*** January 2025 Image and Video Thread ***

Friend of mine is getting married in May on the Lake Michigan shoreline of Michigan's upper peninsula; he asked me if I could make a video record to show the people who couldn't be there, nothing fancy. This is a test of the Sennheiser MKE 400 he sent me to use with my S5, to see if it would pick up voices over wind noise and look good enough for the family; it isn't any great shakes artistically and the narration sucks, but thought it might be helpful. (This is the first time I've used the S5 for video, and I was pretty impressed how well the C-AF worked with the 20-60.)

OMG Travis, the weather!!! It looks brutal!

The video and sound are great.
 
Every year the regional city of Parkes hosts a festival to celebrate Elvis Presley. I've never been (not really a fan to be honest) but a special train is put on to take visitors, so of course I went out today to get a photograph. This is the "Elvis Express" passing through Mount Victoria at the top of the Blue Mountains, about 126 kilometres west of Sydney.

Well, that was kinda the point. :)
If voices are audible in that weather, the mic ought to work anywhere, and it’d be helpful for people to see how it performed.

Inquiring minds want to know: Was the MIC'S low-frequency roll-off ("high pass") filter switch was enabled when you recorded this test? And/or the camera's "wind" filter menu item (if it has it)? And/or a foam/fur windshield on the outside of the mic? Thanks!

Love the Elvis train. We have fond memories of the Blue Mountains from our 2013 visit. Attached photo of nearby Katoomba's Three Sisters rock formation was snapped using my old GH3. Note the tourists on the walkway at the far left. :) Cheers!

The Low-Cut filter was off, no wind filter, the gain boost (+20 db) was on, and the furry hat was in place. :) (The mic was apparently supposed to have a foam shield in the box and come bundled with a furry hat, but the box had a second furry hat instead.)

Thanks for the follow-up. That explains the overly-loud low-frequency rumble in the test recording. Good you used the fur windscreen. In future, if there's any wind at all (even a slight breeze), I'd recommend turning on the mic's Low-Cut filter (in addition to using the fur windscreen.) And in a strong wind, like in your test video, I'd also use the camera's wind filter switch. Whatever works. Cheers!

My friend was actually happy with the sound, so improving it would be even better. :) ("Absolutely fantastic!!! The mic captured the sound wonderfully; was that with the foam mic cover, the fuzzy, or both? Was the mic reasonably easy to use? Dawn says that this combo should work perfectly for the wedding; thank you very much!")

Some images from the three wise men cavalcade in Segovia on the night of the 5th of January with the S5 and Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art. This is now the third time I've shot this event with this combo and it works well although the AF struggles sometimes with it being fairly dark, the performers moving around and their head-dresses and such causing challenges for the face detection.
