Lumix S1Rii custom settings C1/C2 & Q menu settings

I changed the layout and buttons for my Q menu buttons the way I use it most. I was in manual mode when I did that.

After that I created 2 different custom settings for C1 and C2.

But when I change on the knob from manual to C1 or C2 and then click on the Q menu button, the standard setting of the Q menu appears instead of my individual Q menu as shown above.

How can I achieve, that my individual Q menu appears also when I am in C1 or C2 mode?

It seems that there is a FW bug.

When I am in C1 and rearrange the Q.menu, i.e. set to "mode2", it does not show that change when I press the Q knob within C1. When you turn off and then turn on the canera, switch to C1 and press the Q knob, it is resetted to the factory standard.

Same if I choose different options for that C1 Q knob. It resets it after turning off the camera

I have body FW version 1.0 on my S1Rii

This is how it should work: For each C1/C2/C3 mode you can predefine your own, individual q menu settings. Here is a video about it:



Does not work with my S1RII. Can anybody confirm this bug or did I miss here something?

This is not a bug Dirk. It's the way LUMIX cameras work.

The Q menu is a part of the overall camera settings, i.e. it is not separate from the camera settings. So the Q menu in each of your custom settings is (can be) different from the Q menu in the standard PASM mode settings. There is no way to copy a Q menu from one custom mode to another without all the other settings coming along with it.

So if you want the same Q menu in both the default PASM modes and in any or all of your custom modes, then you must either manually build them in each of your custom mode settings one-by-one or you can build the Q menu in your default PASM mode and then save it into all your custom modes, or build it in one of the custom modes and then save it into other custom modes. Having done that you will of course have overwritten anything else you've already setup, so you will have then rebuild those settings. And if you later decided to tweak a Q menu in one mode, you'll have to do it in all others!

I hope that makes sense!?

I also want my Q menu to be the same across all custom modes so I've posted an enhancement request about this to LUMIX. I just want the ability to copy the Q menu from one custom mode to another without overwriting other settings.

There is no way to copy a Q menu from one custom mode to another without all the other settings coming along with it.

That is a pitty...

or you can build the Q menu in PASM mode or in one of the custom modes and then save those settings into each custom mode. Having done that, you will then have to build your other custom settings on top.

I tried that, but it does not work. See my posting at the same time above.

Did you save after making the changes to the Q menu? Unlike the PASM modes, you must save any changes (i.e. over-write the existing settings) before switching out of the custom mode or the change will be lost.

Yes, if I have found that if I re-save the C2 or whatever, the Q menu changes persist for C2.

Go to Setup menu (spanner) -> Setting sub-menu (cog) -> select 'Save to Custom Mode' then select the custom slot you want to save into.

The camera will then ask if you want to overwrite the current camera settings to that location. Select Yes.

This allows you to save whatever the current settings are. So if you are in C1, make changes and then save to C1, you will have saved the changes.

So what I did was create my Q-menu in C1 and then saved it back into C1, then I saved it again into C2 and C3. After that, I modified the other specific settings I wanted in C2 and C3 so that I ended up with three different custom settings but all had the same Q menu.

C2 - tripod landscape
C3 - Astro
C4 - Action/Wildlife

Also, there is a setting that allows you to control how the C modes are loaded. Under "Custom Mode Settings" pick "how to reload custom mode." In particular, you can control whether or not the camera is initialized to the active C mode when it is switched on. "Turn the Power ON" in the menu. If this is OFF (the default) you can make override changes to the C mode that persist between power cycle, but when you switch to that C mode you get back your default settings as stored in the C mode. For example, C1 for me is landscape, which means aperture priority, ISO 80 & default aperture of F8. However, I can switch the aperture to F11, turn the camera off, and then turn if back on, and the aperture is still F11. If I want to go back to the defaults of C1, I can just quickly switch in & out of C1.

However, if "Turn the Power ON" is set to ON, then every time I turn the camera on (and the dial is set to C1) the camera starts in F8 & ISO 80. So it just depends on whether or not you want the camera to have the exact same settings (for a given C mode) whenever you turn the camera on.

Also worth noting (for those that don't know) is that custom button assignments are also stored in the C modes, and that you have a different set of C modes for stills, video, and S&Q.

This is the way I do it as well. Once you figure this out everything goes smoothly, assuming that you have done a bit of planning. The best approach is to start by thinking of all of the common changes you want to make and apply across all custom modes, including the Q menu and anything else you want to apply everywhere. Make all of those changes, and only then save that common set of changes to C1, C2, etc. You can then start customizing each C mode from that common base. So you start by creating a common base, and then customize from that common base.

While this works, it would better if you could make a change and then be given the option to save that change to all custom modes or to a subset of modes, chosen from a list. That would require less planning, and would save a lot of steps if you change you original plan.

That's a very important point. At first I found it frustrating that turning off the camera did not reset the camera to the C mode I had set on the dial. With the default you have to toggle the dial or it will use whatever settings you were using when you turned off the camera, just as George describes. This is not what I was used to from other camera systems. I later found that this behavior could be changed, but by then I had become used to the Lumix default and now do not want to go back. It's nice to have the option.

One small warning: the saving of your most recent settings does NOT work if you change the battery while the camera is off. Your most recent settings are saved in a volatile form of memory that gets cleared when the battery is removed. If you are not aware of this you can get burned if you simply assume that the camera will restart in the same state as when you turned it off. This also applies to the focal length you set for a manual lens you have mounted. Changing the battery will clear that setting, without any warning, so you need to reset it after changing the battery or your IBIS will not work as intended.

Thank you all for the tips. This helped a lot. I was able to configure my C1 & C2 settings and they were saved this time. I did some tests yesterday evening during a training- I thought it would work well, but after looking today at the images, I realized that the S1Rii did not accept the higher shutterspeed I needed in C1 and C2.

Usually, I use "M" and set SS to 1/1000 and F stop (depending on the lens with fullframe) to F5.6-F8. ISO automatic. But as soon as I actived C1 or C2, the camera decided the shutter speed, not me. I could not change it at all as long as I was in the C17C2 custom mode! Is this normal? What did I do wrong?

Due to this, all images were made between 1/160s and 1/500s and at fully opended aperture. The images got blurry 99% of the time and very often (due to human detection), one leg or the body is in focus, but not the face.

How can I use the C1/C2 custom modes, but still can adjust shutter speed and F stop to whatever I want in that second while beeing in C1/C2?

We might need you to list your custom settings to be sure but from what you are describing, it may be that you have a maximum ISO limit set?

If you set the shutter speed and aperture and set ISO to auto, then the ISO should fluctuate to whatever it needs depending on the brightness of the scene. However the camera also has a default ISO limit and when the camera reaches that limit for a scene, it will then over-ride your shutter speed and reduce it in order to get a correct exposure.

So check your upper ISO limit and consider increasing it so that the camera doesn't reduce your shutter speed. The easiest way to check this (provided you haven't customised the default dial operation) is to press the ISO button and then rotate the front dial. In the top-right of the LCD or EVF you should see the ISO limit change.

On the S5M2 for train photos, my C1 is set them auto ISO with an upper limit of 6400, a shutter speed of 1/800s and an aperture of f8. This gives enough headroom for the camera to push the ISO to whatever it needs and the shutter speed is never reduced.

Yes, you can do this. There is a little trick that you need to use. From what you describe your camera is set to use Aperture Priority mode "A" in your custom modes C1 and C2, but you want to use Manual Exposure mode "M" instead. Ordinarily you would change this with the PASM mode dial on the top of the camera, but if you do it that way you will no longer be in your custom mode! So instead you need to use the alternative method for choosing the PASM setting, which can be found buried in the menu.

Specifically, this is what you need to do:
(1) Set the camera to C1 (or some other C mode). Make sure you toggle the dial back and forth to be certain that it is reset to C1, and not using your recent settings (see discussion above).
(2) Hit the Menu button, go to the Cog icon on the left, and choose the first icon to the right which is for "Image Quality" (the pixelated icon). There are two pages of "Image Quality" settings. Scroll down to the second page, where you will find an item called "Exposure Control in P/A/S/M", and select that.
(3) Now that you have found the correct menu item, click on it and choose "Exposure Control (Photo Mode)". You can then choose M from the list. This will override the PASM dial.
(4) If you want C1 to always use M mode, simply save these new settings using the "Save to Custom Mode" menu. Then you won't have to go through this again. You can also add this menu item to your Q menu, which makes it easier to find should you want to pick some other PASM setting while in your custom mode.
(5) If you want to use AutoISO as the default, make sure to set the camera to AutoISO before using "Save to Custom Mode".

That's it!

Now, set your default SS, aperture, and ISO settings, and finally re-save to C1. C1 will now put your camera into M mode but will have all the other customization that were previously saved in C1.

Here's another little hint. If at any point you are wondering what mode you are in, there is an icon on the lower left of the viewfinder screen that displays this. For example, if you are in M mode while using the C1 settings, this icon will show a large M with a small C1 superimposed on top.

No, that was not the problem. I had ISO auto with the range of lowest ISO=80 and highest ISO=25600.

I guess this was the mistake. I did it now again with the way you described and it works now as expected.

Sometimes I think all these automations make more hassle and lead to more errors than the 40 year old style with "M". But it is fun to play, as long as you remember what you did

Strangely what is not possible with custom settings C1, C2 etc, is a predefinded card slot. I can only add in the Q.menu the option to switch between SD slot 1 and CFexpress 2, but I can not determine that in i.e. C1, it uses alwas card slot 1 and in C2 only the card slot 2.

Regarding naming the different custom settings: I named them all differently, so that I know where I copy what kind of setting to another custom function and when I switch from i.e. "M" to "C1" on the dial, it displays the name of the C1 custom funkction I gave earlier. That is convenient and avoids errors.

Wasn't cropzoom for primes, with a on-screen zoomslider? I might be wrong...

It works for zoom lenses as well. Manually zoom to a a desired starting focal length, then crop zoom from there.
