Not with the S1R

It was a beautiful afternoon last Thurs and after a morning of desk work, I decided to load up the camera bag with the S1R and a couple of lenses and head over to a local National Trust property called Packwood House. It has a nice lake with the house in the background and since the wind was light, I took my tripod and ND filter with the intention of some long exposure shots over the lake.

So I got there (about a 35 minute drive), took the gear out of the car, and walked the half mile or so to the opposite side of the lake, and set up the tripod. I carefully put the S1R onto the tripod, took off the body cap and fitted the 14-28. I then turned on the camera and it said ... "No memory card"! No problem I thought, I have some spares in the bag. But I have a new bag that I bought recently (a Three-legged Thing on offer from Wex that I thought would be super useful for Japan) - and of course, I hadn't transferred over the cards!

After 30s of cursing I calmed down and decided to just enjoy the afternoon. But I did take a few shots with my iPhone and I used the Halide app which generates raws on the iPhone 11 Pro (which the base phone OS doesn't support). I was actually quite surprised by the results.... They are processed in LR from the DNGs off the phone.

They really look good. Only if you enlarge them too much, they show their origin. What will be in 5-10 years?

Do not forget, your smartphone does not have a viewfinder... Teufel Grinsend Schwanz

Yes, true.

That's the main reason (plus the lack of decent handling and controls) why I never use my phone to take pictures.

Well, it seems it is not necessary to lug around with heavy load equipment. ;)

Yeah, but we keep telling ourselves that we need the big gear !

"No memory card"
If you remember our conversation about transferring images that is another bonus why I use wifi or if I really have to USB direct.

Even so I've a spare card in Slot 2 and another previous now small 8GB one in my camera bag, that's plenty for a session without video.

About the phone... it's easy to not need a finder as the screens are far bigger than the 3" camera LCD. This one is 6.7".
