Rumors New lenses from Sigma coming soon

I’m happy to see these, but then I’m an avid astro photographer and also covet such lenses for their ability to provide incredible pixel-level detail along with significant subject isolation, which can be hard to do when you are shooting at a wide angle.

I do think we have a good selection of lighter, slower primes however. Between Sigma and Panasonic we have 17, 18, 20, 24, 35, 50, 65, 90, & 100mm. Given that, I’m happy to see Sigma flush out it’s “prestige” lineup as Panasonic has seemed to abandon the high end altogether, and Sigma’s I-series is quite well developed. If anything, it’s the fast primes that have been recently neglected in L-mount-land.

But yes, I would like to see a small/light 14mm or 12mm prime, and likewise there is a need for a small 28mm as well.

I would add a small (as much as possible) 135mm or thereabouts.

If Viltrox bring their lineup to the L-mount now that they're a member then we would get the 14mm f/4 Air lens which is reputedly very good and a real bargain.

The 28mm situation is really weird. Sigma could produce a 28mm in their Contemporary line but... they just don't. Panasonic have made one of the best "small" 28mm lenses - it's the one inside the Leica Q3. So again, they have the knowledge, they probably have a patented design they could just adapt for L mount... and they just don't. Leica is going to do Leica things and the third parties all seem reluctant to jump into the 28mm pool.

Maybe there is some grand strategy behind all that, but to be honest, I don't get it.

VILTROX has the really (really) small 28mm pancake lens. I have the Sony version, and had hoped they would bring it over to L-mount. It would be a good walk around lens. It's no Leica Q3 lens, but very nice for general photography.

The 28mm f/4.5 is one of the lenses that Viltrox have said will be the first to come to L-mount but it's hardly a general-use wide-angle - the fixed f/4.5 aperture and lack of manual focusing option mean it's not really good for anything. Too slow for low light or shallow depth of field, too fast for landscapes or cityscapes.

Well, why, it is quite suitable for architecture and landscape with reservations, but there is no depth of field. They have a more interesting 28/1.8.

Those reservations are the problem. Yes, I think the 28/1.8 would be a far better option though it's not very small.

Interestingly, I have read that 28mm is kind of a “special” focal length within Sigma, based on their history. So it is odd that they don’t have a modern version - either in Art or the i lineup. I have their older 28/1.4 DG HSM Art, and it a fantastic lens, but it’s huge.
