Test/ First Impression 7Artisans 10mm f/2.8 Mark 2 Fisheye

As it is so inexpensive, and as it’s been getting such good reviews from reliable sources, I thought I’d try the new mark 2 version of 7Artisans 10mm f/2.8 fisheye lens. It’s solidly built and quite hefty, weighing in at over 600g, but it balances reasonably well on the S5II. It is a fully manual lens, and although fisheye lenses are often said to need little in the way of focusing, with the combination of f/2.8 and a minimum focusing distance of 15cm from the focus plane, which translates to about 4.5cm from the end of the lens, close-up photography needs some concentration! The focus ring and the aperture ring are nicely damped; the only negative is that the aperture ring only turns smoothly, with no clicks.

At very close focus distances the field of curvature is extremAe (see snaps below) but at greater distances there is no problem, especially when stopped down.

I haven’t had the opportunity yet to do any serious shooting, but I’ve attached a few shots to give an impression of what this lens can do. These shots are either at f/2.8 or at f/11. It should be obvious which is which!

Finally, a brick-wall shot! This is from minimum focus distance, showing the huge curvature of field at this distance.

That looks like a fun lens to me! Earlier this week I was thinking about it :) But I must first use the stuff I have more

Heh. The one indulgence I bought from my tax refund was the TTArtisans fisheye Paul uses… supposed to arrive today, coincidentally. Looking forward to being able to compare and contrast!
