40mm lens options

Until very recently witht he release of the TTArtisan 40mm f/2 AF, native 40mm options were limited to the Sigma f/1.4, a DSLR lens made available essentially with a built-in adapter or a quick transition to L-mount. That lens is reputedly excellent but it's also very big and pretty expensive.

In the last eighteen months or so I have bought a total of four 40mm lenses and find them to generally be a useful focal length and pretty compact, though none are very fast. Two are old manual focus SLR lenses (Konica and Pentax), one is a newer autofocus design (Canon) and the last is native to L-mount (and other mirrorless mounts), the TTArtisan 40mm f/2 AF.

I lined them up yesterday for a shoot for size comparison purposes more than anything. Firstly on their own, no hoods, no front caps and each with a standard rear cap (though I use K-mount rear caps for the Konica lenses as AR-mount rear caps are apparently not made at all and are therefore limited to originals).

And secondly all adapted to L-mount to show the size of them with an adapter where needed.

The Pentax is certainly the most compact but it's also the joint slowest (with the Canon) and probably has the worst overall image quality.

The best performing of these is probably the native TTArtisan one, though the Canon has shown to be very capable and about the same size (with adapter) as the TTArtisan, albeit a stop slower. The Canon plus Commlite adpater is probably also the most expensive if you buy the adapter new. I bought mine used but still the total was about the same as the TTArtisan new.

I no longer own my copy of the Canon 40mm pancake lens. I loved using it with my (no longer owned) Blackmagic “Production Camera 4K”. That camera had a APS-C size sensor. This 4K video was shot using that combination:

The da hd/xs/limited 40 manages to cover 36x24 area, whether it's the same optical formULA as the snc-m I don't know. I let mine go, but still have the 70/2.4 and adapters for L and μ43.

And given the choices at 35+40, I chose the Meike f/2, of which I found an open-box copy. Plenty decent enough, plus it has a rubber seal at the mount. I'd trust the 20-60mm more for foul weather shots but it sure won't hurt.

40mm is my ideal focal length, and while I'm intrigued by the new TT Artisan 40/2 I'm especially interested in the Konica 40/1.8. I've been eBay lurking for a good copy but nothing has moved me to "buy now" just yet, but I will at some point. The Konica range has me intrigued in general.

Although not listed, I find myself interested in the Pentax 43/1.9 Limited as well ... the entire limited series has a look that I love.

I have the 43mm and 77mm. They are really good. Very nice images. I like the rendering and the sharpness.

when adapters got to be real cheap, the Konica 40 was extremely popular and revived then, too (that created overhype/legend twice in one lifetime). The 35mm f2 EE ar mount was too expensive and scarce plus it clouded an excellent 35mm f2.8 as being second, personally speaking I'd have this 35 2.8 Konica over a 40 which I have and I even have parts for. I'm partial and a Konica fan though, the modern company built its reputation around the 35mm focal length as it's flagship where other manufactures based around 50mm length as standard. I see things the same way, 35mm is normal to me and 50mm is narrow

For me, 40-43mm is normal.
35mm is too wide, and 50mm too narrow. Both of them render un-natural compression.
