Lumix 28–200mm f/4–7.1 Sample Images

Sounds like a very nice combo as well! I do mostly tripod work and long exposures, so in my case a fast lens isn't that important. Just want it light and compact since I carry it around all day usually.
 
I gave in, and ordered one today. Bulk version (lenses removed from camera/lens combo boxes) for€ 699, brand new and 5 years warranty. If it’s OK, I sell the 24-105. If not then it goes back. My 24-60 (and 100 macro) can replace the 24-105 anyway.
 
This album on Flickr shows that if you get a good sample, in capable hands and good editing skills, you can get very nice pictures out of this lens with the s5ii
 
I think my copy has severe decentering. First is the left-side of the center, when turned the camera 90 degrees to the right. Same picture taken but then taken 90 degrees to the left, so the right side of the lens. These are 100% crops. After noticing it In casual snaps I did this twice, same result.

If the lens performed like the bottom picture, I would really like it. Maybe I reorder it. I already mailed it back.
 
Mine does not have obvious signs of decentering, although at 170+mm I do need to stop it down a fair amount to keep good pixel-level sharpness. Out of curiosity, what focal length & aperture were you using in the above test shots?
 
This was 200 wide open, through my window on a building at infinity. But this is not about absolute sharpness but about the difference between left and right side of the lens. If it was like the 2nd picture I would be ok with the lens.

But I had taken some snapshots earlier and some of them included a brick wall and noticed the difference immediately. Then I shot a paper 200@f8 at mfd and noticed again sharp in the middle and sharp enough at the right, but softer on the left. Then I took these shots to confirm my suspicions. Twice.

I really like the lens at is concept, but not this sample. I’m contemplating what to do… just order a new one, or go there and try myself at the spot under pressure. Or just let it go.

But the 24-105 is objectively the one with the better image quality of the two, which to me is no surprise. In my view the 28-200 is good enough though, if it was like the 2nd picture for the whole image.

But weight and size vs quality and versatility the 28-200 is the winner and good enough.

Yeah, I will ask for a replacement. It is nice to have a light and versatile lens. With Fuji I had the 18-135/3.5-5.6 for a while. Same range but that one was bigger and heavier, and optically worse.
 
Just one more example... a 100% crop of my 24-60 and 28-200 @ 35mm, should be one of the better part of the focal range of the 28-2000. The 28-200 wide open at F4.5, 24-60 matching the aperture. Guess which is which... the crops are taken from the mid-right, it's not the corner, but right side of the image. This is 24mp, what happens at 44mp, then the difference between center sharpness and the rest of the image would be amplified. 24-60 has the slight disadvantage of having a uv filter from k&f. The lens was send back Friday, so can't do any more test. I'm wondering if I should try another sample...

If I look at image 29/72 from dpreview 28-200 review, I'm wondering if the performance I saw is default for this lens wide open... Never paid that much pixel peeping attention to dpreview :) but it is 35mm and 4.5, same as I used with the dull testshot of my neighbours house. As you can seen in that picture, mostly to the left, the bicycles are very soft. If someone can show pictures taken them self at 35 ( or < 50) wide open... that would be much appreciated. I thought the lens I got was a dud, but now I'm unsure if to get my money back, or have them send another copy.

FWIW, I just tried mine at 35mm f4.5 and the results are as good as it can be.
When purchased, I tested for decentering at all marked focal lengths and found no issues.
You evidently got a "dud", unfortunately.
 
Here's a 35/4.5 test shot from my copy, using the S1RII. The corners are pretty soft, which is what I expect for this lens, at least when wide-open. Focus is on the fence in the center of the image. Lower left and upper right corners (the shrubs) should be same DOF as the focus point, more-or-less. Of course, the S1RII is working the lens pretty hard. But still, given the parameters of the lens, you can't expect it to have sharp corners wide-open.

You should be able to click into the image to SmugMug and download the full-res 16 MB file. If not, and you want to see it, let me know.

@GeorgeHudetz Thank you. Is this wide-open ? I asked for a new lens after I got a mail that stated "we have tested the product and it complies with our DOA-terms". So no charge for the return shipping. They will mail me a new lens. If I don't like that one either I will return it and going to stop finding a good sample. The crops I posted where not even from the corner... but more like half way from the center right at 35mm wide open. If it performs like yours (if this is wide-open) I would be more then fine with it.

Yes, wide-open.

Good luck - it's a nice lens to have for when convenience & weight are most important.

It looks like that your left bottom corner is a bit worse then the top right... And I found he (i) button for the details, yes it is wide open.... and the same af F8 ? :cool:

Yes, that is why I give it a 2nd chance. I'm totally happy with the 24-60. And I think that just bringing that one lens on vacation should actually be enough. Although in my Fuji time I had mostly a 14mm also with me (20mm-ish full frame eqv). If this one is ok, I will bring it with me to my trip to the Vosges, France in 1.5 week as secondary lens.

Yes, I think there is a little de-centering, but not enough to bother me for this lens. I'm confident the corners sharpen up at F8. I'll try another shot tomorrow.
 
I can try that myself tomorrow also if everything goes as planned with delivery.
