Panasonic Lumix S1R for sport?

As you can see the S1RII is almost on the level of the S5II. I even had no problems with the S5 w/o phase detection at a football match. El. shutter with 40 fps should be usable, too.

Jumping in on this older post because I’ve been testing the S1R for field hockey lately. The AF is solid in good light, but I’ve found the burst rate at 6 fps AFC can miss quick transitions. Have you tried using the electronic shutter for a speed boost, or was rolling shutter a dealbreaker for you?

Do you really need AFC? If you can get good enough results with AFS, you can switch to AFS and get in return a higher fps. In my experience, the higher fps is more worth than than AFC.

When I started this thread in 2024, I was considering the Lumix S1R Mk1. But I ended up with the Lumix S1 Rii, which was released the year after. I am super happy with the S1Rii for field hockey. Especially with the Sigma Sports 70-200/2.8. The FPS is fast enough, AFS is all I need to catch the right moment and the cropping potential with such high resolution in combination with the high image quality of the Sigma 70-200 is amazing.

The image quality of the 70-200 is better than of the Sigma 100-400. And you are faster with zooming the 70-200 and later cropping than with the 100-400 without later cropping. The AF of the 70-200 is also faster/more accurate than with the 100-400, because it is a sports zoom.
