MEIKE 50mm F1.8 Autofocus

Nevyn72

LMF-Patron Gold
As far as I know Meike are not officially a member of the alliance:

Given the Lumix 50mm f1.8 is basically good enough to receive a Leica summicron badge I’m not sure this would tempt me.

I have the 35mm F1.8, the 50mm F1.8 and the 85mm F1.8 from Lumix.... Very happy with them, I'm also not considering this lens.
But if the S9 becomes cheaper and for more users, it might be an option for them. The S9 is also not weather sealed so they won't use them in extreme weather anyway.

I understand you can now pre-order the lens:

And only Eur. 156,- including free shipping, and I understand 20 euro discount on the first order.
I'm not going to buy this lens, I prefer my Lumix 50mm f1.8, but what a bargain. I might be interested when they start to sell other focal lenghts...

I can see myself buying a copy of this at some point in the future, depending on reviews, though it would be my third native 50mm.

I think a proper cheap nifty fifty is something sorely missing from the L-mount system, I can see this lens bringing new people in as the price of the cheapest 50mm is high compared to other mounts such as RF or E.

I expect the S9 will also drop to 999,- early next year, when all the initial buyers already have one. It might be a bit front heavy but than you have a much nicer kit than the new vlogging-camera Sony ZV-E10 II from Sony (FF vs APSC), and I do understand the lens is quite sharp on the other mounts...

Possible, in Wex UK they mostly have S9 lens & Smallrig combos in stock but body only is sold out/less available and they don't separate them.

This possibly suggests buyers are previous Lumix owners are buying (like Pete) more than new comers but who really knows?

S5ii is now £1350 and 1/2 price of Nikon Z6 iii and you don't want this camera for raising shadows.

It'll be interesting to see how the global economy and stock market trend goes affecting luxury goods... I've seen it before and the same talk.... No downtrend... This time it's different... You can't lose... Keep buying as AI is the new industrial revolution... It will always keep going up... Prices will never come down.

As this is archived I'll come back to this thread in some time

I would be intrigued to see this lens pitted again the Lumix S 50mm f1.8 as looking towards a potential Nifty Fifty.
The Lumix can be found between 280-350 EUR around in here in the second-hand market, not as cheap as the Meike but making it a reasonable question to ask oneself (imho).

I'm tempted to get this but it would be my third native 50mm (plus the EF 50/1.8 I can adapt) so it really doesn't make any sense. Has there been any indication that Meike will bring their 85/1.8 to L-mount?

Not in 1.8, but in 1.4 yes!

Their website lists only Z and E mounts and I'd much rather have their 1.8 than the 1.4 due to cost, not to mention the reported AF problems of the 1.4. It would seem logical to make an L-mount version of any lens that's FF and with the hardware developed, since they clearly are able to even if not technically part of the L-mount group.

I understand that @Richard Wong has the 85mm 1.4 for testing. So he can tell more.
For the rest... We will see in the future. I already have the 35/50/85mm F1.8 from Lumix, so I at least won't buy any of these Meike lenses.

3 lenses will be officially released soon from Meike for the L mount:
50 1.8, 85 1.8, 85 1.4
The two 1.8 are quite affordable.

Thanks Richard. I may well pick up that 85/1.8 for a faster alternative to my Sigma 90/2.8.

@Richard Wong has released his very interesting review;

Lens is not for me, but found it a very interesting watch. Thank you @Richard Wong

Just watched, thanks for the heads up JoJo. Nice video @Richard Wong ! Very thorough review, I watched the whole thing. For $170 that lens is not bad ! I kind of like that it reads a little warmer in some images, I tend to push things that direction anyway. All of the other things I could work around for sure.
