Can't update firmware for Lumix 50mm f1.8 lens

I received my new S5iiX camera (with Lumix 20-60mm zoom and 50mm f1.8 lenses) yesterday, and everything appears to be working as expected, except the camera won't update the firmware for the 50mm f1.8 lens.

I first updated the camera to the new firmware v2.0 via an SD card. That worked fine. The 20-60mm lens already had firmware v1.1 installed, so it didn't require updating.

The 50mm lens has firmware v1.0 installed, and v1.1 is available on Panasonic's website. As instructed, I put the firmware ".plf" file on the SD card's root level. But when I try to update the firmware for the 50mm lens (via an SD card) I get error "File for firmware update cannot be found." Anyone else seen this?

To troubleshoot the problem, I double & triple checked I'd downloaded the correct v1.1 firmware for the lens (and downloaded it more than once), I reformatted and used multiple SD cards (formatted in-camera) to copy the firmware onto, tried using both of the camera's card slots, power-cycled the camera multiple times, unmounted & remounted the lens ... but still get the same error. The fact that the camera v2.0 firmware update process worked correctly makes me wonder if maybe Panasonic has a corrupted copy of the lens v1.1 firmware on their server? Far-fetched, but weirder things have happened.

I plan to contact Panasonic tech support on Monday, but if anyone has suggestions of other things to try, I'd appreciate it.

Again, the cam & lenses appear to work fine, so I can still use them to shoot with, but it would be good to know what the fix is for the error. Cheers.

Same story for me. Upgraded my S5iiX today (January 27th, 2025) after Lumix released both the 5iiX 2.2 FW and the 50mm 1.1 FW. However, the spec's are type "need to know", as it's described as S-X50. No f-stop mentioned, no "pro" label, just S-X50. Even the camera-stores have no mention of a Lumix "S-X" type of lens. So, then I guess the S-50/f.1.8 will be labelled as a pure "S-50". Need to know. Anyways, the 2.2 camera FW brings to the table incredible new features. BR, ermesjo.

Thank you, Quentinquirelino and pdk42. Now that you guys have given us a crash-course 007 Agent training, we all know better! Remember, I am only a Lumix baby, 3 months old since I got my S5iiX in October 2024 (my 40 years experience with Canon EOS does not count here...). Next thing now is to wait for the S-S50 version 1.1 firmware :) LOL. It's nifty, the Lumix stuff, but all the parameters needs to be digested only by a mouthful at a time ... Daumenhoch

Interestingly, there was an update for the 70-200 lenses (both the f2.8 and the f4). I needed to check the lens barrel to make sure I got the right one.

Also interesting is that there was an update to the 24-105 and since I have that too, I downloaded both the file for that and also the 70-200 one. Whilst the zip files were clearly named according to the lens, the unzipped “plf” files had anonymous names and in fact the two files differed in only a single character.

Question: My S5iiX covers the most from video to stills, with its 24mb pixel sensor. Since you have the S1, do you belive that Lumix will update the S1 to an S1ii in the near future? What is the size of the sensor in the S1 ? Was it released in 2019 ?

The S1 (and S1H) has essentially the same sensor as the S5 - a variant of the Sony IMX 410 24Mp FF sensor. It's a very good 24Mp device, with perhaps its only weakness being relatively slow readout speed. The S5ii uses essentially the same sensor as well, but with PDAF added.

The S1R has a Panasonic-developed 47Mp sensor. It's also a very good sensor, but it's not as good at low light as the one in the S1/S5.

There's a lot of speculation about the S1ii - I think it'll either arrive over the next month or two, or it'll never come and it'll be a dead product line. It's hard to call which of these will happen!
