I think you've hit the nail on the head. I reached the same conclusion after their reviews of the S5II and G9II. There were issues some of the images from those cameras including the test scene shots that were pointed out by some commenters but never explained.I'd hazard a guess incompetence
I actually wanted the 24-70, but not its weight, size and 82mm filter. Therefore bought the 28-70. But as soon as I saw the 24-60 and first samples I knew which one I wantedI have to say I like the look of this lens - relatively small and light but still goes out to 24mm with a constant f/2.8 max aperture. If this had been around when I bought my Sigma 24-70/2.8 then I would have had a very difficult decision.
I think yhe Sony one is smaller and lighter... and this is a plus in portability. I prefer smaller filter thread too.It is interesting to see that the Lumix 24-60/2.8 has a cheaper list price than the Sony 24-50/2.8, although it seems to be optically to perform better than the Sony AND has a wider focal range.
In this list the Sony 24-50mm f2.8 is qualified as "Excellent" for a 61mpx sensor:Reviews compared to those are not favourable for the 24-50.
The 24-50 seems much more compromised compared to the Sigma or Sony 24-70, just from the comparison stuff I’ve seen. Reviews compared to those are not favourable for the 24-50. The opposite even. But yes, it is also much smaller and lighter, and probably works very well on an a7c if you except the compromises.
For the 24-60 the only compromise compared to the pro 24-70 lenses as far as the reviews show is the missing 10mm
But you are right. I guess Sony wanted to go for the smallest and lightest possible, while keeping 24mm.
Panasonic did also do a big shrink, but tried to make the compromise seen from both optical and usability point as little as possible.
And I think that makes this lens unique.
You are completely correct. Some lenses burned down on reviews I liked s lot, and a lot the opposite as well. Luckily we can try out for our selves and send back if needed. That is ocfcourse not true for everyone because different countries different rules. Sometimes I buy 2nd hand as well. If Inlike it, I keep it. Otherwise it won’t be a big loss anyway. Like the 24/1.8 I has last few weeks. You can find reviews to say basically whatever it is you're looking for but as someone who over the years has had/used a number of 24-70 2.8's (Canon RF/EF, Panasonic Pro, Sony GM) the Sig 28-70 2.8 for L mount, Tamron 28-75G2 2.8 E Mount, the little Sony 24-50 2.8 I can only tell it from my own experience. Images are very good and it's just the perfect size on the A7CR. 61mps leaves lots of room to crop to 70mm and beyond. Another reason for me picking it was the 67mm filter thread as I have a good set of magnetic filters in that size and some primes that also are 67mm threads, so great for travel, all adds to small form factors, less weight in that bag. As someone who primarily likes a 50 the fact that that's the starting point of the lens is another big plus for me. I know of a few well known street/documentary style shooters who like the form and function of the lens too. I would imagine this 24-60 from Panasonic will find quite a few swapping out their 24-70's, I think I would if I was primarily an L mount shooter.
