus points for some in-camera decision support that examines the DR of the scene and figures out the best set of exposures to make.

- Improved live-view to show the raw file numerical values (a bit like an in-camera rawdigger). Today all we have is the histogram and zebras driven off the JPEG rendering.

- In-camera filters via compositing multiple images (like what OM do with Live ND and Live Grad ND) - and to put the resulting image into a raw file.

- Better focus bracketing/stacking - select a near and a far point and get the camera to work out the best focus increment and number of exposures. Also have the ability to stack in-camera and build a raw file (not the 6K JPEG-only photo mode available in some cameras).

- More variants of hand-held hi res - so a composite technique but where it's not just for hi-res. The obvious use-case is to leave resolution the same but to stack multiple images at high ISO to give lower noise.

- Simple sky tracker using IBIS - as featured on Pentax cameras. It would definitely be useful for astro shooters.

Maybe you can think of more. I somehow doubt we'll ever see any of this though - Panasonic (like everyone else) seems fixated on video and hybrid now.

Yeah the bracketing options for HDR are so limited. I remember my ancient Nikon D50 had about any combination possible, and that was about the first cheap digital DSLR ever made haha

Would love compressed raw for timelapse usage, especially now storage is getting so expensive :)

Yeah that would be great! And that in combination with an RFID reader in the camera, so you can attach tiny RFID chips to your vintage lenses and have them be recognizable by the camera. Great for exif and ibis :)
 
Would also like if you could program the front dial to change iso when using a 'dumb' lens, wasn't able to do this on my S5 till now

I think this will be a standard feature in every camera of every brand in a few years.
 
Ohhh since I managed to properly test my S1RII with the new firmware yesterday I did come up with a new feature that I'd wish cameras had - though I think that feature is probably a bit too out there!
Basically, I'd wish for cameras to be able to incorporate flash information into the Constant Preview feature. I know, that's definitely though since the camera can't know flash placement, modifiers used etc. But I'd kinda think an approximation should be possible based upon, say, taking a test shot and then using that information to compute the constant preview.

I have all my cameras set such that the ISO button puts the camera into ISO changing mode. The dials can then be set as needed, including the front dial to change ISO. This has been a feature for a long time.

Yep, I've programmed the left click on the command dial to turn mono display on/off.
