New firmware is coming

Since I shoot a first-gen S5, I've pretty much given up on any chance of any firmware update. The optimist in me says it's because there's nothing wrong with the OG S5 that needs updating.

It's been a while since I sold my S5 (just bought another, BTW), but I seem to recall saving images to the SD cards was kinda slow. Would be nice to speed that up. Daumenhoch Smilie

What’s the headline list? Anyone know?

Yes, I think the chances are low. I am guessing that there may not be many more firmware updates for the S5ii/x models now that the S1ii line has been released. Maybe they will provide an update to add the focus ring feature.

Great

S1RII is getting more video modes (7,2k and 8,1k open gate) and HEIF support for pictures as well as the ability to unlock ARRI colour stuff by paying for an upgrade key. Also a new focus mode (Urban Sports, from S1II, S1IIe) and the ability to customize focus ring function on certain lenses. Then there's also a lot of smaller stuff mostly relevant for video like better DJI gimbal integration, better timecode support, more frame aspect ratio options, etc.

At least based on what Pana announced with the S1II presentation.

I think this could be called a real update!
If I remember the new options for Firmware 2.0 for the old S1R, that was only a minimal upgrade! A shame for a 2.0 version ....

Great

Thanks. As a non-video shooter with no interest in sports photography, the only one that seems relevant for me is the focus ring feature. Not sure what I'd use it for though! Maybe for focus? ;)

Thanks. Actually, these are of interest to me:

  • The aspect ratio options are expanded from 10 to 17 and allow up to three frame markers to be displayed simultaneously.
  • The focus stacking function allows images taken at multiple focus positions to be combined into a single image with a large depth of field and consistent sharpness.
I wonder what the new aspect ratios are?

It would be really nice if the focus stacking could deliver a raw file, but I suspect it'll be JPEG. If it does as good a job as Oltmpus/OM do then I'll be very happy.

The option to copy files directly from the internal cards to external SSD sounds also good. Could replace some external hardware on location or on journeys…

Hmm... is that focus stacking feature a new announcement? I don't remember reading about it during the S1II announcement. Wondering if it's in-camera or not.

I understand only in NTSC mode, 24p.

Otherwise 7.1K open gate
Yes

This spanish photographer could record 8k open gate for 47min, which was the battery duración, without overheating warning:

He changed the battery and could record for 56 minutes
