It's not like he got the original, anyway. From the NBCNews article posted above:

Because it was always an ironic statement about art as commodity.

I wrote a brief response to the hullaballoo concerning a duct-taped banana. Naive knee-jerk responses have been anticipated by both artist and buyer, both aware of their roles in this game of post-symbolic trade.

As was my comment comparing a banana and a piece of duct tape to one of the most famous paintings in the National Gallery.

My personal feelings are very much in line with those of Jayneboo earlier in the thread.

Art is one of the things that is highly subjective. Or even totally so. So different things appeal to different people. Engineering types will find very different things artistic than those with a more artistic bent. That doesn't make either side right or wrong. We're all just different. Personally, I'd say that the banana taped to the wall is crap, along with the beer can. But that's just me. My opinion. And we all know what opinions are similar to lol lol lol. I do suspect that quite a bit of modern art is just rebellion against the system. Breaking the norms, eliciting a reaction. Which is what art is designed to do anyway. Just a bit of a different reaction
