Video monitors, screens and things

Honestly, no more desk for me ever, I don't even bother with the lounge TV and Mac Mini either as this is inconvenient compared to the phone. Every photo I posted here is edited on the phone.

It has obsoleted the M1 Mac Mini I bought for photo editing. I only use that now as a music server for my hifi but I don't really need that either as I have a drive plugged into my SACD network player.

5 years ago I would have been Z04 Kaputtlachen at me saying this.

Might be enough for photo editing, depending on your needs, but I don't see myself editing a whole video on a phone (or a Ipad).
And yeah I know Davinci Resolve is available for the Ipad...

About the LG OLED TVs, if you have put together a video, say with DaVinci Resolve, what is the best way to view it on that TV?

Here is how I do it. You can play the videos via the USB input on the TV. First output (Deliver) the video from Resolve with H.265 Master. This format plays on LG TVs. If the video is HDR choose MAIN10 as the encoding profile. Then transfer the video file to a USB storage device that can be attached to the TV. I use an old Samsung T5 SSD for this. And I have various folders on the SSD, for different cameras and other topics. Then attach this SSD to the TV, select it as an input device, and it will bring up a menu so you can select and play any video on the SSD. Relax and enjoy the video.
This what I'm going to try first:

And yeah, I know how to configure Davinci for Rec709 and Rec2020. I didn't have a valid Dolby Vision Screen (even that our Philips TV officially supports it), So that will be new but will surely find a YT video for configurating that too.... @CharlesH I know this is not 'properly' calabrated than, but for now more than Enough. I'm not going to make the next Dune or Avatar anywayZ04 Kaputtlachen

Talking about these movies, it is fun to see how a different approach both colorists of the movies have, a saw presentations of these both at the BMD Davinci Resolve conference in Amsterdam.

Avatar 2: Less is More, I do mostly everything in a scene in 1 node.
Dune 1 and 2: Mah about 50 nodes a scene, and lets print the final grade to film and scan that again, will look more filmic. Aya you know what, let us film some scenes (Giedi Prime, The home city of the Harkonnen) both in infrared and normally, and combine these in post.

I found Avatar much too much digitally looking, so I know which colorist I prefer...

On a phone probably not ideal, no reason not to on a tablet but I only take clips but you could easily colour grade or do simpler stuff on a phone. I've only changed to monochrome using LR so far.

But you can output from the phone to a bigger monitor and use a wireless keyboard/mouse if you can do this in LR mobile or similar.

This 12GB/512GB phone has similar processing power to my M1 Mac mini but more RAM and storage and it's instantaneous processing RAWs... It has the power for video editing, just the small screen and for example, LR is limited but there is no reason for it regarding grunt capability.

AND... If you don't have the processing power the S5ii does proxies for people with say an older Intel chip Mac... Dinosaur things nowadays

I have the speed editor, which I know can also be connected to the Ipad. I will buy the new Micro Panel in the future, which even has a spot to put the I-Pad in.

However I edit for hours at a time, prefer that behind my desk.

I do create now after the last S5iiX update proxies automaticly, but only need them in certain Multicam situations and Prores 5.8K HQ.
Normal Prores 5.8K and 4K 422 can be handled fine on my AMD gamer laptop, thank you.
And before you say, yeah but you have a RTX3070: unfortunately the graphics card does not decode 10-bit 422 footage, only 420.
If I had known this before I might have bought an Intel processor chip, they have hardware decoding for all formats.

Intel? Do the Apple Silicon chips not have this built in or the Android Snapdragon latest?

3070 is for running Crysis :p I like the power effeciency of the M1 or later and the complete silence, I spent years trying to get a proper silent PC, Noctua/Bequiet fans and power supplies, custom GPU fan on GTX 1060 etc etc. then M1 Mini killed that and did the silent business.... Now mostly surpassed by this phone .

Fan noise ... Prehistoric stuff

For gaming I bought an Xbox Series X, played Quake 2 (1997) on it and haven't used it since last year. But anything but a PC, I hate them, always built my own and for others but stopped all that... History

I'm very interested in Snapdragon, but I wait for the second or third generation and in a desktop format, my laptop is good enough for now.

And I'm truelly a Apple Hater, the only good thing is when they are with red cabbage, potatoes and meat in the oven Z04 Flucht ...

And what do the Pro's use for movies.....

Linux or Windows But yeah their machines have stronger specs than a small-country Supercomputer...

Honestly I understand the charm of the M1/2/3/4... If it wouldn't have been an Apple...

But yeah, ARM like the snapdragon for in the future...

The topic of computers & tech is funny. I'm a big believer in user preference: Whatever you prefer, use it. For almost a million years, I continue to use both Mac & Windows. :) I started using Mac in December 1983, a month before Apple announced it. I have both a 16GB M1 Mac laptop & a 32GB Intel Windows 10 PC on my desk, and many, many TBs of disk storage for use with both computers. I previously used the PC for video editing, before I got the M1 Mac a few years ago. I have zero interest in upgrading to Win 11 (my PC hardware can't run Win 11 anyway, so it's a moot point). My Mac is much faster than my PC, and obviously portable, so for now the Mac is now my "main" machine. Obviously a M1 Mac isn't as fast as newer, more powerful hardware, but I don't work under tight deadlines anymore. No crashes or hangs on either machine. Both computers run Davinci Resolve Studio editing 6K video no problem. I run Affinity Photo 2 & Pixelmator Pro on the Mac. I haven't used Adobe software in decades. I edited in Final Cut Pro before DRS, but dropped FCP when Apple "upgraded" it after version 7. I have zero interest in video games; real life is stimulating enough for me. My iPhone is an antique; it'll be replaced this year by a newer model (but not the latest model), and I doubt I'll ever edit video using a phone. With all my tech tools (with all my tools, really) I keep & use & repair them for as long as possible until they wear out or no longer can produce useful results. And then they get recycled & replaced, one way or another. Onward!

Just to add: I use an old Samsung LCD TV as the main, external monitor for my Mac. I find it useful to occasionally switch to watching broadcast TV programs on it as a way to "calibrate" my eyes (compare my own video to public broadcast video) -- on the same screen. Sometimes I prefer how the broadcast looks, sometimes I prefer my video. Sort of like occasionally listening to a music mix on a crappy car stereo vs. studio monitor speakers.

Ooo yeah, actually I stay even more clear from Adobe... Also use Affinity and Davinci Resolve.

In another note: sometimes I use other software like Unreal or Space Engine for some virtual scenes, thats why I also NEED Windows.

Cheesy example of Unreal engine combined with green screen stuf filmed with my S5 (subtitles in English):

Unreal & Space Engine example (sorry only in dutch)

Same here. I don't have much patience for brand prejudices. I just upgraded to Windows 11 on my PC laptop and it is very nice, but not powerful enough for Resolve. I would love to see a good ARM based PC laptop, lightweight and with good battery life, probably Windows ARM, that can run Resolve. In the meantime my M1 MacBook Pro takes everything video I throw at it with Resolve so I'm happy right now. :)
