I noticed that when formatting CFExpress cards (not sure about SD), the camera now has a "low-level" checkbox. I looked it up in the manual, and they recommend doing an in-camera low-level format on new CFE cards, and also when you notice a decrease in write performance.
Well, I've been using a SanDisk CFExpress card that I bought when I acquired my S1R 4-5 years ago, and it has seen a lot of use. With that card, I'd been testing the time required to clear the buffer on the S1RII when shooting at 40 fps. My first tests were done before I did a low-level format, and I got 24 seconds to clear the buffer for raw-only shooting, and 37 seconds for raw+fine JPEG.
After a low-level format, those times decreased to 17/24 seconds. So a low-level can really help the write-performance on the S1RII. I'm not sure how often it needs to be done to maintain peak performance, but it's good to know it's there.
