DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Review

I recently got my hands on one of these little cameras, and I have to say, they are fantastic! The hype is well deserved. If you don't know, it's basically a little 1" sensor camera on its own gimbal. If you're looking for something truly compact to shoot family stuff or document your life, this is a hard to beat proposition. It's so easy, I can literally just hand it to my wife and she's got me framed and recoding in 5 seconds whereas with my s5ii she does a frustrated sigh if I ask her to do anything with it because it's an intimidating array of controls and settings and this big expensive hunk of glass and metal. Even my dad who I showed it to thought it was so cool that he wanted one and I don't recall him ever using a camera much growing up.

Since it's on its own gimbal, it does pretty neat stuff like track faces even as you move out of frame, lets you flip between outward facing and selfie facing with a shortcut. The footage out of it is quite good - somewhere between the best iphone and a modern mirrorless (maybe as good as your latest action cams?) - but definitely good enough for any non-pro purposes and even good enough for some small budget professional situations or someone who's a full-time content creator.

I got one and took it on a family trip to the zoo and what was awesome about it is it fit in my compact cross-body bag and could easily come out, flip the screen, and im recording my kid feeding a giraffe, then flip it back off and throw it in my bag again nigh single handedly and so quickly that I'm not missing any shots. I opted to leave my s5ii at home since I knew I'd be handling our two small kids (and backpack full of their food, waters, diapers, etc.) and hanging out with another family with small kids so wanted to be unencumbered. Yeah, I didn't get any nice telephoto shots of animals but I got enough footage to cut together a fun family movie that we'll have for years and the best part is I'm actually in it for once because my wife doesn't mind using this camera!

I bought the camera in the creator combo too which comes with some handy doodads like a battery grip and the dji mic2 transmitter which just effortlessly and automatically syncs to the camera or you can use it standalone or buy the receiver later and use it to pipe audio into your s5ii directly (which I might do if I like it enough). This little mic has a 3.5 input and 32bit float ability which makes this combo really really nice if you're wanting to put out content and have stuff that just works right out of the box without too much learning curve but also gives you the ability to grow and use something like a pro lav mic with it and pair it with your full frame set up (then the pocket 3 would be free to shoot BTS or another angle) or even buy the receiver and extra transmitter kit to have something like an interview mic setup.

Just wanted to drop this recommendation for you guys if you ever want to film yourself or want something small for family outings or travel. This thing will fit in your pocket quite literally or take up about as much space in your bag as your bulb blower. They're growing scarce in the states now - long story, I got mine open box from best buy and didn't love that it had been activated/account bound already to the first buyer. DJI customer service assured me that it wouldn't be a big deal if I had the receipt, but I returned it anyways and went to go order a new one only to find they're sold out and with tariffs being what they are - I didn't want to risk the price going up again so I just ordered another open box "new" one off ebay that will arrive in a couple days (and I'm already missing it).

If you're curious about this camera and have any questions, I'd be happy to answer. So far, I think this is a really fun little gadget that's well worth it if you're wanting something that's a step up from your phone that is easy and fun for capturing video on the go.

Thanks Nate, I've been thinking about getting one of these!

Quite a few landscape photographers that I follow on YouTube use an Osmo to create video content for their channel as it's so much easier to carry and hold, and they also often use the chest mount/strap while hiking.

I have an earlier version, and agree they are great for family videos. I checked and the Pocket 3 is in stock and available from Amazon in the US.

Since I do mostly HDR video I don't do much video on 1" sensor cameras like this because of their low dynamic range, but I use it now and then for quick easy video. I also have the DJI mic and receiver (1, not 2) and use this on my "big" cameras all the time.

Definitely, though the biggest downside in my opinion is the lack of weather sealing, so if you're doing a lot in the rain or snow I'd definitely consider an action cam. For good weather and light though, it's so easy and user friendly to just plop it down and you can aim it from your phone or even set it up to track your face and keep it in the rule of thirds automatically. Or if I have something in mind I want to do, I really can just treat my wife or a friend like a tripod and have them just hold it while I control everything from the app.

I took a look and I was seeing listings for the creator combo going for $1100 (they add some cheap accessories to get around some pricing rules).

The "capture more' kit which lacks the mic2 transmitter ($100 value) is selling for more than the creator combo was going for a couple months ago.

The device only is showing longer ship times than usual for Amazon, when I had looked earlier this week, they were estimating getting more in on the 25th and best buy told me the same thing.

Scary time to be a photo/video enthusiast (and worse to be a pro and not know if your next work tool will cost double).

I have no experience with HDR content but my new tablet I think supports it (galaxy tab s9 plus). I'll have to check it out

Yes, I like DJI gear and hope the prices stay within reach. Also, there is constant talk about the US government banning DJI drones for national security reasons, although recent legislation about this has been dropped.

The Pocket 3 can have 10 bit Log video, so HDR is possible.
