... and the Hawthorne Bridge. Note the bridge-keeper's house on top, between the two towers. The entire central span travels up & down (horizontally) to allow tall ships to pass underneath. Another unusual ride in Portland.

Yes, vertically (the central span stays parallel to the water as it travels up & down).

A blue heron shows up at this park every spring and fall... I think it's the same one, based on looks and behavior.

Alas, that's a disadvantage of my fondness for manual lenses... catching birds in flight is very likely to fail. :oops:
 
We've had some sunny mild weather here in the early weeks of winter.
I took the S9 and 20-60mm lens on a walk today and grabbed a few shots of people enjoying the ocean.

Snowy Egret
Was out looking for a Great Blue Heron I had spotted on the previous day, but came across this Snowy Egret instead. Magnificent bird. HUGE feet.

Made some ameture-ish mistakes with the exposure; should have dialed it back a bit to avoid blowing out all those white feathers. I was able to remove most (?) of the color cast that appeared after I had reduced the highlights. White can be tricky if you overexpose even a little, I have learned. Also used C1's new Denoise feature.

I have a large 30x45 print of a small white egret taken in Florida. Does birds are very difficult to expose right for. And I had an analog beginner Nikon F50 at the time! But every time I see shots like these my mind goes back to that vacation in feb 2002

Nice! You did indeed cut your teeth on a difficult subject. For sunsets, I’m used to just backing down the highlights and everything seems fine, even if I know it’s not exactly correct. But those white feathers, man. Also gives me more respect for fashion/runway/product photogs.

And, I think in the first shot, the bird is a touch warm. I’ve since backed down ever so slightly on the white balance and the white feathers seem a little more natural.

False Color should handle this okay (if one remembers to use it).
 
The most embarrassing/frustrating thing about this morning’s session is that, somehow, the ISO got bumped from Auto to 80. And, since I don’t use Constant Preview with AFC (operator’s manual says it slows down AF) I couldn’t tell while shooting, other than the red meter, LOL. First thing I noticed was that the frame rate dropped to like 2 fps, and then the image reviews were black. I was thinking the lens wasn’t fully seated, etc. Wondering WTF was wrong. Then I noticed the meter, then the ISO badge. Doh! I need to use that lock lever. But yes, false colors would have let me know something was wrong there as well.
