News Lumix S1II & S1IIe live event party

It's also possible that Panasonic don't market the photo capabilities because they usually get smashed by most of the well-known review sites (like PetaPixel and DPR) over what are marginal and minor deficiencies.

But then you will only get attention of videographers, not of photographers. Only s fraction of photographers look at review sites.

Most people go in a shop. They think Lumix is only for 25 year old fancy content creators and not for a 35 year old hobby photographer, who wants to have a camera for family shots of his first kid. From birth until college.

Ok, here is a different view on the Lumix S1II. Very positive, but from the perspective of a photographer, which is important in my view.
......
It is the German youtube channel from Krolop & Gerst. They know what they are taking about, because they are professional photographers and videographers for decades. Not one of these typical young youtubers.
......
First, he finds it very disappointing, that Panasonic tries to market the S1II as a video camera only. They almost artificially try to hide all the great advantages of the S1Ii as a pure photographer's camera, because they do not see growth potential in the photo market, but they see a lot of growth in the "creator" market.

The second point I want to highlight is his view on the S1II and S1RII capabilities regarding AF and image quality just from a perspective of a photographer.
.....

In the aspect of using the Panasonic camera from a photographer standpoint, I find the extensive review of Richard Wong, far more informative.
Even as for using it as a fast "sport" camera in comparison to the other brand camera's from Nikon, Canon, Sony:
(YouTube starting at the proper time for comparison).

No problems as for AF issues to. (Search for AF tracking fast driving wireless model cars in his review).

Specially the many connection possibilities to see "Live View" image by several WiFi connections by tabled / smartphones / PC's.
For really important professional photography productions, working with a complete team, such as models, stylists, "dressers", art direction.
As done e.g. for fashion and advertising photography. As already explained by the extended review of the S1R II.
Shows how well tuned these new camera models are, seen as outstanding professional tools for taking "pictures".
And just "switch" to video-mode, if combined with video to.
E.g. for comparable productions like the following Example:

yes, Richard is doing a great job here. He is also a photographer.

But look at 99% of the youtube reviews out there: 95% of the content is video focused.

This is how you risk that a brand name will be associated only with video and not with photo.

This is ok, if you are Blackmagick design or ARRI. But Panasonic risks with this to loose significant sales among photographers and pushes them to Nikon, Canon and Fuji. Photographers get the impression that Panasonic is not interested in this target group anymore. This is a wrong and very risky signal in their marketing.

In reality, Panasonic needs every single customer, every single sale, no matter from whom.

This has to be better communicated in their marketing.

I go right back to the LX7 with Panasonic cameras. In that whole time, they've been pretty much trashed by the main stream reviewers/sites as photography tools. Yet they're still making hybrid cameras. Panasonic only makes what's profitable. I don't blame them one bit for not playing that game. There's nothing stopping you from taking photos with a hybrid camera.

It is not about making hybrid cameras.

It is about almost hiding in the marketing message and by selection of reviewers that it is a great photo camera at the same time.

It is about marketing, not production.

Some customers you're better off without. I think whiney bitching forumtographers fall firmly into that category.

Take that Gerald dude for example. Panasonic, and the rest of us know full well what happens if he doesn't get his own way. You're better off without that $h!t. I don't hear much whining, crying and bitching from the more professional video shooters. They seem more than happy to pay what's asked for what they know is fantastic bang for their buck. That's the market you want to appeal to.

I'd hazard a guess that the GH series cameras carried more than their own weight in m4/3 world. Panasonic isn't stupid. They'd have to have more than a good idea where their money is coming from, and who to appeal to. I'd also guess that's the formula they're going to follow with their full frame line of cameras. The G9mkII is basically just a spin-off of the GH7. The GX x and xx series seems to have disappeared, and the lower tier bodies left to the likes of the G100, and GX xxx models. I'm not arrogant enough to say whether that's right or wrong. Time will tell.

Take that Gerald dude for example.

I think he is doing a great job. He is calling himself a "nerd" and he loves to do "hairsplitting" and really go into detail to find any faults.

He did that from the very beginning of his youtube channel and all his subscribers are there for exactly that reason. There is a market for this obviously. If you do not like it, do not watch it. ;)

If you do not like it, do not watch it.
I don't. I much prefer going out, taking photos with my inferior camera, learning my camera, and bettering my own skills than watch talking heads trying to create controversy to feather their own nests. Because that's all it is. They're not trying to provide a service out of the goodness of their hearts. They're simply out to make a buck. Just like the camera manufacturers. I really don't understand the mindset of those who hang off their every word.

Oh, and by the way, I'm only here now because I'm killing time waiting for the Wife in a restaurant, while she drinks, eats, talks and catches up with old friends. I'd post a pic (I've taken quite a few) but forum restrictions prevent me from doing so.

. I'm not arrogant enough to say whether that's right or wrong. Time will tell.

You are missing my point. Panasonic is producing hybrid cameras, which is good, because more growth will come from creators than from photographers long term. Nobody is complaining about this.

BUT these are hybrid cameras. Hybrid means video AND photo.

In the marketing efforts I only see video, not photo.

They do not need to change products. Every very good video camera will be also a very good sports photo camera by definition. Both needs the same specs.

They need to talk more about the way how their hybrid cameras also solve the problems of photographers. Simple as that. It is so eas that it is almost embarassing that they oversee this.

"Do good things and talk about it". Very old marketing rule. Still true.

Really? Trashing all his fellow reviewers, just because he didn't get an invite to the S9 launch.
Your idea of doing a good job is obviously quite different to mine.

Watch that video again. Do not try to interprete things into it which have not been there.

Which bit of "I don't" do you not understand? I'll admit to watching bit's and pieces in the past, I no longer bother. It's gotten ridiculous to the point of the tail trying to wag the dog.

I'll just say this. Most of the cameras the reviewers have trashed the hardest, are some of my favourite cameras of all time. My GX8. I still own it. My G9. Still own it. Hell, I even bought 2 of the cameras that swamp that goes by the name DPreview voted as the worst camera of the year. Still own them both. Brilliant little cameras. For me.
Why? Because these reviewers fixate on tiny little details and like Pete says, they get blown out of all proportion.
Incidentally, Sean Robinson from Panasonic, let slip that the G100, the camera that everyone loves to hate, actually sells ridiculously well for them. That's interwebz expert forumtographer knowledge for you hey.
Anyway, the Wife is finished, we're off for a stroll along the river here back to our apartment. Gorgeous evening up here in the Northern hemisphere. A couple of hundred kilometres from the Russian border I think. Just beautiful.
