Greetings from Iowa!

Hi all, I've been posting here for a little while now but haven't yet introduced myself. My name is Timothy, and I'm from Cedar Rapids, IA in the United States. Seems like lots of folks here are in Europe or other continents, and I want to say it's absolutely lovely getting to experience the beauty of other parts of the world through all of your photography.

About a month ago I was finally able to purchase an S5 II on a heavy EDU discount with a bundle deal including the 35 and 85mm f1.8 and the 28-200mm. I was eyeing both the S5 II and the Nikon Z6 III, and ended up going with the Panasonic because body only it was over $1k cheaper and after the lens deals I saved about $2.5k going with Lumix over a similar Nikon kit. Frankly it's just astounding that you can get a camera and lens deal like this brand new for such an affordable price. Hopefully this doesn't indicate anything negative for the health of the system long term but that's another conversation.

Before I had a few year stint on Sony FE as a main system, I used to shoot with a G85, so I feel very comfortable with Panasonic. I quite missed the features and great IBIS and just general polish I felt from Lumix. It feels like I've come home after a long time away :)

I've had a blast shooting with the camera so far. Purchased the primes with the expectation that I would do most of my shooting with them but since the 28-200 came off backorder it's hardly come off my camera! I suppose that's just more of the phase of life I'm in what with having a three year old at home. Hard to find time to switch lenses when he's running circles around you :)

Anyway it's been great to be here so far. Love the community very much and more often than not I've checked the site every day since the DPReview ownership fiasco, with an eye on picking up the S5 II after finances permitted. It's great to be here with all of you, thank you to everyone for being so welcoming and friendly!

Timothy

Hi Timothy! It's a great community here and wonderful to have you with us! Daumenhoch Smilie

Howdy Timothy! Great to have you here. I look forward to seeing more of your images when you have time to share them. Cheers!

Great to hear from another midwesterner! I've been to Cedar Rapids a couple of times when Anime Iowa was in town; my main memories are exploring the skywalk system downtown one night after the main convention sessions ended.

What are your favorite things about the city?

That is a wise decision... I have nothing at all against Nikon, but despite the fact that the Z6III is probably the best mid range (under 3.000€) photo camera (because of the EVF and the semi-stacked sensor), it is not the best hybrid camera and is far from being the best video camera. The camera has problems of flickering and noise in high ISOs for video. If I have time I will do a thread comparing the S5IIx with the Nikon Z6III.

Absolutely! My biggest issue right now is finding time to edit them :)

Part of the reason I was excited about the S5 II was the real time LUT feature. Hopefully I'll find some that let me get a nice image straight out of camera that's ready to share. I do hope that Lumix Lab makes it's way to the S5 II, that would be so handy!

I love that! I'm still getting used the the skywalk system, my office is connected to it so I'm sure it will come in handy when it's cold in the winter time.

I really love Czech village! I have some photos I took down there on the G85 years ago. I'll try to find them if I can remember when I get home. Also love the local state parks and recreation areas, Palisades Kepler and Lake McBride are favorites :)

Yes, I would definitely love to hear more about the differences and see a detailed comparison. On paper the Z6 III seems like the clear winner but in terms of image quality and general polish the Panasonic seems to have a lot fewer issues from what I understand.

I made a quick comparison:

FWIW, the overriding difference for me was ergonomics. When I was looking at the possibility of getting a full-frame digicam, I rented the Z5, S5, and Sigma fp. The Z5's ergonomics were terrible for me; I had to keep making really uncomfortable finger stretches. After a few days of using it, my hand started aching. The S5 was much much better; the controls fell comfortably to hand without stretches. The fp was the one that initially won my heart, though. :) (I am a sucker for miniaturized tech of all kinds, so the smallest FF camera absolutely grabbed my attention.)

From what I remember, it was the heat and not the cold that was the great sheltered element. :)

First time having a play downtown with the Sigma 16-28 after just getting the S5 ii. I'd never had a lens this wide before. Images are all slightly edited SOOC jpegs because user error is very real :)

These were from quite early on with the G85 and the PanaLeica 50mm f1.4 at Czech Village in Cedar Rapids back in 2017. Forgot about the colors on the band playing in the bar. Those were some fun memories.

*Edit* somehow I've already forgotten about the 2x m43 crop. Although a 50mm f1.4 for m43 would have been a sweet lens...
