Sling bags?

Nomad Nate

Active Member
Looking at getting a sling bag for my s5ii 24-105 and maybe a 50 1.8 when I get one. My thought was it would be nice to have something standalone to take out on a photo walk or whenever I feel I might want to snap some photos that isn't a full-blown backpack (which I already have a laptop backpack I use with a camera cube. I was thinking of a sling, because it would be nice for being able to access my camera readily without digging into a backpack.

I am mainly looking at the mckinnon / nomatic 8l sling not that I'm a huge mckinnon fan or anything (I am pretty neutral on him), but I liked the idea of all of the little features he put into it like the lid turning into a little "shelf" type thing so you can rest lenses when changing them and the little elastic band so that you can quickly temporarily shut the lid without fully zipping it. I also like that it seems pretty protective so that when I'm flying, I can toss the whole thing inside a roller carry-on and it would have that extra layer of protection when traveling.

Just curious what your guys' experience has been or what you'd recommend to fill a similar role.

It's not a bag per se, but I've been using one of the quick-draw Sport slings from BlackRapid for years. When I carry one, I'll tuck a second lens in some sort of fanny pack or belt pack on my off-side, opposite the slinged (slung?) camera.

Worx 4 me, YMMV, HTH.

I have always used a shoulder bag but I have just ordered a sling - the WANDRD ROGUE 9L Sling. It's due to arrive early next week.

It should be big enough to take the S5M2 with a lens mounted, and two more lenses. I am hoping it will be more comfortable and just a bit more compact than my current shoulder bag which is a ThinkTank Retrospective 7 v2.

Thanks for the reply - yeah I have been looking at some of the others out there too like the wandrd. You'll have to let me know how you like it.

re: The Rigger - yeah, I do have a peak design sling strap which is great - but wanted a sling bag to be a bit more discrete or to have the option to put the camera somewhere safe where the lens cap isn't going to pop off (which happens a lot to me on the 24-105). Where I live usually is very safe and very low crime, but still I'd like not to draw attention to the fact that I'm carrying a camera if I'm wanting to get in somewhere and take candid photos to capture the local culture and life.

I bought a cheapo K&F Concept slingback for me last year, I paid about €30 for it last year but it worked well for me:

Light, versatile and a great why i might like a sling bag, and what I would love to have if I would buy a more expensive bag.

But it works so good for me that for now I won't buy another yet...

I bought this one a Lowepro Sligshot 202 AW on the 2nd hand market for like 25 euro's. I guess there must be something like that in your place too. It is small light and not full blown. I use it with 2 lensen :) 24-105 and 50/1.8 and has a bit storage for food and drinks. It even got a splash proof cover in the bottom.

Looks like the same I'm using
I tried an k&f from amazon (a bigger one, much more expensive), but the bottom was thin like a sheet of cardboard and no waterproofing. I was too afraid to put my expensive lenses in there. Also on the bottom compartement of the 202AW I've put an extra layer of soft insets, so maybe that is just me :)

The K&F I disliked for the money is this one

This German brand of photo bags offers very high quality but at a very high price. It's kind of like the Leica of camera bags:

Here a review of one of them:

I think the translatipon of "Ober werth" into english is something like: "Absolutely worth it"

I thought that the translation was "over priced" Z04 Kaputtlachen

Crikey - they make Billingham bags look cheap !!

I admit, most of the bags I've seen on this thread seem like way overkill compared to what Nate seemed to want at the start of the thread - a clean, fast and light bag? (I admit being biased towards that sort of bag, just as I'm biased towards that sort of camera.)

I like Tamrac bags a lot, but mine are the older style with cordura nylon and suede handles; they don't seem to make them any more, unfortunately. :( (Cordura has been very waterproof for me, which endears it to me.) Something like the Apache 4.2 looks closest to what I have in their current line.

Hi Nate,
My Wandrd Rogue 9L sling arrived today. Z04 Discosmilie

In terms of size, it's quite compact. I was expecting to be able to fit the S5II with a lens mounted and two other lenses in the bag all packed vertically as shown in the photos on the Wandrd website. But that won't work for the lenses I want to pack - the Lumix 14-28mm, 24-105mm and 70-300mm. While it's technically possible, the only way it can be done is if the 14-28mm is mounted on the camera. When one of the other lenses are mounted on the S5II, the combination is too high to pack vertically in the bag making it impossible to close the top flap.

I've been going out with these three lenses for a few years in my current ThinkTank Retrospective 7 v2 shoulder bag however it is heavy and a bit bulky. And to be honest, I rarely use 14-28mm lens when out doing rail photography so I've been thinking recently (encouraged by James Popsys videos) that I should downsize what I take out unless I have a very good reason to take it.

So I removed one of the internal dividers and packed the S5II horizontally with one of the zoom lenses mounted and the other packed vertically. This works neatly and is a nicer weight to carry. The photos below shown this config.

I found the Wandrd Rogue comfortable to wear around the house when packed up but I need to go out for a whole day to be sure. But the size is good and it feels sturdy. I really like the extendable pocket at the bottom which can be used for a drink bottle or a wind jacket or tripod but when folded away is not visible.

One thing that a few reviews mentioned is that the top flap has only one zip tag so you can't zip it open/closed from either end. That is a minor downside.

Another minor thing - one of the Nomatic reviews I saw mentioned the lighter coloured interior materials of the Nomatic makes seeing items inside the bag much easier. The all back interior of the Wandrd Rogue does make it difficult to see items given that most camera gear and batteries are black.

Anyway, this is a keeper and I am looking forward to going out with it.

My main camera bag has been a medium-sized sling from Lowepro for a few years now, mostly because I had kids. That may sound strange but travel can be more hectic now so lens changes must be done on the fly without the need to remove, unzip and then replace a backpack. A sling bag needs to weigh less than a backpack because all the weight is on one shoulder so, while I've considered a larger one, I've enever bought one because I know if I had the space I'd fill it and then it would be too heavy.
