Hi from Oslo

My name is Dag. After owning Canons since 1987, I switched over to Lumix S5iiX in October 2024. I did not find a good reason to swap my EOS D5ii (from September 2008, bought 2011) with five EF lenses. Why buy a pricier EOS R and big and expensive RF lenses again. My option was to buy a new mirrorless system anyways, so I changed system: more affordable, smarter, better video specs (although I am mainly a stills photographer), big family of L-mount lenses. Instead I jumped over to a new Lumix hybrid, mirrorless, with excellent optics and brilliant video specs. I have the S 50 and 85mm f/1.8, and hope in the future to invest in either an S 14-28 or two S 14 plus 28mm f/1.8. And what kind of an S1Rii will we see before March 2025?

Hi Dag, welcome to the forum. Welcome to LMF33

what kind of an S1Rii will we see before March 2025?

There has been a lot of speculation and the rumours suggest there will be two new cameras coming but nobody really knows what models they will be.

Greetings! Good to have you here.

What sort of things do you enjoy photographing? Looking forward to pics. :)

Welcome. Norway is certainly an excellent country to live as a photographer, at least if you like landscapes.

Welcome! I love Oslo!

Thank you all of you. Glad you love Oslo, but I have also some unforgettable memories from my past journeys, to for instance: Dublin, Galway along the west-coast, in Ireland, London, small and big cities, Truro (palm trees in the roundabouts !) vacations in Spain, Italy, France, Greece mainland and islands... And convention trips (job travels) to USA, Colorado Springs, LA, Seattle, Boston, Anchorage and far-far west to Homer in the Kenai peninsula. And Frisco and LA and Disneyland in Anaheim. The sweet spots are truly spread all over our globe. My main interest have always been: people, portraits, but also landscapes, street photography, architecture. With my newly acquired S5iiX I also invested in an Atomos Ninja, and have started to learn (steep learning curve indeed) ProRes RAW and editing in FCP on my Mac. I do not have a big database of my Lumix camera yet, but here is a few examples from both paid jobs and photos taken in my leisure time. Fact: Actually, we do not live within the Oslo borders, but about 30km outside downtown Oslo. I am born there but prefer a little bit "countryside-ish" environment. There is 700.000 people living in Oslo, but attract daily workers in a 60-100km circle (or more), counting at least 1,5 million people. Best regards, Dag

I hope that I also can invest in the Lumix S 14-28mm f/4.0-5.6 lens later this year. I am still using my Canon EF lenses with a Sigma adapter, but what I can see (pixel-by-pixel) is that the optical performance is not optimal. With the triplets: S14-28, S50 and S85 I guess I will have optimized Lumix lenses. For me it will be 50% photography and I hope 50% video (movie ?) as well. Thats's where the Lumix products fall naturally into place. Is it possible to post a 10 second movie trailer in the forum ?

Camera: S5iiX with the S85mm f/1.8 and S50mm f/1.8

Paid assignment; portraits (85mm) - at my former job in a bank
where I worked for 15 years, before I was "forced" to early retirement one year ago.
Still good relationships, no hard feelings.

Best regards,

By the way: my signature self-portrait was taken with my own Godox flash equipment, Godox wireless transmitter, controlled by myself via the Lumix Sync app (using Lumix Lab now) with my iPhone. The camera was just a few weeks old and just about everything was new to me. Quite satisfied.

Thank you.
I see you were in Galway and west coast (it is photo landscape heaven), it's a shame I haven't been there since 2016 seeing as I can drive to such places from here in Belfast. I can barely face driving 60 miles nowadays.

Haven't even been to Unesco Giant's Causeway in years either and that's only 60 miles away, I've got to wise up and get out especially after suffering APSC Pentax from 2012-2023... Now have S5ii, 24-105 f4 and 70-300 f4.5-f5.6.

Adapted Pentax K-mount Samyang 14mm f2.8 is still pretty good for astro landscape but don't like the lack of in-camera lens correction and MF... Apparently S5ii (and others) can AF on stars which would be great. The recent L-mount Sigma 14mm f1.4 is truly drool-worthy for wide field astro landscape

Hi Quiche (isn't that a meal, or is it a name ??). We all had a week in Ireland in 2003, spring in May. My parents, my old good father passed away 4 years later, so this was just a great trip for him, a couple, friend of ours and my wife and our first child. We stayed at a B&B just outside of Galway (Spiddal?). I had a Canon PowerShot G3 in these days and made also a video. Great memories. We rented a VW bus and it was just awesome. I needed to fuel som extra energy driving at the "wrong" side on the road. It worked pretty well, but I missed the roundabout after having lunch. (The brain just reset to Norwegian practice where we have right-lane practice). Connemara and Kylemore Abbey. An evening at the nearby pub. Streets of Galway. Wow. The "feel" of the Irish may be somewhat similar to Norwegians. Small country, hard times in the past, working hard. Same mentality.

(isn't that a meal, or is it a name ??)
Oíche is an Irish language word meaning night/nighttime or for me especially "nocturnal" as I enjoy living at night when it is peaceful. Spiddal is an Irish speaking area or used to be anyway. I took a great photo of Kylemore Abbey way back when I was 10 or something in the 1980's, I loved photography way back but never got expensive SLR stuff like my rich cousin did :( and ended up buying loads of them from 2013 or so after I got Pentax DSLR.

I actually did loads of film photography along with digital in Connemara 2016 when I rented a fishing cottage outside Clifden. I love the dark skies there.

and far-far west to Homer in the Kenai peninsula
Not many people get to Homer! Nice place. I was there a few years ago and there was a large bull moose walking down the street. And no one seemed to notice.
The sweet spots are truly spread all over our globe.
I agree, I've been to almost all of those spots.

Sadly I've never been to Norway, so any pictures are truly welcome. I did just see a good film from Norway, it is new for us on Netflix; "Number 24". It is really well done.

About films, FCP does a very good job with ProRes RAW. I find ProRes (not RAW) on the S5IIx, shooting directly to a memory card, is almost always good enough, and I only use ProRes RAW if I expect to do lots of grading in post.

Thank you all of you. Glad you love Oslo
My son is living in Oslo these days which gives my wife and me the opportunity/excuse to go there often. I always take my camera and have got some great shots, both urban, and landscape. Oslo has good access to open spaces even on public transport (like Sognsvann and Maridansvannet) so it’s easy to find excellent landscapes even very close to a big city.
