I bought a OG S1R

I'm using the original S5 for quite some time now. Since 2021 actually. But as the used prices for the OG S1R came down a lot, I spontaneously purchased the camera for a little above 800 €. However I'm not quite sure if I want to keep it or if I have done a mistake and should have saved for the new one or better should have opened for a S5II instead (would be about 200-400 € more).

Why I bought it:
Better all around hardware (EVF, Screen, Shutter, etc.).
And of course higher resolution.

My concerns:
Is the AF for people on par with the OG S5? Theoretically it uses the same algorithm, so it should be. But maybe I missed something.

What I forget to think about:
Cards! The S1R uses a XQD/CFxpress type B slot additionally to SD. Any recommendations about that? Can I use any CFxpress B card or only older ones?

Thanks for your input!

As you have the S5, and now the S1R"as well, you can test, and evaluate yourself.

Good question.
Officially the S1R do support the older type CFxpress version 2.0 type B
I never tried a faster CFxpress version 4.0 type B

But even in case you can use the faster version 4.0, it shall not actually affect the speed "in camera."
Because the underlying processor / system of the camera isn't even utilising the full speed of version 2.0 CFxpress type B cards.
Writing data to CFxpress B cards is not that much different from fast XQD SD-cards.
You shall not note many difference in e.g. clearing the buffer of the camera, when using high speed continues shooting.

At most you can have advantage by copying data to a "fast" PC or M2 NVMe memory, using a fast CFExpress card reader.
For further storage and processing of the images.

Me myself am using just "one" 256 GB CFxpress type B - of the brand "ProGrade" - I guess version 2.0 ?
(In those times the version is not specially noted).

There is an official list of Compatible models of CFexpress card for S1 / S1R

E.g. as a comparison, check what is written for the newer model S1R II

I have an S5 but would love to try an S1 as I'm a sucker for good, solid build quality.

All good reasons. The S1R is a quality camera that delivers superb images.

From my experience (I’ve had both) they perform the same.

I think a software upgrade added the ability to use CFExpress.

The software upgrade for S1R by adding an extra brand (e.g. Prograde) CFxpress cards - B
Is already by several years back:

And already included within the list of Compatible models of CFexpress card for S1 / S1R, mentioned a few messages back.

However it doesn't show any update by the new more fast CFxpress version 4.0 type B cards, if the S1R camera is compatible by that.
But I guess the faster version 4.0 specification, is backwards compatible to more slow version 2.0 specification.

At least when looking now to e.g. the compatibility list at Prograde itself,
it also show that these new version 4.0 type B cards are compatible to S1/S1R camera's.

If you still have your reservations, you always can try in a camera shop.

Thank you for your research. I already looked up how CFxpress improved and it turned out it's always backwards compatible, so 4.0 cards work also with 2.0 devices.

Thank you all for your input.

Next week, I will go on vacation and will take my S5 and the S1R with me. Than I will know what I want to keep. I probably keep just one of the two cameras.

I was thinking to pickup an S1R too eventually. I'm very interested in your journey!
