Hello All

Slight deviation regarding my original plan, I've opted for a S1 instead to test the waters in L mount. Hope CEX delivers a decent one (Grade B) later in the week for £595 :D. Have also bought the 20-60 and intend to get a M42 to L mount adapter to start me off. I came to the realisation that I might have to stick with m43 for my 'action' needs; but still wanted a FF camera for 'fun', and hopefully the S1 will deliver. The weight/size slightly concerns me but I use and enjoy a Canon 5D classic occasionally...The EVF was a big draw for MF as I struggle to MF in general but would like to do it more with my vintage lenses.
I recently bought a used S1 too. It's a very nice camera, and really good for MF use. And despite what some might try to tell you, its AF is pretty good too. I think it's a very under-rated camera actually.

So, one of my first images with the S1; had to give the Xpan crop a go.....

First thoughts; its not as heavy/big feeling as I was expecting, I'm not sure whether I'm going to keep this 'Grade B' version from CEX though as it has a mark/dirt splodge on the sensor, the grip is peeling, it has a shutter count of 70,000 and feels like it has been used a lot (I'll make sure I use the backup settings function though as it takes a long time to setup, still some tweaks to go; love having 'custom banks' back). Also, I occasionally get the error on the screen to turn off/on which is a bit disconcerting. But, I will definately look to replace it with another one in the future. Just need to test the 6k photo/burst mode for 'action' to see how well it holds up. No problems with focusing using SAF although I do find the EVF a little laggy when the light starts to drop. I have a MF adapter coming today hopefully so I can test it with some of my old M42 vintage lenses.

I love the old AEC Routemaster! Looks like another one behind it?

Great to hear the size is ok.

I agree you should probably return it for another. It sounds like it may have had a hard life. Hopefully you can find another in better condition.

Yes, there are 2 old buses stacked in this corner of my Dorset town :D. I'm just going to test the 6k mode/action aspects at weekend with my dog, test the human/face detection and also just checkthe useability of the S1 for MF lenses (or more critically in helping me to achieve critical focus). This will help me decide whether to just get another S1 in the future, whether to get an accompaying 'action' camera, probably the OM-1 or whether I could see the S5ii as an option. My concern on the S5ii is someone mentioned the camera wasn't as good as the S1 for use with vintage lenses; not sure why at this point other than a slight drop in EVF resolution.

A few points:

1) "B" grade. Return it. I got a pristine S1 from eBay for £600 with 7500 clicks on the shutter. There are couple of S1s at MPB at the moment for £650 ish that look excellent.

2) S5ii as an action camera. I think it's perfectly fine, but if you want reach, then obviously an OM-1 will give you more for same size/weight/price.

3) S5ii vs S1 for vintage lenses. I think the S5ii will be fine, and in some ways better - it has the ability to save lens's name in the EXIF which the S1 doesn't. Both cameras have the same MF aids like focus peeking and magnification. Sure, the S1 EVF is slightly bigger, but I don't think it will make that much difference.

Welcome to the forum and glad to see you enjoying your camera but it sounds like you need to take it back and get one that's been looked after a bit better.

Those buses look like a treasure trove of photographic opportunity, shame they don't have more space around them though. I'd be trying to find a way in there to photograph them better.

Tell me about it, they are in a private area which is gated so can only view from the pavement unfortunately. On the flip side, they do occasionally change positions (see below).

I've returned the S1 and at this stage I don't think I am going to get a replacement or jump to the S5ii. Whilst there were some aspects I liked about the S1, my results with this camera were not great even if the LCD/EVF previews before taking a shot were telling a different story.

Maybe the results were not great because of a faulty s1 and/or lens ? Sounds that returning it was always the right decision. But judging the L-Mount system on possibly a faulty camera might not be.

Those beautiful buses are time pieces and belong in a museum or something, they'll rot in that garden. I left a car one time for a year in a driveway near trees and foliage and the inside became a fungus festival and it was a running useable car, not vintage no leaks, no water ingress.

Maybe that was the case. I would definately give another Panasonic a go in the future as they seem to be really developing and updating their cameras at the moment but I don't want to rush into it at this stage.

Sherborne has got worse problems, there is a lovely old house (old school) just down the road, grade 2 listed, open to the elements in many of its windows and yet no one seems to be able to get anyone to do anything about it as the owner still lives there oddly. Also taken with the S1:

Don't get me wrong, I loved the Xpan feature on this camera and if the AF hit rate for things that move was as good as Olympus/Sony/Nikon/Canon then I would absolutely jump at the S5ii but I don't think it is there yet even with PDAF.

You being sarcastic or what?

Obviously higher end sports cameras costing 4x the price will be better for some sports or action but if you can't do things that move it will be your fault.

After the last and huge firmware update of the S5ii the AF performance is even better, near perfect.

I think that, to be fair, we should compare the performance of the PDAF with equivalent cameras from Nikon, Sony, OM, etc. in terms of category, price, etc. And I am pretty sure that the autofocus of the S5ii is not worse than the "out of focus" of the Nikon Zf (the Z6iii is not as good as the Z8/Z9), the OM1 or the Sony A7IV ;)

Thank you. What was wrong with the ZF? I’ve tried a Sony A9 and a Canon R8 but they both struggled with my moving subject (small dark fast dog). I have observed the LUMIX S5ii improvements but I’m not sure whether they are enough for my use. I’m also concerned at the mech burst speed and the rolling shutter when using the electric shutter.

The "out of focus" idea was a joke :) and nothing is wrong with the Zf, in fact is the camera that maye one day I will trade for my Nikon Df... what I mean is that the autofocus of the midrange cameras from other brands is not better that the AF of the S5ii, even for photo. And I know people who use Nikon mirrorless cameras and they say that there is a difference between the flagship Z8 and Z9 and the others.
